Topaz Video Enhance AI would be your best bet for getting 4K footage out of a 1080p source. You’d only need to upscale the puppets and the cleaned background, right, because the rest is the same as the theatrical and could just be matted back in from the 4K source.

It’s so weird and wild seeing my puppet designs actually fabricated, put into motion, and put into the movie. I feel like I got to do the fun bit and RL did the hard work. I’m absolutely floored by the result, and I’m very proud to be part of it all.

I’m glad you’re happy with how it turned out! Honestly, your enthusiastic message offering to help with the puppets is what really gave me the push to do this. I would’ve been stuck on the puppet designs forever if wasn’t for you!

A one shot alternative might be slowing down the plate as much as possible before it looks weird, they laying the puppet show in. If we could see it for even just a few more frames it could help registering what’s going on more.

Not a bad idea, and this could potentially be applied to both a one or two shot version. I wonder what the limit would be before the slow motion became noticeable? I’m not really familiar with the best methods of extending shots. That was something you did with a few moments in TROS, right?

Sade, you clever bastard. And I actually filmed the puppets at 4K, so all that has to be upscaled is the cleaned background.

I’ll see about trying to upscale the plate later today/tomorrow, but if anyone else wanted to have a go at it, here is the Google drive link Poppa provided awhile back for the clean plate.

Holy *EXCITED bad language!!!

Dude! This is absolutely INCREDIBLE!!! It’s exactly how I envisioned it to be. OMG YES!

Once you’re fully happy with it are you about to share the separate layer and audio? I’d love to get this beauty onscreen as long as possible. 😍

Outstanding!! 👏👏👏

You know what? I don’t know how high of resolution the clean plate was rendered at, but I’d love to be able to linger on this moment a little longer. Like, maybe we could cut to a closeup of the stage, and do a little more with the puppets before the one kid laughs? It would be a great moment to help slow the pacing and take a breath before all of the Kylo nonsense starts up again.

I don’t have access to a 4K version of the original so the clean plate is 1080p h.264 YUV 10-bit but it’s literally a few seconds. If someone could provide the 4k version without the weird colour-coded change maybe Poppa can switch up the source file and do a new render between baby feeds? 😉 or if Poppa could be kind enough to share the .aep file maybe I could try to do it?

I’m wonna try to squeeze as much out of it as possible as this is absolutely stunning and needs to be on screen as long as it can be without looking too slowed down.

RL if you could double the scene that would be awesome. 1 shot move into place i.e. AT-AT doing a comical walk forward to linger on puppets. 2nd shot fireball and Luke bouncing it back like a Tennis ball?

Does anyone have a link to the original idea image of the AT-AT for comparison?

I just use optical flow in Premiere (although I’d assume After Effects has it too?). Results vary wildly, sometimes you can really stretch it without it looking slowed down at all. The more movement the trickier it becomes. In this shot I think the smoke could really fuck it up. But worth giving it a try, should be able to gain at least a few frames I’d hope.

JEDIT: Well unfortunately I tried it out and I was right about the smoke. So optical flow is out of the question. In that case you just gotta go with the default frame sampling. Some quick test suggest to me that you can probably only buy about 4 or 5 frames before it starts looking obvious. Which I suppose is better than nothing. If someone really wanted to waste their time I can see ways to use VFX to make things more seamless (selectively picking parts of the frame to use optical flow, trying to remove the smoke altogether, adding new smoke that doesn’t look slowed down, etc.) but those might all be overkill. An extra couple frames might be fine. Or hopefully we can see if we can do the punch-in shot.

Puppets look amazing! They’re so good that I definitely agree that we need at least one more shot of them so I can appreciate them as much as possible. I think if this was in the actual movie there would be a close-up of the puppets after the first shot because you’re actually supposed to see what they are, as opposed to the theatrical which is just some random puppet.

Puppet show looks AMAZING! I fully support the idea to extend it with a zoomed in shot.

RogueLeader said:

I’ve suggested ways to emphasize it even more, like having Palpatine’s voice sometimes be layered with multiple echoing voices. Like all the Sith are speaking through him.

So I have been playing with this idea for the past little while, trying to make it work. This is still rough, but I think it’s in a position that I can show it for feedback. I really wanted the “I am all the Sith” thing to lean into the “I am Legion” idea of the Sith literally possessing Palpatine’s body, so this is my attempt at conveying that. I’ve used Sade’s PHENOMENAL re-ordering of Palpatine’s dialogue, ending on “No match for the power in me”.

Now, I had seen people on here mention that the pregnant pause in dialogue in this cut was unfortunate, and some wishing that it ended on “You are nothing” so that it’s clear that Rey is responding to THAT specifically. So I let the Sith voices do the talking during that pause. Honestly, I’m pumped about how this is going, but I need everyone’s ears. Does this rule? Or does it suck?

