Star Wars - The Purple Planet Saga (a WIP) — Page 2

For now Coruscant as Exegol isn’t happening. I’ve already completely abandoned making the DSII Coruscant since it created way too many issues, and since there’s already a smoother alternative in the form of making it the same Death Star from ANH. Exegol being Coruscant only creates one in the question of how a massive fleet stayed hidden on the former Galactic Capital. If that can be solved the only obstacle will be technical, which, like with turning Pasaana Tropical, are big enough to postpone indefinitely, as I, at least for the time being, lack the necessary skills to pull it off.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of ending TRoS with Rey sacrificing the entire Resistance to destroy the entire Final Order, sorta like the Moment in Doctor Who. It’s a pyrrhic victory. Everyone is dead except Ben and Rey. Makes for an ending that’s decidedly quite different than RotJ and somehow feels more poignant.

It also works really well with my rhyming scheme where the Prequels and Originals are opposites and the Sequels are a balance between the two. The Prequels end badly, the Originals end well, so it only makes sense the Sequels would end bittersweet.

I think that it would be worth trying to make Dooku and Palpatine meet on Exegol at the end of Attack of the Clones. This adds a greater continuity between the PT and ST.

Author
Time

Nah. It makes more sense for them to meet on Coruscant, and if anything, I’d like to replace Exegol with Coruscant instead.

Does anybody have any idea how I could execute my whole “everybody dies” idea for TRoS? All I can think of is Palpatine’s death causing him to explode into the repurposed lightning from earlier that zaps the entire fleet but this time they don’t recover and all crash. The idea would need some serious fleshing out, and it doesn’t feel quite right to begin with.

How much of ESB: Revisited did you decide to add to your ESB edit? I think that at the very minimum the Emperor scene from Revisited should be included.

Author
Time

I’ve never seen Revisited but I do plan on using the Emperor scene from it.

I think I’m gonna change the purple planet from Teth to Onderon, as it’s a much closer fit to the look I’m going for. They’re both in TCW so what difference does it make (besides some SWTOR fanboys squealing). Teth has absolutely everything purple, including sky and rocks, whereas I prefer having just the plants in purple, like Onderon.

Teth

Onderon

Kinda hate that Onderon has a name that’s so similar to Alderaan though.

Ohhh wow only now catching up with this thread Anakin, some really good ideas👍

After messing around I managed to change the sky color on Pasaana to green. I could also go for a deeper cyan, maybe blue, but other colors would just create too many artifacts. After some fine-tuning the resulting grade looked great to me, although it would require fixing the lightsaber color in a few shots. However, I don’t really feel confident in using it. It feels like not enough and also cheap reusing the same gimmick as Onderon by recoloring something already there. It kinda makes me wanna work on my tropical Pasaana idea, but I know right now I don’t have the motivation to dive head-deep back into the editing room again, and even before didn’t have the will to learn all the CGI shenanigans it would take to add palm trees.

Btw I redid all the purple for Onderon in a different program with better color grading tools, and it looks fantastic in most shots. Alas there are still many others where it’s too yellow to recolor properly. Not sure what to do about those.

Are there plans for a mono mix for A New Hope and stereo mixes for Empire and Jedi? These theatrical cut mixes sound far better than the DVD and later Special Edition mixes.

Author

I don’t really know and I don’t really care. In theory, there should be stereo mixes for all nine films.

I’d recommend you kept Teth. It’s a big planet, no reason it would all look like that.

Reading R + L ≠ J theories

Really, it’s all in a name that won’t be uttered onscreen, so it doesn’t really matter. My current story is that the planet is named Ajan Kloss and Onderon is the same planet, much like how I have Jakku as another name for Tatooine. In Jakku’s case I’d like to make it explicit onscreen if possible, however, as it’s a location relevant to the rest of the Saga.

If you’re choosing stereo, uncompressed PCM stereo from the original trilogy and Phantom Menace Laserdiscs would maintain better sound quality than downmixing 5.1 sources. Both the theatrical cut and Special Edition were issued on the format.

I’m just using straight Blu-Ray rips in 1080p stereo (2011 editions for I-VI) as it stands. I’ve been trying to preserve the Spanish and French audio tracks too (sorry Portuguese but you weren’t in my copies of the Sequels) but it’s a pretty big obstacle for dialog changes, especially since I don’t speak Spanish.

How about offer 2 audio options: English Stereo and Stereo Isolated Score with subtitles in English, French & Spanish? This would make it just as accessible to international viewers while reducing the workload.

By the way, I have a basic understanding of Spanish.

Subtitles are indeed the easy way out. Not like the French dubs are anything impressive. I’d love to redo them with proper accents.

I would like there to be an enhanced Alderaan explosion effect, as neither the theatrical nor the Special Edition effects were satisfactory. I’d like to see new practical effects of the planet on fire before exploding and creating an asteroid field.

Author

I ain’t doing a new explosion effect, but I might browse from those already in existence. Honestly I don’t care that much about it.

Wait, actually, I’m supposed to make the Death Star survive ANH. I think that’s gonna necessitate a custom explosion that leaves it partially intact.

You could replace the Death Star explosion with the explosion of Krypton from Man of Steel. That explosion shows the planet breaking into chunks rather than disintegrating, and there’s a giant crater in the wreckage that looks similar to the Death Star superlaser. I remember seeing another edit that used that explosion, and it looked pretty good.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:
I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX

Too visibly terrestrial, and I don’t think the way it’s shot would work in this context.

If the new ANH Death Star explosion effect doesn’t have a shockwave, then the repaired Death Star’s shockwave should be removed using 4K83.

Yesterday I spent all day working on my edits after not really touching them for a while. Today I decided I was happy with the preliminary color grade so rendered it. I still need to manually correct certain things by combining the altered footage with the original footage, but the actual palette is pretty much locked at this point. Here’s a sneak peak:

Ajan Kloss Purple

Pasaana Green Sky

In terms of actual non-color editing, I’ve come up with a cut of the Battle of Exegol that’s good enough for me. I couldn’t get rid of the spirit transfer ritual, but I removed the reference to Palpatine having the spirit of every other Sith in him. This is Palpatine’s Saga, so I wanna keep the focus as a villain squarely on him. The grandfather stuff is obviously all gone, but I still need to come up with replacements for shots I removed where Poe talks about the cannons. I have left the cannons themselves in for my own sanity but they’re never mentioned so one can assume they’re just standard canons, at most comparable to those of dreadnoughts, which does warrant them treating the fleet as such a threat.

The Prequels are done, and the Sequels are just missing various replacement shots. Now I gotta dive into the Originals. Gonna need to look through all the various changes made to them over the years as my buffet to choose from. If I’m feeling brave, maybe I can even pull off a new Death Star explosion to combine the two battle stations as I’d like to, although as it stands I fear that won’t be happening in this coming release. As for future releases, I think they’d only occur should there be some major upgrade in my editing abilities such that I could achieve various changes that have thus far proven to ambitious to pull off. Then again, I might make some minor tweaks from time to time as well. We’ll see.
