Hal’s Rogue One edit (a half-assed version of DigMod’s) (Released)

Rogue One changes (Hal9000)

This is Version 4 of this project.

(The only difference between versions 3 and 4 is to take advantage of Burbin revising his work on compositing Shamook’s deepfaked footage of Tarkin and Leia to take advantage of superior source material provided by Shamook.)

I love Rogue One. It’s honestly the most visceral fun I’ve had in the theater in the past few years. It was the first Star Wars film not to have me feel apprehensive, being the first spinoff film. It was ‘extra credit,’ and so I felt free to enjoy the good and not be bothered by parts that didn’t work as well. This edit is in recognition that a few tweaks would help the film, though.

This fan edit is largely a diet version of DigModification’s own Rogue One fan edit. But, since I made it for myself, may as well share it in case it would hit the spot for anyone else.

5.1 DTS audio (thanks to ChainsawAsh)
5.1 640kbps AC3 audio
English, Spanish, and French subtitles (Spanish provided by Burbin)
Chapter stops

(No title crawl has been contrived, location labels have been left alone, and no feathered wipe transitions have been employed.)

  • Used opening logos and title cards from The Last Jedi, replacing zoomed out versions used originally.
  • Used deepfake work of pioneering YouTubers to enhance the visual FX for Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia’s apperances (OriginalTrilogy.com user Burbin has stitched together workable source material for this, drawing from the work of YouTube deepfake ‘practitioner’ Shamook.)
  • Borrowed a shot TM2YC modified to offset a shot that centered on a glass of blue milk.
  • Removed introductory scenes to Cassian and Bobdi. We cut from Jyn in prison to the jailbreak. We then meet the other main characters as she does. (Wobani label moved to establishing shot of transport)
  • Removed showing the audience Cassian’s instructions to kill Galen Erso. By removing this conversation as well as its reiteration in a later scene, it adds weight to Jyn’s comment about trust going both ways and keeps the audience in Jyn’s perspective.
  • Removed other Bohdi scenes until the band of heroes meet him in the dungeon of Saw Gerrera.
  • Removed a line from Cassian en route to Jedha that felt out of place (thanks to DigModification for audio)
  • Muted a line from K2 to let silence make for better humor.
  • Removed announcement on Jedha about the missing cargo pilot.
  • Removed the cringe-inducing cameo from Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba.
  • Removed a cutaway to Jyn and Cassian to show Baze mowing down troopers in one unbroken shot.
  • As Krennic prepares to execute the scientists, removed line, “Fire!”
  • Trimmed Bohdi’s hesitation in assigning the new makeshift crew a callsign when pulling away from the Rebel base.
  • Removed a redundant line as Jyn notes they are trapped on the surface of Scarif.
  • Modified R2-D2’s red/blue light to match its style of appearance in ANH (FX by Burbin)
  • Removed Jyn’s line to Krennic, “You know who I am,” as he appeared sincerely not to.

We need a blu ray cover with “Hal’s Rogue One edit (a half-assed version of DigMod’s)” in the title! Maybe with an image of half an ass 😃

Could I please have a link to acquire this? (I have the Rogue One official release on blu ray)

looks at Hal’s cutlist

it’s exactly the same as what I’d planned to do eventually

Well, that’s one thing checked off my list! Looking forward to checking it out.

I love this, it is my go to version of RO, as are all your other edits. Thank you!

This is a thought I’ve been toying with; I know this is just a side project of yours, so maybe I’ll try it on my own. However, I would be interested in how the movie works without showing vader until the final scene (only including the mention of him coming). It isn’t his story, and his mustafar scene detracts more than adds to his character, for a few reasons. I think only showing the hallway scene develops his mystique and character more.

Check out TM2YC’s edit, he attempts a version of this. Truth be told a hybrid of Hal’s edit (in which he mainly took ideas from DigMod) and TM2YC’s would probably be my go-to for this movie.

Perfect I will! I agree, seems like a mix is ideal, especially since most of TM2YC changes and DigMods Seem to go too far to match the OT, and the movie overall only benefits a few scenes removed. The only crawl I’d use is the original teaser.

Go for it! There’s certainly something to be said for the idea. But, I like the connective tissue that showing Mustafar provides the saga.
If anything, I’d be interested in seeing an ending in which the Taitive receives the transmissions on the periphery of the battle and jumps, piquing Vader’s interest as he orders a boarding party and jumps after them.

Would it be worth updating the end for this?

Wow, I’m actually surprised how much better that looks. Deepfakes have come a long way…

Yes, they certainly have. While previous versions of this did not do it for me, this is an overall improvement compared to the original. She still looks slightly artificial, though. Her stare is too fixated and while her voice says “hope”, her mouth seems to have doubts about that. Personally I’d try to show as little of Leia’s face as possible and cut away just before her mouth starts moving (or maybe even before her face is shown) and have her voice play over the cockpit shot. The same goes for Tarkin: the less we see his face directly (reflections are okay), the better, imo.

I put that toghether just to see how it would look like. The video on YouTube has almost every shot of Tarkin in the movie. You could try contacting Shamook to see if they have the rest of the footage/source quality files, they have their email on the about page of their YT channel & says they’re open for collaboration, might have better luck than with derpfakes. And judging by the description on their video they might appreciate to have a version of Rogue One without the dated CG Tarkin.

Otherwise I would be willing to painstakingly mask the footage from the Youtube video.

Well, it’d probably be better to have their permission first, though obviously nothing would really prevent sniping the footage.
I emailed them to scope out their sensibility about this kind of thing.

You’re right, let’s hope there’s a response.

The Leia deepfake looks alot better too, they have it tagged on the end.
