This project is dying, I haven't heard from it in ages

This project is dying because you haven't seen updates? False logic. The project isn't dying, and you haven't seen any updates. Nor will you, for a bit yet.

Personally, I don't really care about this project because it's something the rest of us will never get to see. I'm much more interested in the X0 project because it will actually be released.

I agree; humbug on this project.

I second that humbug. Bought one of those fekkin "Han shoots first" shirts and it still hasn't come. Glad I didn't use my money.

I hope to see updates, in due time, even if I never see the finished product.

And I think those who don't care about this project probably shouldn't be posting in this thread.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Going very well.. there's a huge section of the film - all the Death Star stuff, basically - where the color base is anybody's guess. It's sometimes greenish, sometimes bluish, and trying to balance that all out to one unified palette has been challenging. What color IS Tarkin's uniform, anyway? Jumps around pretty heavily. Each scene can be balanced unto itself, but sometimes the way I balance it makes it tricky to adjust to a master coloring, which is largely unknown. Do you know how many shades of greenish-white, bluish-white and pinkish-white stormtrooper armor is? I do. But as I close in on the final, the predominant and most likely coloring becomes clearer. Updates to the site regarding this process would basically be maddening, as I'd have to revise the entire section about every other day. So instead, when I've got it all nailed down, I'll present a truncated version of the process taken to get there, minus months of missteps and re-thinks. Large sections are nice and tight, though; tighter than on any previous release version ever. It's nice to see.. or maybe I should say, it's nice not to see...

I can't figure out this PM system. But I still have my paypal reciept here dated July 1, 2005. I paid for it with my brother's debit card. Nothing illegal her, he just let me use it to spend on my birthday gift (he's lazy). Here, I'll just paste everything except my full name and address.

Dear Richard (last name),

This email confirms.... etc (deleted Oct 16 2005)

It still hasn't arrived and I've been debating whether to contact you or just wait some more. Here's my email: Wesyeed@gmail.com Any info/help/assistance/whatever would be appreciated.

So do the Rebel troops uniforms at the start of the film.

So information *is* freely traded, and there is enough info around for any of us to incorporate (or not) into our own projects. I'm glad Mike continues to share his findings, and that is why we share ours, as between the OT community it adds to the information available for us all to utilise.
^^^^ What he said.

Mike's site is not only a valuable reference for the defects present on the DVD release, it also contains some very well-written editorial.

Mike, I was looking over your site today hoping for an update. Alas...

I'm wondering, is there any way you can have some bigger screenshots on your site? I know you've said that your website stands as a guide for others to follow in your footsteps. That might be a bit easier with bigger screenshots.

Thanks!

why no release of the legacy edit? and when did the xo people change there tune they say on their website as well that they were never going to release it to people, or is this just a legal disclaimer.

It is not very smart to start a website about an oOT project and announce when and where it will be available.

You might want to read further back in this thread to find Mike's intentions. It's been addressed many times in the past.

..what the...? Er, okay, anyhoo, empty post aside.

Mike, any words of wisdom (or, hey a release of the plugin you wrote ) on your technique for repainting the laser glows in the opening shot? I've tried a number of methods, from a 3D solution via a Maya shader (totally unsatisfying, but maybe a custom Mental Ray camera shader....dunno), to a series of gausian blurs applied frame by frame in PS, but nothing is quite right, The PS solution came closest to the right look, but looses the taper of the bolt and glow once you make the blur the appropriate size. Any specifics you can share?
Author
Time
I did it by roto-ing the original bolts themselves with a mask in After Effects, duplicated, and blurred the masks in 2 or 3 varying radius layers. This way the original shape is preserved, and you have explicit control over the core/glow percentage. There was no workable template; each bolt needed basically a different setting for each frame. Like everything else in Legacy Edition, it's 99% roto. But you can't beat the quality.

Best,

_Mike

Yep... I was about 70-75% complete when I got a couple of seriously kick-ass tools written for me to allow for more precise spot-color adjustments without chroma noise gain and a few other things, so I went back. Someday I may actually update my freakin' site.
