Help: looking for... Original Trilogy preservation project w/ German audio?

Anyone ever thought about about doing a laser disc to DVD transfer of the german versions? Normally I don’t care about dubbed versions, but in this case I make an exception:

1. This is how I remember the movies as I first saw them at the cinema
1b which is the whole point of the preservation efforts, isn’t it?
2. The english original was mostly redubbed in post anyway
2a As I understand it this is one rare case of the original creators supervising the dubbed version.

And as I’m here:

Is the original “Making Of” of Star Wars (Ep IV) still available somewhere? It aired on TV in 1977/1978 and was available on VHS casettes in the 80s.

I believe I recieved a copy of the German sounddtrack from Sountrackmaster, so I would just add it to the existing transfer.

Sweet Hope that works. Are there no problems with timing (PAL-Versions speed up) and are the movie edits exactly the same, framewise?

And what do you mean by "the existing transfer"? As there are so many out now Do you still have your own project or are you now participating in X0?

I've been asked if I could do a version with the French audio, and here was me thinking once I've finished my 3 trilogy versions that would be the end of it
Because I have the French & German dubbed laserdiscs I might, after I've finished my main trilogy, do a PAL set with English, French & German audio tracks, not sure I'd do the subtitles because I don't speak French or German and would probably screw them up.

Don't know if I could be of any help with the german subs? But me personally don't care for them. Could be interesting for hearing impaired.

Does anyone have the german title card/opening crawl (preferably sans "Episode IV") and would it be possible to author it in? I think in cinemas back then we even had german credits. ... there have to be some 16mm prints floating around somewhere ...

I guess that is more than I can ask for Is it possible (I don't know much about DVD-authoring) to put the opening crawl in some kind of chapter where you could choose which version you want to watch with the film?

I was thinking about this kind of project as well... actually I was planning on picking the best parts out of the several sets out there.

The video would be taken from Mother's PAL sets (after all a German set has to be in PAL, and Mother's sets are the best, qualitywise, hands down). Furthermore I'd like to include both German and English audio-tracks, an isolated score track (which set were they on again? I only have it on the "Star Wars Classic Edition"), several audio-commentary tracks (the one on "Classic Edition" is a pretty nice edit from several interviews) and maybe different angles for both German and English opening cards and crawls. All this stuff would of course justify a dual-layer disc per film, but as DL-discs are getting cheaper, this wouldn't be a problem I guess.

Audiowise I encountered a problem though... as a start I checked if the audio from my rip of the German THX-LDs does sync up with Mother's set, and it doesn't! So, where would I get a German audio track that does? I wouldn't mind editing them in Premiere to match up, but I am low on HD-space right now.

Of course it doesn't sync up, the actors are speaking English!!!

Seriously though, it should not be too hard (lip sync excepted ) to get the audio from your German LD rips compatible with the video from my DVDs. Firstly, did you capture a video stream as well, and is the audio locked to that video? If not, you need to re-rip the LDs. If you're low on HD space, capture the video at a lower resolution (e.g. 352x288) and compress using the MJPEG codec.

Then you need to have 2 instances of VirtualDubMod open, in the first, load up the M2V ripped from my DVD, the second, load up the AVI containing your LD capture (or an AVS script if you so prefer). Then it's just a case of comparing the two, ensuring your AVI's length matches up exactly with the MPEG-2 video stream. You may have to cut a frame or two from certain scenes, or repeat frames as necessary. As long as the edits are limited to only a few frames, the effect on the audio will not be noticeable.

Once you have the lengths matched exactly, just save out the audio from your AVI as a WAV. You can then encode to AC3, multiplex, etc...
