The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 290

Just watched it. It’s a big improvement, it now at least works as a crowd pleaser type film. In particular The force ghosts and the chatter on the comms and the “for Skywalker!” shouts actually had the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Previously these moments had me just shrug and rey’s delivery of “all of the jedi” actually made me roll my eyes in the cinema.

It’s still a subpar film but I don’t mean that to be disrespectful to the efforts of Hal and the other contributors on here. They’ve turned the worst star wars film into something watchable and as mentioned above, occasionally quite effective. So for that alone it’s a big thumbs up from me. Thank You.

Thanks, I’m really glad this is being enjoyed.

And thanks, Muffy, for typing out those instructions. I just added that to the FAQ.

And yeah… you answered your own question. Lol

Great work and congratulations for the release!

I’m downloading it just to hear Hal’s commentary and thoughts about the movie xD

For those interested in the Nobody version, in the Nobody thread RogueLeader posted the scenes that must be changed for that version:

RogueLeader said:

Potential Scenes that Must Be Changed for a Rey Nobody Edit

I’m going to point out all scenes that are also related to new info regarding her parents. Some Rey Nobody edits will want to cut as much out about her parents as possible, while others will just reinterpret that information.

Potential cut - Kylo and Palpatine’s first scene. “She is not who you think she is.” (This line could be given a new context though.)

Parent scene - Rey gets a vision where we get a quick glimpse of her parents and Ochi’s ship flying away.

Parent scene - On Pasana, Rey sees Ochi’s ship and says something is familiar about it.

Parent scene - Rey picks up the dagger and senses bad things have happened with that blade. She hears her mother’s screams. (This could be kept as-is without the other references to her parents.)

Special Mention - Although Rey using Force lightning is meant to be an obvious connection to Palpatine, without the other related connections, this can simply be seen as a manifestation of her dark side abilities.

Parent scene - While waiting for 3PO to reboot on Kijimi, Rey tells Finn that she recognized Ochi’s ship.

Parent scene - During Rey and Kylo’s Force bond duel, Kylo tells Rey that Palpatine killed her parents because they were trying to hide Rey from him.

Rey Palpatine Scene - Kylo tells Rey that she is Palpatine’s granddaughter. (NECESSARY CUT)

Parent scene - After they escape, Rey says, “He killed my mother, and my father. I’m going to find Palpatine, and kill him.”

Parent scene - Back at the Resistance base, Finn tells Poe that D-O’s former mission was to bring a little girl on Jakku to the Emperor.

Rey Palpatine Scene - On Ahch-To, Luke says to Rey, “Because you’re a Palpatine.” (NECESSARY CUT)

Rey Palpatine/Parent Scene - When Rey confronts Palpatine, he has multiple lines related to their connection (NECESSARY CUTS)
“Long have I waited… for my grandchild to come home.”
“I never wanted you dead, I wanted you here, Empress Palpatine.”
“It is your birthright to rule. It is in your blood, our blood.”
“Weak. Like your parents.” Rey responds, “No. My parents were strong.” (Would need to be cut if you were to remove her parents being murdered by Ochi)
“Your master, Luke Skywalker, was saved by his father. The only family you have here is me.”
Later, as Rey is about to kill Palpatine, he says, “She will take her revenge”. (This line would need to be cut an editor was going to remove Rey’s parents being murdered by Ochi.)

This is all I can think of without going back and watching the movie.

If anyone would like to type out the directions that YouTube clip (which I haven’t looked at), I can add it to the FAQ on the Drive sooner.

  1. Log into your Google Drive account

  2. Right click the FOLDER in which your preferred movie file resides within Google Drive:
e.g. The Rise Of Skywalker - Ascendant 1080p (FOLDER not file)

  3. Choose download from the drop down menu which starts the zip process that should take
around a few hours to complete by which point you’ll be asked to save the file to your desired location.

For me in Chrome it was a single left click not right click but there was no drop down menu and it went straight to the zip process.

How far did kewlfish get exactly? Might be less daunting for someone to take up the mantle if they could see there aren’t many outstanding scenes.

He never sent me any final renders, just clips to preview. 😕
If he ever surfaces to send what he has completed, though, I believe it was through the fight in Kylo’s bedroom.

^ That’s what I remember as well.

I really hope it can get done, I’d be willing to help in any way if possible as it’s the most important edit to me

Honestly I would be willing to try and take up the task if I could figure out what effect or plug-in he used for the saber effect. I would probably have to start from scratch and just find a similar effect.

I’d be thrilled to see it if you did! 😄

Going back to look at what all kewlfish did, he had already made so much progress. Hopefully he pops back up sooner rather than later! But either way, the idea won’t be scrapped.

