They used the body double and have Mark Hamill re dub him.

This was a fun episode until the Rogue One garbage arrived, complete with needless lightsaber drooling and dead eye CGI de-aging. I guess they never really learned anything.

If you don’t drool over lightsabers, what do you drool for?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

Luke appearing to train Grogu doesn’t make sense within the story of this show? The appearance of pre-existing characters will technically always be fan-service to some degrees, but so far they’ve all added something to Din and Grogu’s story. Bo-Katan and Boba Fett allowed Din to see that there’s more than one way to be Mandalorian, and Ahsoka and now Luke adds to Grogu’s Jedi training story, while also staying true to canon. Luke was the most logical choice for the Jedi that heard Grogu’s call considering this takes place 5 years post-Endor, and when someone as important and popular as Luke returns you can hardly blame the filmmakers for making it exiting for the fans.

Luke appearing to train Grogu makes perfect sense.

And the change in the music style in this ep felt so wrong with some of it being more like a 90’s hallmark film

Yes. Of all the criticisms of this episode (some I agree with, some I don’t), the music struck me as being way off with respect to what was happening on screen. It was as if Göransson wasn’t involved. Very odd.

To the other points; I think it felt a bit rushed also. They could have left off last week with Mando discussing plans with Bo in the bar and them leaving as the last scene. Also, I don’t find the Cybermen terribly interesting or threatening.

The stuff with Luke being the one who answered the call, as well as his leaving with the baby - that all worked well for me.

I am LOVING Fett since his return. I’ve been waiting for this serious and three dimensional version of him since 1983.

Now that season 2 is over I stand by my prediction that The Mandalorian will be very similar to Rebels in its overall structure. I.e. we’ve now had the simple and mostly self-contained first season, and a cameo-filled second season with more characters and ties to the larger SW galaxy while still sticking to the main arc. Both shows also had a pretty big dramatic finale that shook things up a fair bit and planted the seeds for future plot-points. My guess is that season 3 will be much more story-focused while still being somewhat episodic and that season 4 (the final season) will mostly be one long story arc. Now that Din has the darksaber my guess is that the show will culminate in the retaking of Mandalore and that this will cross over with Ahsoka (who has a history with Mandalore and Bo-Katan) as probably as Rangers of the New Republic as well.

I feel like Mando removing the helmet would have been hyperspace lanes more impactful had we not see him do it in the last episode 😕

He took it off before because he HAD to. He took it off this time because he WANTED to.

I do wonder how they de-aged the voice though. I know how deepfakes and such work fairly well, but this is the first time I’ve heard a voice de-aged.

I’m wondering if they were able to use an advanced version of the unreleased Adobe Voco, or developed something similar. Hopefully we’ll find out in the BTS at Christmas

That’s my speculation as well!

So Bo Katan may not want to kill Mando but how about they hook up and she gets the darksaber via marriage and they’re off to re-establish the greater Mando culture as acting King/Queen (wahtever titles they use, I don’t follow the EU or the cartoons too closely).

Bo Katan scoffed at the helmet rule in her last appearance but here it seems she’s like the real cult loony.

Dank Farrik… now we have to wait until December 2021!

Also, I hate seeing people go on about the dodgy CGI on Luke Skywalker. You can always tell when a human being isn’t real or isn’t quite right, so the effects are noticeable, but it doesn’t invalidate how emotionally impactful that moment was. I don’t think we should let minor issues outweigh just how great this new content really is. I’m not saying The Mandalorian shouldn’t be criticised, but whenever I come to this thread it’s all so bloody negative, and ANY issue is brought to the very forefront of a review.

I’m certain ILM worked incredibly hard to get this effect, like they did with Tarkin, and that’s enough for me. Although I still think Sebastian Stan would have worked well, it’s a great thing that old Mark Hamill can still have a chance at playing young Luke Skywalker.

