I haven’t heard any actors involved say anything of that nature, I guess we’ll have to wait few years for a reveal all memoire or book to really know what happened behind the curtains.

Even Lord & Miller’s remaining scenes kinda show the much sillier tone (Han speaking Shyriiwook, etc.)

Do we really know that though?

Yes. We know which scenes were filmed when. That particular scene has been much discussed as the primary example of what’s left from Lord & Miller and the tone they wanted for the film.

I followed these stories avidly for the years of production and when after release, my current job has also given me some insights to what happened. It’s fairly well-documented, with having to read between polite remarks that everyone made. It was a fairly friendly parting of ways, but rather stressful prior to that.

Hmm that could be the case but I’m not entirely convinced, if it’s not too much trouble could you sight any sources for the Chewie brwl being part of Lord and Miller’s cut? I remember hearing an interview with Jonathan Kasdan where he talks about writing that scene.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: TFA isn’t a ripoff of ANH. I still don’t see how they are the same movie, beyond some surface-level similarities that were obviously intended by the filmmakers.

Other than that, I agree with JakeRyan. It seems like Lord and Miller were trying to go with their signature “tongue-in-cheek” comedic style. That sort of style works for animated movies like the LEGO movie and Spider-Verse, but not so much for a movie about a young man’s loss of innocence. Nothing against them, but I’m glad they were replaced.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:

The Kasdans were writers on the film, and were not allowed to direct. Howard was the other director who shot 80% of the film, the other 20% is from Lord & Miller’s original version of the film.

Also, Lord & Miller are more prolific producers than they are writers. Some of fans’ favourites of their work they did not direct (such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). It’s important to separate what they directed from what they didn’t, especially when talking about what their direction would have looked like.

Thanks for the link Jake, I stand corrected!

Of course! I like what this film was trying to be, and I wish that they’d have hired a better director than Howard that could have worked with Lord & Miller (who could have stayed on as producers) and the Kasdans to make a more compelling film that didn’t lampoon what people love about Star Wars while still adding fun into the mix.

My biggest hope is that we get a Q’ira & Maul series on Disney+

All that said, I really love the way this Bebop edit is coming along. I wish I had audio as isolated for Solo as I do for some of the other films to help take it the extra mile.

Yeah, I wasn’t really thinking about any of that when working on this to be honest. The movie is what it is, and pretty much everything about this edit is coming from a different place creatively than “righting its wrongs.” (Which makes it a lot of fun to work on!)

That said, Maul probably won’t be in this edit for reasons along those lines. If there’s one thing I think they “should have” done, it’s make Qira’s decision to leave Han entirely her own. Of course Han may think she up and abandoned him, but we know she was trying to protect him. I think it would’ve been really interesting and heartbreaking if Qira ultimately decided she wanted Dryden’s throne more than she wanted to be with Han, and that’s why she leaves. It’d really hammer in how much she’s changed and moved on, and I feel even has roots in her yearning for more back on Corellia.

I think that fits the melancholy of Coaxium Bebop really nicely, and even mirrors the themes of Spike Spiegel’s own stunted emotionality from the original show. Han living in the past, falls into cynicism as a defense mechanism for all his hurt, and that follows him even into his backslide around TFA times.

Ideally, I’d like this to be almost a critique of Han’s character.

I like that for the tone of this, a lot. That really puts her more in a femme fatale role.

I like the reveal of Maul in the original film because it better fits with the overall story and chronology of Star Wars. Since this feels like a separate artistic expression, that doesn’t matter.

On a separate note, not sure if this edit is still going or not, but the Lando reel (edited with existing SW footage to give the tone of the show to investors) uses Cowboy Bebop music under it.

It was really fun to see, and that tone may be coming to that series.

I think Lord & Miller’s take would’ve been far better. A nice silly adventure instead of a generic one.

I mean, I loved Spaceballs… but I’m glad they decided to keep the tone of Solo fun but still connected and grounded to the rest of Star Wars. Lord & Miller didn’t want to do that, and their version would’ve been like making Lego Star Wars canon (which, it’s not).

The generic aspect comes from having Ron Howard be the replacement… that doesn’t mean Lord & Miller would’ve been better, just that Howard was the wrong choice.

I do think the Lando series will give you the tone you want though.

I’m still stoked about this finishing this, but I’m pacing myself so that I don’t burn out like I did with NCC

As far as I’m concerned, anything that involves Cowboy Bebop is a winner in my book. Take care of yourself. Whatever ensures the completion of this edit works for me, even if that means protecting yourself from burnout.

I have altered Lucas’ visions. Pray I don’t alter them any further.

Oh, that darned canon. Wouldn’t it be easier if it all just… blew away?

My stance on revising fan edits.

This sounds like a really interesting idea. Did it ever progress to a final cut?

Man, this would’ve been really cool, but It definitely would take a LOT of work and time. Hey, atleast you got the concept out there!
