I decided to release another workprint (v105) which has all of the latest changes. It’s now in the folder with the rest, so if you have the link to any workprint you have them all.

Mind shooting a link my way NeverarGreat? Hopefully I should be able to find the time this weekend. And I’ll be ready to bring in some thoughts!

Before the new Falcon footage I would have said keep the child laughter. But yeah, it works fantastic as-is. Lots of time for you to realize what he’s thinking about.

Sorry about the double post, but in the standard edition I don’t see any plans for the following changes from Restructured:

“Color corrected Ach-to to bring it a little closer to the corresponding scene’s lighting and weather conditions in The Last Jedi.
Added a few subtle porg sounds to the background, replacing two native bird sounds”

Are those still going to be included or are you opting out of those?

Oh yeah, I’m basically just taking Restructured’s changes for the end of the film. Thanks for pointing that out 😃

Sweet! After reading through the change log I’m really enjoying what else you’ve done here. Could I have a link as well?

I love the New Republic destruction bit, it works really well. The Kylo deleted scene is amazing too, definitely going to use that in a personal edit. I also really like the idea of showing Rey actually having dreams of the island, but I don’t know if I would use the entire dream sequence because you would have to reuse sequences from TLJ. I think it might be nice to have a quick vision of Ahch To and maybe Luke there and keep the original ending, but that’s just my preference. I love the night shots though, they’re gorgeous. Great work!

Man this is coming together so great. I’d like a workprint for V3!

PM Sent!

I’m planning to use as much TFA footage in the alternate ending as possible. The TLJ footage of her waking up will be replaced with a more straightforward image of the island.

That’s the plan anyway, but I don’t need to worry about that for a while since that won’t be in Starlight Standard.

There’s some damn fine sequences in there. I especially like the feel of the post-Phasma-shields sequence.
And the new music and arrangement as Rey taps into the Force during the duel.

Fortunately for me, I don’t think there’s much I’d want to cull for Restructured. Partly because you have put together a gordian knot in many places.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Watching through this edit, I realized that we don’t get Ben’s name until his confrontation with Han. I thought I had just cut a line somewhere, but no, that’s actually how it is in the theatrical as well. Even odder, Rey and Finn only arrive in the scene after he says it, so they don’t learn his name onscreen in this film. Rey has to learn his name from Luke in TLJ, as far as we know. We’re not even sure if she suspects Ben’s relationship with Han until their confrontation at the end of the film, which is odd since she’s one of our POV characters and we know this information less than halfway through the film in the Theatrical version.

Maybe keeping Ben’s name a secret for so long was to drag out the mystery of his full identity, but we know basically everything about him before that so there seems little reason for it.

All this to say, I thought it would be interesting to work in Ben’s name earlier in the film. It would be fairly easy to put this info during Rey’s force vision by having audio of Luke’s “Ben, no!” when he is killing in the rain. That way Rey and the audience learn his name at the same time, and it’s close to the confirmation of his familial origin.

What would be even better would be to have Rey use this information during her interrogation to rattle Ben instead of talking about how he fears not being as strong as Vader, which isn’t really supported by the rest of the sequels. I tried making her final line ‘You’re afraid…that you will never be [] strong as Ben Solo!’, but it is an odd sentence structure that loses its original impact. The ideal line would have been ‘You’re afraid…that you will never be more than Ben Solo!’, but of course that would have to be frankenstitched to death.

Ah well.

Another issue that’s become apparent on rewatch is small, but crucial. The moment where the Starkiller is falling apart around Rey before she is rescued by Chewie is brief in the Theatrical version but functional. In Restructured and in this project however, I’ve had to all but remove the moment, hamstringing the emotion of the scene.

My fix is to kill two birds with one stone and move the shot of the massive chasm opening up between Kylo and Rey, opting for a smaller crack in the ground to stop their fight. The big fissure now happens when the planet is more clearly doomed, and it has allowed me to go back in and fix the Restructured issue of a half-dozen time-stretched and glitchy shots where Rey is rescued:

What would really sell the moment would be to animate the chasm opening up in the wide shot of Rey and Finn in the forest, since here it remains just a dark, hardly visible smudge in the background.

I’d love to see what you have of this so far. It sounds great!

Did you sort of make the Falcon light a little red and ominous at first to make the audience think it is the planet’s erupting magma (hinting at eminent danger for Rey and Finn), but then it becoming the white light of the Falcon’s spotlights? If so, really nice touch!

Maybe it is because I’m looking at the scene independently from the film, but the pacing of the shots feel a little prolonged, in particular the wide shot we sit on before it cuts to the chasm opening shots.

I’m just spitballing, but I wonder if it would help if the sound of the earth cracking could slowly get louder as we get closer to the actual cracking shots. I also wonder if that second wide shot could use a little more camera shake, and then become more stable as the Falcon light becomes more prominent.

Yep, the light is red for the magma. I really wanted to give the scene that extra drama because even though we know she’s going to be rescued I believe it still gives a bit of unconscious tension 😉

It’s definitely a more prolonged sequence than in the theatrical, but it feels to me like the theatrical is rushed in this regard. You’re right that the sound effects are not totally there, a second pass at those will hopefully make it more natural like the chasms are opening closer and closer as time goes by.

I’ll definitely see about adding more camera shake and dynamism in the wide shots after playing around with putting some chasm motion in the upper right.

I’ve replaced the video with the new version, which has a more normal speed establishing shot with some glow in the chasm followed by an extended closeup of the new chasm, then more glow in the last establishing shot. Audio has been tweaked as well.
