Did you think Dagobah was Yoda’s homeworld the prequels were made?

Author
Time

I assume the title should say ‘before the prequels were made’, and if so, then yes, I did. An amphibious creature seems at home in a marsh. That is not to say that he never left Dagobah, but I still can’t see a nature-loving person like Yoda feeling at home on Coruscant or in charge of the entire Jedi Order.

Neither Vader nor the Emperor seem to even suspect that Yoda had a hand in training Luke, so it feels very much like Yoda was solidly in retirement for hundreds of years before the events of the prequels, and his training Obi-wan was probably a quiet, spiritual affair much like Luke being drawn to Dagobah in the OT. I imagine a lot of the Jedi Masters, which were solely teachers before the prequel retcons, lived quiet secluded lives on worlds of their choosing, living in harmony with their creatures and people and in that way keeping the peace across the galaxy. Jedi Knights on the other hand were specifically warriors who used their Force abilities to serve the Old Republic, and as such would have to find training from other Knights or from Masters whom they could convince to train such dangerous, headstrong youth.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Pretty much this. Didn’t give it too much thought, honestly.

“The Anarchists are right in everything; in the negation of the existing order and in the assertion that, without Authority there could not be worse violence than that of Authority under existing conditions. They are mistaken only in thinking that anarchy can be instituted by a violent revolution… There can be only one permanent revolution — a moral one: the regeneration of the inner man. How is this revolution to take place? Nobody knows how it will take place in humanity, but every man feels it clearly in himself. And yet in our world everybody thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself.”

In the ROTJ novel, and then probably in earlier drafts as well, Palpatine finds out that Yoda trained Luke. It doesn’t matter in the film so luckily it’s cut, but based on that they knew him.

I don’t remember Yoda being amphibious.

I didn’t think Dagobah was his homeworld, nor did I think he would be living on Coruscant either. But it was clear that he used to be somewhere else training Jedi for 800 years, not in a swamp. For me it always looked like he was just hiding in “a strange place to find a Jedi master”.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

I remember reading somewhere as a kid , I think it was the ESB storybook , that Dagobah did not appear on any star charts or maps and that the Force guided Luke there . Based on Luke saying something was familiar about the place in the movie , I assumed we would see him taken there for a brief time as a baby in the prequels ,but still thought Yoda just went into exile there like Kenobi did on Tatooine ,and that they both never always lived in those places . I do remember though ,that there was a piece of art that was published in the early to mid 90s ,that depicted a young Yoda being trained by a serpent like alien on Dagobah . This was before the prequels were being made ,so apparently ,there were some who thought what the op mused about .

I think I did believe that Dagobah was Yoda’s homeworld, though couldn’t explain why I thought that. Other than the basics like his house being there, it looking so old and that it seemed to me that Yoda had been there for decades, or he he was so at ease, relaxed and at peace there.

Like screams in the void above, I did think we’d see Luke travel through there as a baby or young child in the Prequels, in reference to his line in Empire.

I’d love to see that art of the serpent creature training Yoda!

The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

I kind of dig the design.

I just looked into it a bit more and I find it so funny that the EU kept trying to insist the guy was not training Yoda on Dagobah. One retcon tried to claim it was just another swamp planet.

Move along, move along.

To be fair, we still don’t know that it isn’t his home planet. Where did Yaddle and Grogu come from? Their people don’t even have a name! If ever there was a species whose home world would be entirely unknown to the Republic, it’s them.

The only downside to this theory is the dearth of anyone else on Dagobah. Is Grogu the last of his kind? Did some kind of catastrophe wipe out everyone on the planet sometime before ROTS? (echoes of the old “Naboo will become Dagobah” theory from the early 2000s). On the other hand, how and why did Yoda come to know of Dagobah?

I guess it can’t be entirely unknown, since Luke was able to get there after a ghost told him the name of the system (and nothing else).

Thanks for that, that is very cool and fires the imagination. I’ve really got to start reading up on the books, comics and old fan content released before Phantom Menace and Prequel era.

Yeah, and for what? ‘Cause Lucas really didn’t want Yoda to have been to Dagobah prior to the events of ROTS. Nevermind that the film never states as such; Lucas’ authorial intent is sacrosanct (except when it comes to the existence of Sith post-ROTJ. lawl)

Maybe neither Snake-Man nor Yoda are indigenous to Dagobah, but the abundant life there makes it closer to the Force so it’s a cool place for Force users to hang out. What’s this Snake-Man image from? There is that one trading card that showed Yoda “on his home planet” from mid-90s, recalled/withdrawn supposedly at the behest of Mr Lucas himself. (I read about this in Star Wars Galaxy magazine.)

Also sorry but not sorry just have to Ps. All the 90s trading card sets were bitchin and should be collected as books

I remember drawing an alien for this contest! Unfortunately I was not a very good artist and never sent it in for one reason or another (embarrassment.) Maybe one day I’ll find it in an old box in the basement somewhere. So much cool stuff came from SW Galaxy magazine. Unfortunately my copies are old and mangled from wear, cutting out posters etc. Maybe I’ll try to acquire better copies somewhere. I wonder how collectible they are. Ok that’s enough off-topic for now.

I figured Yoda was hiding on Dagobah with the darkside cave to mask his presence. I never once gave it thought about it being his world of origin.

But then again i never wondered who built Threepio either. Or how Boba was as a kid etc.
