Newest hungarian voice-over/pirate bootleg videos found!

ROTJ Voice-over dubbed, its 8nd variant! —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuqskEfpj6I

I haven’t heard these before.

Star Wars pirate version?! —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHaCMSjVew8

This is really a good old '80s vhs material!! Its sounds good. If, on the other hand, you already have Stereo (I can’t hear that), then the copy itself, the It was made in the early '90s.

Just new to this, but does anyone here happen to have the Japanese dubs of the Sequel Trilogy in either stereo or 5.1?

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

I apologize to anyone who downloaded my synced Romanian voiceover dub on my glowing recommendation earlier. It turned out I screwed up the encode (among other things) and it didn’t really represent the quality of that audio very well. I’ll have a better version available shortly.

FYI – all of the dubs in my personal collection are now available synced to NTSC GOUT (Despecialized, 4K77), and theatrical (4K83), with the exception of Turkish. All future 4Kxx and Despecialized releases will be theatrically synced, but in the meantime, you just need to be careful which audio you use.

The reason Turkish isn’t included is because I’m currently syncing/despecializing a new Turkish dub, which should get rid of the problem with the Emperor scene in ESB. Once that’s done, that new dub will be available synced to both frame standards.

Thanks to ArdaYlcn, I’ve got another Turkish dub, and this one will replace the one in my current collection.

The old despecialized dub was great, except for one issue. The Emperor scene in Empire Strikes Back was missing, so initially it was filled with English, then eventually I filled it with a different pre-SE dub. But Vader’s voice in that scene still didn’t match the rest of the film at all, and the overall quality difference between the two sources was obvious and annoying.

The new dub is the 2015 iTunes dub (despecialized, of course), and it’s complete (finally!). And unlike some other Turkish dubs, it’s not missing the score, and Chewbacca isn’t dubbed, so it’s pretty faithful to the films in that respect. What I notice most about this dub is the voice matching. For the most part, they found actors who sounded very much like the original actors. So many dubs get Leia very wrong, but not this one. And in some moments I thought “Billy Dee Williams speaks fluent Turkish? Wow!” Luke is cast a little younger than most dubs. This makes it easy to distinguish between him & Han (which can be an issue on some dubs), and the younger voice really goes well with the young Mark Hamill in Star Wars. But it doesn’t quite work as well in Jedi IMO.

I’ve asked ArdaYlcn to do some quality checks on this first, and then it will be available soon afterward.

EDIT: Also, this new dub will require new “titles” subtitles, which will be included in the next Project Threepio release.

Again thanks to ArdaYcln, we now have Persian/Farsi dubs. These are apparently unauthorized pirate dubs, in the style of the original Turkish dubs, where instead of voicing over the English soundtrack, they replace the English dialogue and filled in the background music and SFX to match. In this case, they did a much better job of blending with the rest of the film… some of the time. In fact, I really wonder if they really did somehow use a voices-free soundtrack for some parts of the films, but then use really out of place and mismatched audio for other parts. It’s a weird mix, at least in terms of technical execution.

The sync was pretty haphazard but it’s much improved in the despecialized versions, and unfortunately there are missing sections, patched in with English. Those will be covered with Persian titles-only subtitles in the next version of Project Threepio.

At the moment, only Star Wars is synced, and available in the usual places. The other films are being worked on.

I’ve synced the 2011 Czech Blu-ray dubs, to replace the early nineties dubs in my collection. These turned out really well and are the nicest despecialized audio tracks I’ve done yet.

I’ve also synced the Farsi dub for ROTJ, and I’m now dreading having no other audio projects to do except the Farsi dub for Empire. These pirate dubs are really not great, and are woefully incomplete. I swear Empire is half in English, just from the scenes they didn’t dub. But it’s the only Farsi audio we have, so I’ll do what I can.

On the other end of the quality spectrum, the Persian dubs are now as complete as I can get them. They’ll require an update to Project Threepio to cover the extensive sections that remain undubbed.

Double checking the Cantonese dub, I can tell that they were made by TVB. However, Chinese Wikipedia lists those made in 2005 instead of mid 90s speculated by simps (unless one of them are wrong). It doesn’t list the voice actors but I went backwards because I recognized the voices from other dubs they did. I’ll list the main trio, their actors and other roles they did:

Luke - Pasu Leung, Heero Yuy, Meowth, Frodo Baggins in Jackson’s LOTR (Only in Fellowship, Towers and The Hobbit).
Han - Kenneth Chan, The narrator in Chibi Maruko-chan, Kogoro Mori, Tom “Neo” Anderson.
Leia - Jingle Tsang, Sailor Moon, Yugi Mutou.

Interesting to see how that these actors did all kinds of dubs, which makes sense for a TV station. If there’s any Chinese speakers I would like to have someone reverse engineer the rest of the cast.

The 2005 date is likely the correct one for the dubs in my collection. I don’t recall having to remove the scream when Luke fell into the chasm, which would place the ESB dub as post-2004. However, there may have been ANOTHER Cantonese TV dub in the mid 90’s to which simps is referring. Multiple dubs are not uncommon.

Okay, I’ve synced the first Indonesian dub and plan to proceed with the rest (available in the normal places). The Star Wars dub was bowdlerized – that is to say, someone had edited out all the naughty bits – and so it was a real pain to restore, and there are parts missing, which revert back to English. Sadly, this is the only version of the Indonesian dub I have access to right now, but the next version of Project Threepio will include Indonesian “titles” subtitles, to translate the untranslated parts.

What people consider to be naughty can be pretty idiosyncratic, and I’m guessing in parts due to not having the accompanying edited video, but this appears to be the naughty bits of Star Wars: any dead body or severed body part, any closeup of anyone shooting a gun or brandishing it in a dangerous manner (people getting shot not an issue), Leia hugging Han (but hugging Chewbacca and kissing Luke is OK), people drinking, smoking, or talking about engaging in illegal activities such as smuggling. And misc other things I couldn’t figure out.

Most other parts of the film were largely intact, but the cantina and the Death Star were edited to shreds. Thankfully, only a few lines of dialogue were lost because a lot of the cut scenes had no dialogue. But still… ugh. Although as someone who actively edits out parts of the film added in 1997 or later so that it syncs to fan edits of an out-of-print version of the film, maybe I shouldn’t throw stones.

Either way, I don’t think the other films, or dubs in other languages, have this problem. Just a one-off. But I’ll be holding off on releasing that new Project Threepio until I can confirm there aren’t similar problems in any of the other dubs.

Indonesian dubs are synced and despecialized for the whole trilogy, available in the usual locations. Star Wars was the only dub that was cut/incomplete, which leads me to believe the full dub is out there somewhere. If I get it, I’ll sync it. Project Threepio subtitles for the untranslated sections will come after I’m through more of these languages (i.e. to verify what sort of accompanying subtitles the other dubs may need).

Malaysian dubs are synced and despecialized, as well as Ukrainian dubs, which replace the Ukrainian voiceovers in my collection. Like the Indonesian dub of Star Wars, the Malaysian dub of Jedi had some content editing for a TV station. Not too bad, most of it was dialogue-free cuts which were recoverable, but a couple lines were lost and are patched in with English.