Author

That’s what I was thinking too. The only problem is that I, or someone else, might have trouble matching the effect kewlfish used if we can’t find the same, or a similar, plugin.

I’d certainly welcome that, and agree it was the biggest opportunity left on the table for V1. I suppose if, working backward, you reached the point kewlfish left off, by that point it may not be so troublesome to finish the rest of the footage.

But, hey, that’s easy for me to say.

Also just finished it. Finally a watchable movie concluding a watchable trilogy. Congrats to you Hal for that, you change the way I will be viewing Star Wars in the forseeable future (this includes your edits for the prequels).

There were some things that pulled my attention and ideas that I wanted to share with you:

In the beginning during Rey’s training run there is a wide shot where she runs across a tree/bridge/something Already with her lightsaber ignited, while a few shots later she (re) ignites it, I don’t know if this is a mistake or not?

In your notes you say you extended the desert scene with Kylo’s Tie fighter. Too be honest it felt kind of stretched, it feels like it could be trimmed just a bit.

Maybe it’s my version or my tv but Kylo’s saber looked very orange during the duel with Rey outside of the Death Star.

I had goosebumps during the ‘all the Jedi’ sequence! (also loved Lei’s purple saber!), I just thought that during the final seconds of the force ghosts helping Rey there should be way more jedi force ghosts behind the four main one, emphasizing ALL the jedi, maybe with known jedi (like the old council) or just cloacked force ghosts. The four main ones (loved Alex Guinness btw) should still get the spotlight, just some more in the final moments.

Again, fantastic work!

Anyone else noticing Google Drive working…odd…after updating the latest version of Chrome?
I copied this file last night to my google drive and today, at work, could stream the mp3 I have on google drive.
Came home, could not stream or download ANYTHING. Error messages and dead ends left and right.

Log in to my Google Drive via microsoft edge and can stream and download at will. Really, really weird.

Thanks for the continuing feedback. You all did a wonderful job on this, and it has been fulfilling to see this come together.

And I’m glad my commentary track is being enjoyed, even if I find it annoying to listen to! I sound like I was woken to record it at 2:47AM.

CONGRATULATIONS HAL! I feel so humbled to have my name on that list. I will be downloading it and NOMATTER WHAT I believe this is the version I will show anyone and everyone I know for years to come.

It brings a smile to my face knowing I can now barge in on conversations with a simple trump card phrase “BUUUT you haven’t seen the right version of ROS 😉”.

May the force be with you all!

This is the way.

Last night I wanted to watch a few scenes and ended up watching the whole movie. Fell asleep at 4 AM lol. That says a lot! This is so much better than the original film, you have really made an outstanding job HAL. Congratulations! This edit is how I’ll watch this movie from now on

TROS was my least favorite SW movie on release. It wasn’t that it was horrendously unwatchable. The problem was that TROS was so bland and unremarkable for what should’ve been a momentous movie. This edit definitely does a lot of work in order to add that celebratory feeling and make the movie a bit more cohesive in the process. I enjoyed watching something that I had no interest in rewatching. One small change that had a surprisingly major effect were the “for skywalker” cries. The only time the original movie really mentions the mythic finale of TLJ (the best scene of the ST imo), it completely negate the impact of that scene (“crait didn’t inspire anything”). This fixes that. The force ghosts and the restructuring of the opening scenes are also great touches. Great job.

FYI, the top two posts on Reddit - Fanedits are both about Ascendant. You said, “Sorry, I accidentally deleted the first post.” Apparently not.

It’s been a while since I’ve looked at this thread, I was able to watch V1 of the project and wow, It was really good and just such a vast improvement of the theatrical version. I cannot wait to burn this onto my own blu-ray to have it on my shelf. Thanks Hal for all the time you’ve put into creating this for everyone! This episode 9 edit along with your TFA and prequel edits are my definitive versions of those movies.

Well done,

An all around solid edit compiled by a passionate community of artists, including of course yourself, Hal. I’ll be keeping this in my collection and showing it to friends for a long time. The fact that Disney didn’t make some of these choices for the 3rd act themselves is beyond absurd to me, but it delivers everything I wanted to see in the film at least.

At this point, my only issue is what happens if Disney FINALLY releases some high quality deleted scenes. I was originally planning to do an Episode IX edit if they did, but at this point there isn’t much else I can do that your edit here hasn’t already done, and there’s no guarantee we’ll ever see unreleased footage for this film now, just like with Rogue One. It is what it is.

Congratulations on the completion of this project.