Hmmm this is interesting, I’m still not 100% sold on the idea of all the sith essentially living in Palpatine, however if we do go down that route I think combining this https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/702816288342278207/845867790724235304/Sith_scream.mp4 with what you have here could be very cool.

This is really cool! Maybe I’m a little biased but I like it. It’s subtle, but adds to the moment. The echoing “nothing” whispers was a clever way to get that idea across with Rey, too.

It sort of makes me think of the way Palpatine’s voice is in this ROTS scene, when he knights Anakin as Darth Vader.

OMG OMG OMG!
*catches breath running along with this thread.

Yes, RL, amazing!!! Maybe I’m a little sentimental right now, but it’s frankly adorable. I agree that having a second shot would be nice, and that yes, cropping into a 4K clean plate would be the best option.

I did try frame interpolating in After Effects a while back to slow the shot down instead and found the results unsatisfactory. It is because of the dust, as DominicCobb said.

The source file given to me was 1080p so that’s what I worked with, but it’s a completely non-destructive AE file, meaning I should be able to simply swap in the 4K source sherlockpotter and turn on continuously rasterize in the precomps. When I can find time… MR I may take you up on that and send you my AE file! We can PM the details.

I don’t know if this will be useful at all to anyone, but here’s an SDR 4K Bluray source of the scene. It will need the new Ascendant LUTs applied, but hey, it’s here if you want it.

Thanks, Sherlockpotter. I’ve already got the full movie in .mkv but it’s the codec that screws everything up. If anyone knows how to convert to .mp4 without ruining everything please let me know. Handbrake doesn’t work and I’ve tried to use ffmpeg but really don’t wanna risk messing up my computer with more terminal stuff.

@Poppa, Thanks. Ignore half my last PM. You’ve already answered it. No rush.

@Axlanian, Being a surround sound freak this has really sparked my interest. It feels a little left side heavy in places but with some tweaking, I think this could work. I loved the “Nothing” additions to test Rey’s confidence.

Yeah, this was a very rough stereo mix. I’ll keep playing with it today, but if anyone wants to include this in their edit, I’ll happily provide isolated WAV stems of each Sith voice so they can be mixed to 5.1

Thanks for the compliments poppa! And thanks for providing that plate. If we could replace/upscale the plate to a 4K version, that would be great. I’ve been messaging MR as well so hopefully we can figure something out!

In the meantime, I think I’ll play around with retiming the scene to fit two shots .And then maybe see about extending the shot by 4 or 5 frames, just so we can squeeze as much out of this moment as possible!

(I’m pretty sure the general idea originally was suggested by someone else. I can’t remember who, but I don’t think I’m clever enough to have thought of this on my own.)

https://streamable.com/gnkec6

Lol, I love the proof of concept. Can we just put this into an edit?

I’m pretty sure I was the person, or one of the people, who suggested that idea. I would probably have one shot of Kylo and Luke just having a stand off, and then in the second shot Kylo takes a swing at Luke, who ducks below the stage, and immediately pops up behind him, making the children laugh. This would be fairly easy to do, if I had a Kylo puppet. It’d be much easier to time this than the timing of that damn fireball! But I think people at the time had some good arguments for why it should be the AT-AT vs Luke rather than Kylo vs Luke. If there was enough demand for it, and Faraday had time to design a Kylo puppet, I wouldn’t mind putting something together.

So this is yet another idea for the puppet scene, but imagine if we could put a puff of smoke or confetti popping out from behind the AT-AT after the fireball - that would really sell the comedy part for the kids methinks.

Next level cuteness! I like it 😃

https://vimeo.com/553993952

Hmm…I don’t know. Maybe it’s just because I’m used to the singular Palpatine voice, but I think it’s a little distracting to me, hearing the echoes on Papa Palpy’s voice.

And for the echoing “nothings” in the pause, it feels kind of…opposite to me? Like, okay, at this point, Rey is partway through her line “I am a Jedi.” The camera is doing a dramatic push in, the music score is rising up and crescendoing…to me, this pause is almost like Rey is “charging up” to unleash her final Jedi move on Palpatine. It’s a moment that should be building in hope and strength, not trying to tear Rey down more. So those “you’re nothing” whispers kind of work in opposition to what the scene seems to be trying to convey.

However, the idea of the whispers is interesting, and I almost wonder what it would be like if the Jedi were the ones whispering to Rey in this moment? “Hold firm.” “Strength in the Force.” “Mmm! Grab the second lightsaber, you must. Palpatine’s weakness, it is.” Hyping her up, lending her strength before the final push.

I say this all as someone who has no issues with the pause here. The score fills the moment just fine, for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
