Hoichi, just keep an eye on my info/feedback thread, it has all the details relating to my trilogy transfer.

Ok, anyone know of a freeware mpeg2 cut/join tool? the ESB SL & DL & PAL & NTSC mpeg2 files are encoded but playing back I notice the black level jumps up noticably when the STAR WARS logo goes into the distance (not my encoding/filtering fault, it's like that on the disc) and I only really saw it once playing them back on a tv, so I'd like to just re-encode that part and splice it back into the 4 mpeg2 files that took almost 2 days to encode. TMPGEnc doesn't work with them because of the high filesizes. It'd be much quicker to splice fixed clips back in than re-encode the whole damn lot.

Another interesting point to note about this set; Empire and Jedi do not have the 20th Century Fox fanfare. Instead it has been replaced with the CBS Fox home video intro.

A little strange to watch, because everyone is used to the fanfare continuing to play into the "Lucasfilm" logo, however on these tapes the CBS/Fox music has finished by the time Lucasfilm appears.

(I expect that now, due to this unique feature, the more dedicated geek members of the forum will be clamouring for a straight transfer of this set... )

Oh yes, sorry about the off-topic post. What I meant to say is that I also noticed the black level inconsistency on the French laserdisc.

MPEG VCR might do the trick, I think the company is wombler or something like that, sorry my computer is busy so can not check the name. It was a free 30 trial.

You're close, sega, it's Womble.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

those covers bug me, Obi-wan's light saber is at the wrong angle! especially annoying because the picture is based on one of him holding a saber, it was drawn without one and then they added one at a stupid angle.

Thanks segaflip, I'll give it a try, if I find the process too much of a hassle or can't cut out & replace exactly the right number of frames, I'll just do the mpeg2 encoding process all over again - delaying everything by 2 days but safe in the knowledge things will be ok framecount wise.

Max_Rebo, kinda like this?

It took us only a couple of days to move all our stuff to the new house, but the phone company two weeks to move an ADSL connection! Two weeks without internet at home really is a torment. But thanks to Sega I managed to complete your PAL DL version. Great one, knocked Moth3r off the first place. Reasons:

- no colors flying around
- no lines next to objects
- less filtering resulting in less side-effects
- less noise
- saturation/color-balance is right

But the are two things that caught my eye: although the noise has been reduced compared to Moth3r, it is not gone by far, though I really expected that, any theories? And sometimes there can be some quite noticeable dotcrawl, what do you think has caused that? But don't get me wrong, to my eyes it seems perfect in every other way.

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

Hmmm...I doubt that, for surely it should be just as easy to edit that out & put the fanfare back in...

The noise you're seeing is what's on the laserdisc, the 5x capture-merge system meant I could do away with temporal softening as the picture you get is as close to what's on the laserdisc as possible.
I intentionally left the noise there for a couple of reasons; if I were to add a temporal softener filter to reduce this noise it would mean even more motion smearing and I hate that kind of smearing so I don't use temporal softeners unless I really have to, secondly to maintain an overall even quality picture feel to it because removing the noise through temporal softening would mean when there's no camera movement the picture would look extremely crisp & clean but when things started moving the noise level would increase and look worse than if the static scene already had some noise.

The dotcrawl could be because of the capture device I use, a Canopus ADVC-100 which converts the analogue video to DV so there's some compression artifacts, the 5x capture-merge and subsequent filtering helped reduce some of the compression artifacts but probably not entirely.

Yes laserdiscs are noisy and also keep in mind that the PAL standard is aprox 3 dB noisier than the NTSC standard due to the higher bandwidth and no multi-capture-averaging process can change that, it can only reduce random noise in the capture chain, which of course is still very important.

But I wonder if the noise could be reduced even further by averaging 4-5 french or 4-5 german discs of the same release through the same capture chain, intheory manufacture imperfections like noise and dropouts would then also be reduced, but maybe it would require discs that are manufactured at the same plant and almost at the same time. Anyway it was just a thought and the discs would also need to be captured 4-5 times each so we talking about 16-25 captures and who has 4-5 discs of the same ANH release..?..

Regarding the dotcrawl, I think the ADVC-100 uses a Philips saa7114 capture chip and this has a 2D 2-4 line adaptive combfilter which is quite good, better results could possibly be achieved with a 3D combfilter but those are not so common for PAL capture devices.

BTW, Citizen keep up the great work.

I will be saving the original captured video (30gb) on a pile of blank DVDs, possiblity to do a multi-lingual version would be there but somehow I can't see myself doing it what with most people wanting the DVDs I'm making being able to read/speak English.

Ah, I see. Hm. Is there any way I could be of help? Shouldn't it be possible to use your work and add other audio/subtitle tracks? And maybe the opening crawls could be set by using the "angle"-function? I guess I have to read a bit up on DVD-authoring ... Anybody here using a Mac too and willing to point me where to start?

I love the u.k. artwork chosen for the 1995 release, whereas we got the faces art here in the u.s.

The painted artwork gives it a nice touch. How come no one has ever used dave dorman art, or ralph mcquarrie art for dvd covers?

I updated my info/feedback thread last week saying I'd finished the XviD ESB but nobody noticed

I wish making the DVDs was as easy as making the XviD file, takes bloody ages to encode the audio & video files for 4 different versions! spent the whole of Saturday just doing the 5.1 mix.

Again, awesome work.

howdy citizen, i have downloaded both the new hope and empire strikes back xvids, and i am very pleased with your results (patiently awaiting reurn of the jedi). I am going to encode these to dvd myself, as well as keep the xvids, and i was wondering if it was possible if you or someone else could provide the 5.1 track available on your dvd's (another 12 gig download just to get the 5.1 is too much for my limited bandwidth)

. Is this too much to ask?

cheers and keep up the great work!!

Sorry I don't have a fast enough connection to upload 1.2gb of AC3 files (400mb per film).

ESB is 99% complete, the DVDs are fully authored except for the trailers & chapter menus, so just need to encode the trailers and do the images for the chapter stop and I'm finished which means DVDs being posted out on this Monday the 29th.

Playing ESB back I noticed something wrong with my 5.1 upmix, the rear channels were swapped! a quick re-encode from the source wavs and all is well, but wondering if ANH is affected in the same way... I didn't notice anything during the numerous times I've watched ANH with my 5.1 upmix so either it's fine or their stereo surround encoding just treated the rear speakers as one.

Hey didn't GL intend for the rear channels to be swapped? That's what he said about the DVD...

Scanning through the film for chapter stop stills I saw this one and couldn't resist, you know what it's like after a long journey (I used this version in the chapter stops!)

Also yesterday I picked up something ESB related, ever since I saw ESB I always wanted one of these!

(the cat insisted on being in on the picture, the AT-AT just needs a replacement side gun, chin guns & a few stickers, but the chin gun motor & bulb still works )

Finalising the ESB DVDs took a little longer than I'd hoped (too tired on Sunday and Monday it snowed ) but they're authored and completed, just need to update my info/feedback thread.

On a side note I just tried my new technique of applying forwards & backwards temporal smoothing then merging the two avis, on 3 minutes of saber fight scenes from ESB and OH...MY...GOD... the video looks absolutely STUNNING, the additional temporal smoothing is barely noticable against the temporal smoothing already applied when they made the laserdiscs, but now there's virtually no background noise in the picture and it looks cleaner than ever.

I'll do ROTJ the same way I did ANH & ESB to keep things consistant but somehow I think a v2 set may be in the works next year... either using the saved captures from my current transfer, or hopefully using something like the Japanese Special Collection laserdiscs which don't already have any temporal smoothing applied.
