Thanks for the support! I hope to bring in new viewers for TBB who were initially put off by some of the storytelling decisions. I think there is a good story buried somewhere in this animation!

Looking forward to this Acbagel!

I watched through Bad Batch and enjoyed its underlying story but it’s overall reliance on repeating the same story arch with accepting Omega’s role in their squad was tiresome and unfortunately most of the episodes felt like filler!

I’m sure you’ll be able to make something quite compelling with what’s there!

This project sounds really interesting, and I’m looking forward to seeing your edit! I have only watched the first season of The Bad Batch once, but had little interest in watching it again due to the repetitive parts you mentioned earlier (“No, it’s too dangerous”. “Please, Hunta.” “Fine.”), as well as the silly stuff with Omega, where the show becomes a Disney children’s program.

I had wondered about the inclusion of the footage from TCW in an edit of TBB; it doesn’t seem that it would work very well though, once you remove the content with the Jedi.

I definitely felt the same way! I do know there is a worthwhile story to be constructed out of what they created, it’s just a matter of analysing where that lies and transforming it into a touching experience. I am up for the challenge and always love to hear ideas if you have any.

Indeed, and as my title of the project is “A More Mature Edit” I certainly aim to reduce any and all feeling of that jarring kids-oriented presentation.

You are correct, the Jedi-less TCW content is truly quite dull and I don’t see any way around that. I know Tales of the Jedi is coming out soon but I highly doubt that will influence this project at all either, considering the name haha…

I am very thankful that TBB S2 got pushed back until January as that actually gives me hope on finishing this before then! Hoping to start this in a couple weeks as I finish up my Mando project now.

Hello there, this project looks intriguing, especially since this show is rather dull and repetitive upon rewatch due to the issues discussed above.
How far along are you in the editing process? I very much look forward to t.

Thanks! I’m still only in the first couple hours of material. I finished ~50% of the first film, but then went back to edit TCW Bad Batch episodes first which I’m about 50% through as well. I started dabbling in this a few days ago, but looks like I’m gonna put in another couple weeks on Mandalorian first before coming back to this. Hoping to still have this ready to watch before The Bad Batch Season 2 in January though.

Hello, and an even later Merry Christmas to you. Progress has been slow the last few months, unfortunately. Moving to a new place (finally bought a house!) and it’s been a time sink of incredible proportions. Obviously, I missed my intended goal to get this done before the Season 2 debut! However, I am back into editing this right now and hope to complete this project as soon as I can.

I’m still grinding out this “Episode 0” of TCW content. As I’ve mentioned before, I think that arc is a rather dull storyline in general, but I do feel it’s necessary to frame these characters in a new way right from the get-go. I’ll post some editing notes tomorrow.

I now have the “Episode 0” Bad Batch origin story completed and available for viewing. Let me know if you want to watch it.

Main edits:

  • This is not meant to fit into the larger mythos of The Clone Wars show, even though it is technically content from Season 7 of TCW. This is meant to function as a prequel storyline to The Bad Batch show to learn how Echo joins them and give a brief glimpse into their missions during the Clone Wars in-universe.

  • The main focus here was on telling a Bad Batch focused storyline instead of the long-form 4-episode TCW arc with all of those main characters. We now only get a few character easter egg appearances of Mace, Anakin, and Obi-Wan, and the larger narrative of the Battle of Anaxes has been removed. This is a 50-minute focused narrative on the Bad Batch acquiring Echo. If I were to edit TCW arc as its own show now, I would probably create a storyline solely about the Battle of Anaxes based on what I removed from this TBB edit.

  • Aside from keeping all scenes focused on TBB, I have also made edits to the squad consistent with the altering of my previous posts about edits to the characters in my in-progress “Episode 1”. This includes the less over-the-top stereotypes in trimming down Wrecker and Tech, reducing some childish humor, and quickening action scenes for less goofiness all around.

I didn’t find this TCW arc about TBB to be very interesting aside from the Battle of Anaxes and the character development for Anakin… So I’m saying here that I’ve removed all of my favorite content, haha. But really, this now works much better as an intro to TBB instead of a disjointed introduction to the squad during an otherwise very intense and entertaining time of TCW episodes. I think this would’ve played out better if TCW had made a 4 episode arc about the Battle of Anaxes focused on the Jedi, and then introduced this content as the first episode of TBB Season 1 later on.

I’m planning to finish my TBB Episode 1 later next week.

I watched your episode zero (taken from the Clone Wars series’ Bad Batch arc) and it’s all you could hope for. The original content isn’t particularly strong, but you’ve cut it exactly right, trimming the fat and keeping the focus on the Bad Batch characters. It worked as an example Bad Batch mission (introducing them all through the lens of Rex, and with Echo as the emotional core), and I was glad you completely removed the final episode for pacing and focus, using only its ending.

It works far better as an episode of the Bad Batch than it did as a Clone Wars episode, so I was glad you cut the Anakin/Padmé content (especially since I still used just those scenes in my TCW:Refocused edit elsewhere), and the Anakin/Mace content (which wasn’t very additive, except for the scene of Anakin killing Trench, which I also would have cut from this or TCW:R anyway as it’s too similar to other things we’ve seen in TCW, and Trench doesn’t need to be a major villain.

