People seem to go back and forth on how (or if) Fett is alive and will be in the series. I’m not up on most EU or any Lucas SE whatever-the-fucks. Is there any real reason to assume he lived beyond ROTJ?

Yeah, the cameo character at the end of the episode was played by Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Episode 2. In case you’ve cleansed the prequels from your mind: Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett…

I only saw Phantom once (in ‘99). I never bothered with the other prequels. I’m unfamiliar with the story or the actor Morrison. I didn’t know who that was at the end of the episode.

I respect your avoidance of the prequels - if you didn’t like The Phantom Menace, chances are the other two would disappoint you just as much as expected. But I recommend reading into the general story, because in my opinion the broad strokes of it are fantastic. Even though I think he missed the mark with writing and directing the prequels, I have huge respect for George Lucas as an ideas man.

I honestly really admire how new canon content like Rogue One and The Mandalorian is trying to bridge the massive divide between the originals and the prequel era. Both are totally “old-school Star Wars”, aesthetically and otherwise, but there are things that connect to other parts of the timeline and small things for prequel fans too.

I’m still so happy we saw weathered, realistic CGI pit droids existing on Tatooine, and it was a particular pleasure to see super battle droids existing in a realistic environment in Season 1. Other than the awful dialogue, my least favourite thing about the prequels is how clinical and plastic everything feels, so having Prequel-era designs displayed with 2020 CGI in real grungy sets is great.

I feel exactly the same about that

Agreed with this. It’s great how the prequel stuff fits in the “used future” aesthetic of the originals. Actually I’d love if any of the TV shows dares to take on Coruscant or any other urban planets but with a classical OT-like feel.

Chapter 10 was a pretty solid episode. Not what I had expected after the Fett reveal last episode, but I suppose they’re saving that for a later episode or season. I do, however, like how they seem to be connecting these smaller adventures. Season 1 did the more conventional thing of just having them arrive at a new place in each episode, implying that much/some time had passed in-between, but now it seems like they’ll all be connected in some small way. If so, then I think its a really good idea. It allows for an “adventure of the week” type of narrative while still making it all feel like one long story.

I like that it’s simple storytelling, without a profusion of characters and multiple storylines that in other series can be confusing to follow.

Hope that it don’t turn to… (SPOILERS AHEAD)

beast of the week episodes !

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Am I the only person that gets a bit of a Al Williamson-vibe from the design of the “Frog-Lady”? The creature design reminds me of the Chubbits from the SW Newspaper comic.

I also think its a nice little detail that both the “Frog-Lady” and “Dr. Mandible” (as Peli called him) both appeared in the season 1 Tatooine episode, implying that there’s not much happening on Tatooine anymore. Moroff from Rogue One, or at least someone from the same species, also popped up in the new cantina scene.

There’s a mantis looking creature in the Original cantina scene. Is that supposed to be the same character or just the same species?

I think Frog Lady looks a lot like another creature from the Special Edition of the cantina scene. That could be her husband before he went to Trask and made a place for them.

It’s definitely a reference to that, but they look quite different, so unless they’ve retconned/updated the design I think they’re meant to be separate species. The new one definitely looks more Star Wars-y.

You mean this guy? https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Melas
Funnily enough, I think he actually look even more similar to the Chubbits.

I just chalked it up to being improved creature effects, but they could be different species I suppose. Maybe he molted a few times? lol

Great name too, Doctor Mandible. lol

Although it’s nice for background characters to have proper EU names, I do think there’s a certain charm to the old alien nicknames from the 70’s/80’s like yakface, hammerhead, etc. so I do think it’s funny how, for now at least, we have a frog-lady and Dr. Mandible. Though I guess the last one might be canon? At least its an in-universe nickname.

I just realized that the director of Ant-Man had an actual ant man make an appearance in this episode.

Weird. Chapter 10 really seemed to be a cost cutting episode as far as aliens go. The cantina aliens and the droid from Chapter 5 were re-used (incl. the Frog Lady). And there’s Moroff from RO + the TFA alien shown above. I can’t imagine season 2 having anything but a bigger budget than season 1 though, so I wonder why this is the case. Maybe the episode was rewritten at a late stage or something like that? Or I guess they might just have really wanted to reuse costumes and MU effect elements and we’ll see even more familiar modern era aliens in future episodes. Not that I’m complaining, these are all great designs, I just find it fascinating.

I think they just like have tiny connections like these, for people like me who enjoy that kind of stuff. It’s not important to the story and if someone didn’t notice it, they wouldn’t be missing anything really, but it’s fun for the people who do notice.

A little disappointed with Chapter 10, and not because Boba Fett wasn’t in it as I was fully expecting. I felt it suffered from slow parts and, like the Razor Crest into a cave of angry ice spiders, the overall season story takes a bit of a nosedive. The relationship of Mando and Baby Yoda was developed, and I like the story of two parents doing whatever it takes to protect their children, but I don’t think you need a meandering episode to make character development happen. ‘Filler’ doesn’t have to be a bad thing, not even in an 8-episode season where every new chapter is precious, so I’m trying to figure out why this one didn’t quite hit it for me.

The extended sequence where Mando and frog lady are chased into the Razor Crest by the spider swarm was very good - or very good as in nervewracking, because of how they just keep coming. Me being an arachnophobe didn’t help. The scene where baby yoda walks among the eggs and the sweet music is playing, I was just thinking “oh god, I’ve seen Rebels and I’ve seen Alien… I know how this ends!”

‘The Passenger’ is just so different from Chapter 9 that I think I need to rewatch it in the context of the whole season. After all, chapter 2 could also be classified as ‘filler’ and I love that episode. I think I just hyped myself up for a planet like Ilum so much, or what I thought Mando entering the cave and the frog creature from the trailers was all about, that I ruined it for myself a bit. I just hope there are no more episodes like this which feel like they suddenly divert the story somewhere else.

I take that wording back after remembering that all The Mandalorian has been so far is Mando on a very important quest but he keeps getting sidetracked almost every episode. So it’s not that either. I think it’s maybe the sense that not all that much happens within the usual 40 minute runtime. But I’m overstating my issues with this episode, it’s still an enjoyable and only slightly terrifying space adventure.
