I like the idea but it could be awkward to insert him into a single-shot flashback.

Would only work as something rotoscoped out of ROTJ I’d imagine, intention would only be he’s just watching them train. Doesn’t matter, just something I’d like to see if done well.

If we’re back on the topic of music, there’s a bit of DotF at the start and end that are very quiet and subtle. Maybe those could go somewhere?

I know a good source, actually, let’s talk about it more in the main thread.

Throwing in another random comment after re-re-re-watching the latest workprint.

After our heroes leave Pasaana, there is a clip of some TIE fighters towing the Falcon onto the star destroyer. In this fanedit, you’ve removed the rest of the clip (revealing Chewie is still alive) and replaced it with the brief scene of Kylo Ren having a telepathic convo with Palpatine. This is a great change because it keeps the Chewbacca reveal a secret AND it shows us that the Falcon ends up on the star destroyer (important for our heroes to escape later).

That said, I’d like to suggest moving the Kylo Ren/Palpatine scene just a little later: to right after watching our heroes’ ship fly off to reveal they’re being followed by the Knights of Ren. Here’s what this does:

  1. Help slow down the pacing. Have the sequence go from Rey and Finn talking about her having accidentally killed Chewie and right into Poe asking what their plan is. This lengthens the scene and helps make it not feel so choppy.

  2. In the Kylo Ren/Palpatine sequence, Kylo Ren tells Palpatine that he knows where Rey is going. The problem is, with the scene positioned where it is currently, how does he know where she is going? In fact, in a later scene, General Pryde and Hux approach him and tell him they’ve found Rey, even though, by the current logic, he should have already known this.

So by moving the Kylo Ren/Palpatine scene right AFTER the shot of our heroes being tailed, it makes more sense that Kylo Ren can tell Palpatine he knows where they’re going because we now know they’re being followed.

Here’s my take of the entire sequence: https://vimeo.com/459833058/4afd0d3b9e

Notes:

  • This was a very quick edit job, so it still needs some work.
  • The audio also needs work, but that’s doable.
  • The clip of Poe pressing buttons was taken from Pasaana as he prepares to fire up the ship. Added color correction to match the clips that follow.

Also, one thing that really bugs me is when our heroes say, “For Chewie,” they hold hands, and then C-3P0 comes over and says nothing.

So you’ll notice in my take I have him saying “oh Chewbacca,” from Return of the Jedi, and plugged it into his awkward silence when they hold hands. I think it feels SO much better with him acknowledging his friend that he’s known since A New Hope.

I kinda liked 3PO not saying anything. It was cute and awkward in a C-3PO way the way it played out.

Hmm, wonder if I’m in the minority then.

It just seemed pretty out of character for C-3P0 who is always looking for a chance to talk, and discusses friendship a lot more this film.

I think him saying it—in the last Star Wars movie, especially—is actually kind of heartwarming.

But I’m okay being outvoted on that.

Is there an alternate source for a similar line? Maybe from the radio drama?

I have to wait until I can sit and think a minute but I think I like your proposed restructure of those scenes!

One tiny thing, and I’m sure this won’t end up mattering, is that Poe says they have 8 hours, which is currently removed in this cut. I like the transition to him hitting switches, so as long as it feels valid without having that line.

Also, who has a good pre-hyperspace jump sound for the ice wall moment? I haven’t found the right one yet.

There’s a smorgasbord of Falcon sounds in this Battlefront 2 cinematic at 2:26.

https://youtu.be/gRiGUcUQwEY?t=145

Not a lot of music to muddy it (other than the last second of the sub-light drive kicking in or so), maybe something there’s workable if layered with the rest of the sound in that moment? It’s tough to find isolated cockpit interior effects without a ton of the soundtrack mixed in. (Hopefully there are better options out there!)

Any sounds on pond5 that works? If there is a sound that works I’ll purchase it.

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic but I know a few others here were interested. I’ve worked for awhile on continuing to add the final TROS trailer’s music into the movie:

https://vimeo.com/459982104

It’s still a bit rough when the music goes in and out since I can’t find a way to gradually increase or decrease it, so I have to cut the ends into numerous quarter-second chunks that quickly increase or decrease in volume, leaving the audio somewhat clippy/chunky.

However, the music placement and transitions are improved and I made custom sound effects to replace the original rocks crumbling and explosions (I had to keep the blaster fire for a second though which sounds slightly odd with a pinch of the original music peaking through… I might just cut this part out). I’ll still try to improve it anyway I can but this is good enough for me now to add as audio on my own into the final edit when it’s complete 😃

I like what you’ve done, but man it’s weird to have uplifting music while seeing people get vaporized.

But I guess that’s every adventure/fantasy/war movie.

its feel super off, doesn’t really match the rest of Williams’ TROS score, especially considering he didn’t do the trailer music

I’m glad you like the idea. I do think shifting that sequence around helps the pacing considerably. For the C-3P0 bit, I’ll see if I can find another line, but his saying “Chewbacca” from ROTJ was the first that came to mind.

The sound effect that I think works really well is this one, when Artoo fixes the hyperdrive in ESB. I’ll try to see if I can pull the sound without the music, maybe out of the surround sound mix.

Thanks! If I get to it before you, which is unlikely, I’ll try to get the sound from that moment in ESB.

I think any more discussion about trailer music belongs in the general TROS ideas thread. It’s just not gonna happen in this project.

Okay, Ziggy, the logic and pacing work well. Makes sense to see the heroes decide where to go and take off before hearing Kylo say he knows their destination.

Your mock-up involves reusing a shot from earlier of Poe messing with switches. It’d either have to be reused or cut from the earlier scene. I have replaced my proxy ProRes source file with the full size, making further editing painfully slow and tedious, so I wasn’t able to do much at all tonight.

Even as I type, I had to skim through the film to remind myself that the Kylo-Palpatine conversation had been moved from heading to Endor. And it introduced a continuity error I don’t believe anyone picked up on until you did.

Perhaps the simplest fix would be to replace or remove the line, “I know where she’s going.”

But that’s still true, isn’t it? Now, it refers to the Knights of Ren tracking them through hyperspace. I actually thought that was a really clever way to repurpose that line.

Who added the Ice planet over the Endor scene?

Would they be interested in doing coruscant.

Since he is helmeted during that scene, it does give some wiggle room. If possible to splice some lines, he could say something "My Knights are tracking them/her|My Knights will know| etc.

I thought he meant it could be added to the briefing scene since he was able to add that there.
It was Poppasketti.

And there is a continuity error in the current workprint, because the KoR aren’t shown to follow the heroes, and they aren’t shown to have left yet, before Kylo speaks with Palpatine. If anyone has good helmeted Kylo dialogue, I can see if it would fit in there. Or, maybe it’d be fine to just have:

“Don’t betray me, blah blah, or I’ll turn my fleet against you.”

“She’ll never be a Jedi.”

“Make sure of it. Kill her.”

Any lego Kylo stuff maybe to draw from?