Honestly, the de-aged Mark Hamill look less and less weird the more I watch it. There are still some quirks here and there, though I’m wondering if a lot of the uncanny valley feeling might simply come from the fact that we all know Hamill does’t look like that anymore. There is something quite surreal about seeing a face we recognize from grainy 80’s film footage now appearing in this crisp digital footage alongside actors from this obviously new series. The more I look at it I’m sure its some kind of deepfake as it looks to good to be CG, especially considering its a TV series. The over-the-shoulder shots I do think is CG, but everything else looks like its based on ROTJ footage and probably blended with the face of a lookalike. The first time he speaks the lip movement seems quite natural to me, but the second time it seems a bit too little compared to the words coming out of his mouth. There is also a shot where he bends down to pick up Grogu where there is some slightly odd blurring and I wonder if the original actors face might have become more visible. Overall though, I think this has great potential for Luke showing up again in later season and other series as I’m sure this technology will only get better. And I definitely think this scene will grow on people more than Tarkin and RO Leia has (and the former I think works quite well overall with only the lip animation being the biggest issue).

Would they want to release it at the same time as The Book of Boba Fett? I’m thinking they’ll stagger them more, so it could be earlier or… longer.

This did occur to me, but apparently it’s been confirmed as Christmas 2021. Unless we get The Book of Boba Fett in December and season 3 releases just after Boxing Day or something, but that sounds unlikely to me.

I’ll post a proper review later, but for now… did anyone else think Pedro looked different in this episode? I know he was emotional, but I don’t think it was just that. Also it’s so strange seeing him in a wider shot with the helmet off because it looks like he has a really small head!

Was this the series finale? It felt like the resolution of the entire story.

I have to keep telling myself, “Gideon’s alive, Mando is owner of the darksaber, he and Grogu will see each other again” because although we’re just getting started in some respects, this episode FELT like the series ended.

It was definitely a resolution to Grogu’s story, though there’s still potential stories to be told I think. I wouldn’t say Din’s story is over though. His quest is over, but there’s still a lot for him to learn about what it truly means to be a Mandalorian. And now that he has the darksaber he could use it to unite the Mandalorians. Gideon’s still alive and a potential threat to Grogu, so is Thrawn and the Imperial Remnants in general. And Bo-Katan could become an adversary as well in the next season.

And I think they should know by now to stop burning money on this stuff that always fails and has to be fixed by amateur deep fake people online. Mark Hamill can still have the role, but when it’s so prohibitive (to the budget and the performance) they need to do it another way. Give him a beard, do practical makeup, do something else. It’s gonna age like milk. Evidently people haven’t complained enough.

Hmm… The cgi / de-aging could simply be a one off, perhaps a measure used to avoid leaking out the big secret.

Now that we all know Luke’s in the mix, and that he’ll likely have a large presence in future live action, they could easily resort to Sebastian Stan or the like and use prosthetic makeup and practical magic. I can see this also being done for Alden Ehrenreich and a possible new Leia.

It could be that “Rangers of the New Republic” follows Luke, the jedi and how they fit in with the Republic. It would also be a golden opportunity at showing the inner workings of the new senate with Leia and the republic fleet with General Solo.

But I digress.

seeing Luke was a pleasant surprise ,though given all of the other characters added from The Clone Wars and Rebels this season ,I am a little surprised they went there this soon . I kept thinking the Darktroopers at the door to the bridge pounding on the door to the bridge was going to end it on a cliffhanger .Luke looked pretty good to me overall ,but I think they could have done a bit better . I think it was the outer edges of his hair and the shadows on his tunic that needed work the most .If they had went a lot darker with the background behind him ,I think it would have blended in better . And looking at where his hood meets his tunic when it is down , the shadows are a too black …there is light in shadows and reflective light on clothing . So ,put some light in the dark on the figure ,and some dark in the light and blend him into the background more ,and it would have been more seamless. They had already established the room on the destroyer that he was in ,so they had to go with that it seems .Still , I was able to look past all this and enjoy it ,and I do believe the technology will only get better . Now lets see some Legends movies outside the main continuity please. Marvel is doing a What If series ,so it seems feasible to me to have an alternate continuity with a branding “Legends” that already exists outside the main continuity in books etc . I would rather see them do this than the world between worlds angle .
