The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released) — Page 22

Just came in, congrats Hal, great work. Catch me up though, what’s the master source here? The new Blus?

Have you ever considered going back and redoing ANH and ESB with the D+ versions? It’d be nice for consistency with Jedi, though I understand not doing it.

The problem is that both make use of quite a bit of work that was done on the 2011 masters. (Clips from Revisited, DeEd, FX done for this project, etc.) Those clips would have to be adjusted to fit with the new masters. It’d just have to be a whole new project, and there’d been to much already done. See what Ridley did with the Falcon scene in ANH, for one thing.

As long as all three feel consistent enough, I’m happy with them as the SE option when I wand that. And I love what’s being done to restore the OOT from these new masters when I prefer to watch that.

I can’t say much, as this is in the earliest possible phase, but I intend to revamp these so that all three films are primarily sourced from the 19SE.

For ANH and ESB, especially the former, there will be a few things that could be a little tricky to adapt from the work done using the 2011 BluRay source. But I think none of these will be showstoppers.

While on the subject, let me ask: would anyone like to remove Yavin IV from the SE shot of the rebel force heading to the Death Star?

Seeing as to how much that issue has been discussed lately since doubleofive brought it up, I’m willing to bet Adywan is gonna want to tackle it in ANH Revisited eventually.

Really, the only things that need to be done to perfect the 2020 Blu-ray discs is to re-color them to match the original colors, ever so slightly (Adywan did some great work on Return of the Jedi), and add some film grain to the video. Also, going back to these once Adywan’s HD version of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi are out and do some nice changes/additions would be nice too, whenever those come out.

Why remove Yavin IV though?

It is in clear firing range of the Death Star in the SE shot.

I don’t suppose anyone’s recreated the OOT two opening fighters shots using CGI? People like to do mock-ups with digital models, so I’m sure this has been done. The question is whether if it’s been done in a way that blends in well with the 97SE’s Yavin and fighters.

Shoutout to OhTeeDee for providing source material for this. Similar to working on ANH using Harmy’s De- and Re-Specialized editions, this makes it a lot easier.

For ROTJ, which I’ll revise first, it makes it practically a no-brained. I don’t mind overwriting work already done in pursuit of a better end result. So, thanks, OhTeeDee.

Thanks for doing this, and to Oohteedee for D+77-80/OTD83. I was never fond of the 04/11 transfers.

OP updated to reflect an update to ROTJ, essentially remastering it to use OhTeeDee’s color corrected 19SE and OTD83 projects. To me, these two sources make the OOT and SE material blend together more seamlessly than I have ever seen before. I am very satisfied with this presentation of ROTJ, and thank OhTeeDee again for his help in providing such awesome source material. And of course to those behind 4K83, and SkyDude, who made even that possible. I will similarly update ANH and ESB in time.

Ah, shit! Well, I’ll go in and fix that typo in the readme files.

And yeah, this will replace the old versions. I removed the old ones from the Drive and the new ones will trickle up as they are finished encoding. So whatever you see there is of the new one.

Hal, I apologize if this has already been asked. However, I was wondering you would consider a version w/ Hayden’s Anakin at the end. I am surprised I am asking this as I adore the Shaw version of the character at the end and was actually mad when Hayden replaced him in later versions of ROTJ. That being said, you and Jonh did such a nice job of adding in Hayden at the end of TROS in your fanedit of that film I want to be able to watch both these edits and see Hayden all the way through. I think is would be beneficial watching this as a collective saga. Let me know what you think. Thanks for all your hard work!
