Do these missing scenes actually exist?

I read the following article many years ago, there are some interesting mentions about an early trailer for ROTJ:

http://webspace.webring.com/people/au/um_7143/lost_sw.txt

Quote: “There is at least one more “early ROTJ” trailer then what was included on [Definitive Collection] discs, one shown during a re-release of “Star Wars” between the release of “TESB” and “ROTJ.” It featured a glowing chain around Vader’s neck (possibly just highly reflective) and had Vader and Luke within some kind of ancient Greek-like structure. [I saw it] as part of a tape with various “SW” related items on it. Until then all I had was a [memory of seeing it] with my parents just before a re-release of “SW” (I wish I could remember the date, or for that matter the year). It’s one of the few memories I have of seeing “Star Wars” in theaters that hasn’t been corrupted by time on the Internet (i.e., “Hey, I think I remember that scene too…” variety) It must have been pretty darn rare, as I have yet to see anyone else mention it.”

Also remember reading an article either in 1993 or 1994, in a german scifi, horror and fantasy movie magazine named Moviestar that there is a cut scene in ESB with Luke fighting inside an AT-AT during the battle of Hoth and that footage about Leia and Han’s wedding was filmed for ROTJ.

Wonder if there is actually some truth about these claims and if these things may actually lay still undiscovered in the archives of Lucasfilm.

Maybe like it was the case with the rough cut for Star Wars…

This is really interesting. I’d suggest reaching out to Pablo Hidalgo on Twitter. He tends to be very knowledgeable with stuff like this.

Move along, move along.

I’m gonna definitely say no to both claims here. This is the first I’m hearing of it and there has never been any mention of any scene in anything I’ve ever read, watched or listened to.

There are a lot of early internet rumours on that linked page, always fun to read mid-90s myths.

“A friend of mine was just telling me about the Leia-Vader torture scene. She said that she was reading an interview with Carrie Fisher, and in the article she described the scene as the most awful day of filming on the set. She described the scene in very much the same way it was portrayed in the [NPR] radio drama. She described being hung upside down while they filmed her being tortured until she eventually passed out. She then noted how pissed she was when she saw that it had been cut from the movie”

Found another interesting comment about Han and Leias wedding on a german site about cutscenes:

"Also from me a big thank you for the SB’s of the original trilogy. But I also have a question about the deleted scenes, could it be that a scene has been forgotten? Years ago I saw a little piece of the wedding between Leia & Han on Dutch TV, in a cinema show (which at the time also aired the other end of little shop of horror from 86). This has stuck in my head to this day and for this reason I now ask whether the author of the SB can perhaps shed some light on this as well?

Thank you and also from me: May the force be with you!!! Greetings from charmingbaer"

It’s also strange that apparently no one either asked Rinzler or Hidalgo about these rumors and/or noone from Lucasfilm so far denied that these scenes at least may have existed.

As someone who loves deleted scenes, and specifically Star Wars deleted scenes, there is no deleted wedding scene.

I’ve read several drafts of ROTJ, story treatments and development notes, and books upon books of making-of material. I’ve looked at call sheets, photos, raw footage, dallies, pre-vis, concept art, animatics and anything and everything related to deleted scenes.
I can safely say there was never any wedding scene shot or shown anywhere in the world on any international TV station, or early showing, or uncle’s VHS tape, or George’s garage.
Potentially this was some idea that was floated in early production, or during the late 70s with George planning out his larger 9-15 film saga, but there is no evidence to support this.
Most drafts end on Endor/Had Abbadon, celebrating the Empire’s defeat, with no reference to Han/Leia planning to get hitched.

There wasn’t even a wedding mentioned until 93 with the Prophets of the Dark Side novel. The new canon now says they snuck away on Endor to get married, but that wasn’t until 2017, in Aftermath: Life Debt.

Basically, there is no wedding scene that was scripted, storyboarded or shot in any shape or form.

These things fascinate me too.

Do you think it’s possible that Lucas, Kershner or Marquand shot scenes that are possibly still unknown by now and not to be found in any of the drafts and that we never ever heard of?

And that were possibly never were used for adaptions like the novelizations or comics or mentioned anywhere.

Is such a thing really possible, considering all the things we know by now about the making of the OT?