I have only three minor ideas you might want to consider:

  1. Opening with a subtitle saying “Shortly before the end of the Clone Wars” or similar, to just clarify when this is set if you’re picking the show up after TCW/ROTS (which I reckon anyone should).
  2. Since I’m a big fan of skipping the Citadel arc (as it’s just not very strong, despite Tarkin’s appearance and Echo’s death), and it’d be a while since the viewer had watched that anyway if they were watching in chronological order, I would look for an opportunity to include Echo’s death as a very brief flashback - perhaps during the scene you cut with Rex pondering over a helmet. I’m mainly asking this because it’d help me personally - some do want Citadel included in TCW:R, just for that scene alone, but it’s so throwaway - but it could add value to this episode since this is the first point in the overarching story when it becomes relevant, and you do have a good scene to embed it in.
  3. This is a bit of a longer shot, but you could end this episode on TBB#1’s opening, the newsreel (perhaps without the newscaster’s narration), to effectively bring us up out of this episode’s extended flashback and back up to speed. That’d get that out of the way, allowing TBB#1 to begin on the actual drama, not an extended intro.

Where did you place the Anakin/Padme scene in your series? I love that scene and when I cut it, I knew it needed a home elsewhere in TCW. It was just so irrelevant to TBB.

And I agree about Trench. I really like when Anakin kills him, but like you said, it doesn’t necessarily add anything new and Trench’s return was a bit too random and sudden in general.

I have only three minor ideas you might want to consider:

I absolutely love all 3 of those suggestions. Great ways to spice up the mildly bland content. I will get to implementing all of that right now. Thanks for the write up, I think those ideas are just what this Episode 0 needs to feel like a proper prequel to TBB show.

To everyone else who asked to see, I will send it out as soon as I complete the above additions.

Love this. I added the Anakin/Padmé scene to the first of my Siege of Mandalore episodes, so it kicks off that storyline. The scene ends with Anakin going off to battle - which in this context is instead the opening battle of that arc, so a simple wipe carries us through.

As promised, I’m now watching through TBB, so I can put together thoughts for you from an editing perspective.

I’ve just started with the final three episodes of season one, and the first three of season two, to remind myself where season one ends up going as I commence my rewatch.

Thoughts:

  • In terms of the key plotline, season one’s focus is primarily on the transition from Republic to Empire. There’s a lot of content on that theme, all of which is fine, but much of which in isolation isn’t too vital. But, the main throughline of Kaminoan-Imperial politics, internal Kaminoan politics, clones being phased out/replaced by stormtroopers, Tarkin, and Rampart, is very good, and I think represents the spine of the season worth keeping as much of as possible.
  • In terms of the character plots, obviously the Batch themselves are key, in particular their relationship with Crosshair.
  • Thankfully, both Crosshair and the Imperial/Kaminoan plots are largely unconnected from our Batch stories, so a lot of those scenes from otherwise unused episodes can be used pretty freely.
  • For the Batch, they do need to have distinct and strong personalities, so I would preserve as much of the episodes which demonstrate their individuality and character as much as possible, but that doesn’t need to emerge from their more stereotypical behaviours, especially when used for humour. But I’d be mindful to keep their character in focus.
  • Omega is a little tricky. She’s not awful, but she’s been fairly criticised as sometimes dangerously overestimating her abilities and taking risks, as well as a little too childlike for even a young clone. She is a good character and ultimately the heart of the show, but I think we can afford to give her the Grogu treatment - allowing her to stay a little more in the background, with character development shown a little more slowly. That said, people have also noted that a lot of the time she’s left behind, later causing problems, or taken along, later causing problems. I think some of that could be solved by dialogue trims - specifically having her be less argumentative when ordered to stay behind. It might strengthen her character if she’s a little more military/obedient, as if she recognises that certain missions are beyond her capabilities. I’d imagine most of the young male Jango clones would have behaved the same during their early training. I’d still preserve all of her key moments and more valuable dialogue with the other clones about who she is - but perhaps have her a little more comfortably junior given her level of experience. I’d also have her be a bit less anxious/worried/impatient in some scenes, for the same reasons.
  • Cid needs to be established but doesn’t have much development, so doesn’t need to be in huge focus.
  • I’d seek to preserve anything that ties back to or develops other key locations or characters - Rex, Cody, AZI, Ryloth, Cad Bane, etc.
  • The other thing I noticed even in these six key episodes I watched, was that the show is very action heavy, even more so than Clone Wars, and, as much as I hate the word, it feels like some of their missions do contain a good amount of “padding” especially when they’re travelling from A to B within a mission. Sometimes I think whole sequences could be trimmed, removing a few steps from their plans/journeys, to get us to the meat a little more swiftly.

Finally, on those episodes I watched, I think all six were pretty vital (obviously, since they’re finales/premieres). The Gregor episode features Gregor (from TCW and Rebels) but also gets Hunter captured, transitioning neatly into the two-part finale. The very final episode of season one could probably do with some condensing, with a bit less travel and some combining of the scenes where the Batch and Crosshairs talk. As for the three episodes which opened season two, they were all pretty decent. The third episode could probably be woven nicely into the other two, since it’s a Crosshair/Cody story without the Batch, having Rampart’s execution of the clone on Serenno coming before his second scene where he shows doubt in Crosshair - doubt he doesn’t show in their first scene together.

Anyway, now I’ll go rewatch the earlier episodes with all this in mind!
