Making the Obi-Wan & Anakin training session (From the Kenobi series) work in an AOTC edit. — Page 3

On a narrative perspective, we would indeed see Padmé “losing” vs Palpatine along with Anakin “losing” vs Obi-Wan. On a technical perspective, the video quality is so different it might feel jarring, unless someone remaastered the deleted scene in higher quality.

So long 🙌

Remembered this thread and decided to have a go at adding fitting score to the scene (taken mostly from Episode II).

The sound effects are unfinished, the biggest thing I need to do (other than stabilizing some of the handheld shots) is extend the final shot so that a wipe can work. I’m mostly happy with how the music sounds, but some of the transitions could use some tweaking I think. Plus Anakin’s theme at the beginning could be replaced with more ‘scene transition-y’ music.

Just to be explicit for the purposes of generating some thought, here’re some of the things that scene communicates:

  • They have a fun teasing relationship but Anakin still defers to Obi-Wan’s teaching and wisdom
  • Anakin is aggressive and focused on martial victory, and usually wins their duels
  • Obi-Wan thinks Anakin’s too aggressive and blinded by a need for victory and to prove himself - he’ll remain a Padawan until he’s past this
  • Anakin needs reminding by Obi-Wan that Jedi are defenders
  • Obi-Wan’s patient, and resourceful even when apparently losing

Scenes from AOTC which could be relevant to those threads:

  • Anakin’s eager to protect Padmé - could be read as needing to prove himself
  • Anakin rushes after Zam Wesell when Obi-Wan pursues a smarter approach
  • Anakin murders the Tuskens - “Mercy doesn’t defeat the enemy, master”
  • Anakin vows to Padmé that he’ll find a way to prevent the deaths of those he loves
  • Anakin’s captured by Dooku during his attempted rescue of Obi-Wan
  • Geonosis fight
  • Anakin rushes into the Dooku fight and is defeated

All of this. Plus it makes it seem like Obi-Wan and Anakin are actually friends and makes Anakin out to actually be a likable guy.

Wow, I think this score works pretty well. Hopefully it sparks more interest in this idea.

I personally like Anakin’s theme at the beginning because I think it serves as a bridge to the previous movie and telegraphs to the audience that this young man is the same boy we met in that movie. I just wish Palpatine said something like “Master Kenobi and his padawan”, since it would transition us nicely into the next shot.

This is fantastic. I agree Anakin’s theme could be changed but it fits right in and makes for a much better intro for these two. Once you have a final version I will definitely be splicing this into Hal’s edit for my collection.

Honestly something like this is all Episode 2 needs to sell Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship. Heck, I think including this enables the use of him complaining to Padme in her apartment and maybe even his mental breakdown after the Tuskens. “He’s holding me back!” and all that.

Are there any official fanedits that have incorporated this training scene into AOTC? Snooker’s concept video is amazing and I was thinking it might already be perfect enough to slot into my own personal edit.

What do you consider as official? The only one I am aware of that uses it is the “Bebert Cut” that can be found on Reddit. I mostly liked it, particularly the musical score, but I was not impressed with the de-aging in my opinion. There was also a botched transition towards the end of the flashback that gets cut when Anakin charges at Obi Wan.

The Snooker version is visually superior to what I saw in the edit and complete. However, I would prefer a different musical score. It felt a bit out of place for me, and some of the dialogue was hard for my ears to pick up as it was swallowed by the music.

True. The dialogue is a bit low in the mix. If that could just be raised in volume a tad bit, I think the snooker clip could most likely be put into an edit seamlessly. Now I just need to figure out how to raise the dialogue volume in that clip, unless snooker is interested in raising those levels and exporting the clip again.

Here is a folder containing the video with only the dialogue, an incomplete stereo sfx track, and the stereo score track. Place all three into your video editor and you can mess with the levels to your desire. My video editing software can only output stereo audio so I’m sorry if more work is created than necessary on your end.

(Note: I only ever did the swinging sound effects for Anakins saber, so you may want to add more sfx for Obi-Wans)

Using Snooker’s amazing work as a base, I have finished incorporating this training sequence into my own personal edit of AotC. One piece of added saber sfx, a borrowed establishing shot of the Jedi Temple from TPM (considering I don’t watch the film in any of my star Wars marathons hence machete order) were used.

I decided to place the added scene between Padme addressing the Senate and the meeting between the Jedi and Palpatine in his office. I believe it is 100 percent necessary to give one scene of breather time in between the training scene and elevator scene due to the visual differences in how Ewan and Hayden look.

I am pretty satisfied with the execution of the transitions and assimilation of the footage into Attack of the Clones, but am still wary that the de-aged Anakin and older Obi-Wan are too noticeably different from their younger counterparts.

Please do weigh in!

The music transition at the end isn’t 100% smooth, but everything else is absolutely perfect! I’d love to use it in an extended edit myself, the de-age stuff doesn’t worry me too much.

That’s a slick attempt! I agree that the music at the end of the scene should continue to cover the intro to Palpatine’s office, or the music should be deleted in that transition completely.

Also, this isn’t a critique with your work but with the scene itself, but the sparring scene feels weird and has since the beginning. The biggest problem for me is the strange cut near the end when Obi-wan leaps into action again. It feels like there’s a missing shot, and I assume this was a cut point in the original scene but there’s definitely a loss of continuity here. The lines ‘Your weapon’s gone…it’s over.’ followed by ‘Your need for victory, Anakin, it blinds you’ feel superfluous to the flow before and after. Obi-wan’s next line ‘You’re a great warrior, Anakin…’ feels like the proper end to the action, and it may be best to just delete the second false ending altogether. I’d suggest cutting from Obi-wan being disarmed straight to the wideshot of Obi-wan spinning out of his crouch to put an end to the fight.

As to my thoughts on overall placement of the scene, I’m still unconvinced that it wouldn’t work better after Palpatine’s office. That just seems like the most natural place in terms of the exposition and flow of Star Wars movies, and I’m not too bothered by the differences in character appearance. Any AOTC edit which uses upscaled deleted scenes is going to be at least a little suboptimal, visually speaking.

My ideal placement is still Senate - Palpatine’s Office - Sparring - Padme’s Apartment (sans elevator).

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I agree with this entirely.

Great job.
Regarding the actors change in appearance, I feel like Anakin’s face is a bit wider and his shoulders are too. It makes him look older, more like in ROTS. Maybe you could mitigate the effect by slightly distorting the image.

Also agree.

PixelJoker95 hinted that he would do something about the sparring scene in his edit, regarding the de-aging VFX. Maybe he can deliver a better result in making the actors look more similar to theirs AOTC versions with his own approach.

Speaking of looking more similar, the above edits are excellent but their picture quality is superior to AOTC. What settings would capture the same weirdly lit, slightly fuzzy look?

Maybe add in some more film grain? The lighting on this was already changed I believe.

I think to get this looking like AOTC, there needs to be some sort of digital blurring effect, grain won’t help really. It’s gotta be like, a smoothing? I’m sure we can figure it out.

Agreed. I’m thinking of decreasing sharpness as a start

You might want to edit out Anakin’s right shoulder, as it freezes in place otherwise. Having the wipe come in from the right would work, but it might be visually confusing. In regards to audio, this is definitely an improvement.