If there was something shot that we didn’t know about, it wouldn’t be big scenes, it would be little things. 2nd unit stuff like the Battle of Endor pilots, or extra footage of action scenes, inserts or alternate angles of scenes, or original versions of scenes later reshot.
At this stage, with what we know about the OT, in my opinion, there is very little deleted material we don’t know about, and certainly not a wedding scene. If there was any big scenes that haven’t seen the light of day, we would certainly know of it, due to interviews, storyboards, call sheets, script drafts, novelisations, comics, storybooks, on-set footage, or just anything.

So basically no additional story elements, dialogues or anything with alternative worldbuilding information like Han with the girl (Jenny?) in the cantina during the rough cut for ANH?

There are probably some alternate line deliveries, or different pieces of dialogue that suggest other things. Han saying “That bounty hunter we ran into on Ord Mantell changed my mind” was cut, which implies another adventure they had before ESB, for example.
It is likely however, that we generally know about just about everything that was cut, and that there aren’t any big subplots, sequences or scenes that have been cut out or kept under wraps.
People will debate forever still though that Luke missed the first time during their chasm swing, or Leia spat on Tarkin, or Vader’s TIE exploded, or the Biggs scenes were in there from the start. It’s fun to think about, but it’ll never be proven in anyway.

By the way, to come back to the speculated about additional AT-AT scene, is it known if a set for the compartment for the stormtroopers inside the walker was ever built for ESB?

Can’t remember ever reading anything about it, but if they built it, i’d guess they would have used it at least for some test sequences.

I have no idea what scene you’re talking about, so I’m gonna say no to all that.

The article i mentioned in my first post, pretended that a scene would exist with Luke opening up an AT-AT from below with his lightsaber, similar to the existing scene in ESB where Luke uses this trick to bring explosives inside the walker to stop it with the detonation, enters it to fight with the stormtroopers inside.

Could imagine that during the production someone may have had this idea and shoot some test scenes for this, before abandoning the concept.

There weren’t many test shoots for the OT, and if they were, they were for puppets, or VFX, or something they knew they needed to get right on set, like Yoda, Jabba, the Rancor, Lightsabers, droids, or costume tests. These wouldn’t be done on finished sets, or with dressed actors, but to see how the mechanics of a creature, make-up or mechanism works on camera. They were usually pretty meticulous about planning ahead of time, and wouldn’t waste time/money/effort to shoot something like an AT-AT full of stormtroopers (?) just to abandon it.

Once again, there is no script, storyboard, photographic, video or proof of any kind to suggest that such a sequence would of been shot or test shot or anything.

In the future, I implore you to look at tbone’s Star Wars Universe of Cut Scenes, as it is by far the most comprehensive archive of articles on deleted scenes in Ep1-6. Everything mentioned that had been cut is backed up by various sources and is extremely detailed.

I think this is part of a big Mandela Effect that some people have related to Star Wars i also think they are confusing it with the Courtship of Princess Leia commercial a EU book where Han and Leia got married

Hi, an fun fact about the Wedding Ending is the Comic Spoof of RotJ from the Mad Magazine back in Jan. 84 form the cartoonist Mort Drucker. In this spoof you actually see the Wedding of Leia and Han at the last panel of the comic.

I had always wondered if thoose cartoonists might got some screenplays or scripts of the oriignal movies where they are about to be spoofed.

That doesn’t seem like it proves anything. It’s just that since Han and Leia declare their love for each other and share a big kiss after the Death Star blows up, it only makes sense for a parody cartoonist to add a wedding scene. It’s been pretty conclusively proven that no such scene was even considered for the actual movie.

After Wedge downs the AT-AT with the tow cable that scene was expanded upon in story boards basically the rebel troops and the Storm Troopers were to have a small gun battle outside the downed AT-AT and the troops running out the trench shouting “Come on!” is still in the film but the rest is it is likely un-filmed or unfinished. They just blew it up it was easier.

It is very interesting and intriguing the idea that Deleted Scenes that nobody knows about can exist and that they are now Lost Media

Which never really made much sense. Somehow, falling down makes the metal easier to penetrate. They should have just cut away after the AT-AT fell - that’s enough for the audience to understand it was taken out.
