The Phantom Menace - Bobson's Theatrical Recontruction v2 (WIP) — Page 2

That’s ZigZig’s project and it isn’t affiliated with the 4K## team, so it wouldn’t be 4K99. He’s got a thread for it floating around in this section of the forum somewhere, but as far as I’m aware there hasn’t been an update in a while. I imagine COVID likely stalled progress, but that’s just conjecture.

Thanks for all the kind words about v1, the Palpatine office shot is my only annoyance with the project. I’ve experimented with adding 35mm grain to the BR so that it flows a little more smoothly, and so that the mild waxiness is toned down.

https://vimeo.com/446995177

With a v1.1, I’ll be putting it out in 5.1 using the track included with ZigZig’s LD, which I’m assuming it’s the Cinema DTS as I don’t have it otherwise. A larger bitrate would also be included, somewhere around 35gb or larger. Grain would also be added as mentioned to allow everything to mesh together.

No, I believe the cinema DTS is different. I have it. I’ll PM you.

Is it synced to anyone’s own project or anything else for that matter? I can’t seem to get it to work with my project. I’m assuming it’s still synced to a 24fps timecode or something for that matter.

was 4k99 ever gonna come out? cause I saw on the forum that a 4k scan of the prequels was happening

That’s on hold indefinitely. Poita (the guy doing the scans) went radio silent about a year ago. He was having a lot going on in his personal life and I imagine he just got burnt out. That, and on the first attempt scanning the film he got ill from the print itself. I really hope the cat is doing well.

Side note: I seem to remember ZigZig mentioning somewhere he got his hands on a 4k scan of a print but upon looking around again, I can’t seem to find where he mentioned it. If anyone could find that for me I’d be very appreciative. Take this with a grain of salt. I might just be having a burnout moment.

JEDIT: Oops didn’t even see page 2. Sorry about that guys.
@jzilli
Thanks for finding that. I knew I wasn’t crazy.

I don’t know much about it, but these threads have some more info

You are not mistaken. ZigZig announced it around the 20th anniversary of TPM:

I’ve gotten the DTS to sync up and am now uploading a 32gb copy of v1.1 to Mega. I’ll leave it on overnight and hope it’s done by the morning.

After this will be starting on the Puppet Yoda version and getting that all to fit in with the BR, which may be a pain to do but we’ll see.

EDIT: I just noticed a missing shot as the Trade Feds approach Naboo. Looks like I’ll be rendering out another copy…

ZigZig is overseeing a scan from the film’s 35mm release prints.

Bobson,

This looks amazing! However, I and some others are having audio sync issues with V1.1.1.

Thank you again for all your hard work. It’s amazing how much better this is than the DVD!

I don’t suppose anyone has a chapter list/file that will work with this? The chapters from Adywan’s old theatrical DVD might work but I don’t have it, unfortunately. Official DVD/BR ones will obviously be off starting at the podrace.

FYI, I made a synced AC3 5.1 track from ZigZig’s bit-perfect laserdisc capture, that will work with v1.15 at least; that one still has sync issues with the audio track, and it’s AAC, which is a format I’m not a fan of within video containers.

I sadly wasn’t able to retain the Dolby EX/6.1 configuration, but it’s still the laserdisc 5.1 mix, and it’s synchronized to Bobson’s v1.15 release!

Anyone who wants it, shoot me a PM. Thanks to ZigZig for giving me permission to share this.

(For those who don’t want to bother with that, I believe you can just apply a delay in mkvtoolnix to the audio; someone said -500 ms over at a different forum, but I’m not positive if that’s correct, YMMV.)

Really want to check this out, especially with CGI Yoda!

Another kind member helped me get a hold of this, and I watched it yesterday during my Life Day celebrations.

I’m utterly gobsmacked with how good this looks, and CGI Yoda in the theatrical cut is a dream come true. It actually makes it feel very in-line with HAL9000’s Custom Special Edition trilogy (which are my favourite versions of the OT). This will probably be my preferred way to watch TPM and I look forward to following any possible future updates this project.

Is there any way for me to get a link to this excellent project?

Hi, Bobson. I was wondering when you’ll start working on the real Original Theatrical Version (the one with the puppet Yoda). Thank you.

Work has restarted on this as I now have a 35mm scan of the theatrical cut, and am now using it as a source instead of the HDTV version. I’ve cut the 2019 Blu-Ray to line it up with ZigZig’s laserdisc, and am using the 35mm scan to fill the gaps, of which there are 9.

Here’s a look at a bit of the work I’ve done on the 35mm, trying to make it look a little closer to the Blu-Ray, but of course there’s still some grain and scratches that prevail since this is the raw scan with no cleanup.

Top is the raw scan, then my colour/cleanup, and then the Blu-Ray.

WOW that looks incredible. Did Zig’s 35mm scan come out already or did someone else get their hands on a print? Either way I’m hard. I haven’t watched this film proper in ages with the exception of the version I got from you almost a year ago. I’m in eager anticipation of this. Keep up the good work my dude, TPM deserves more love from the fan restoration community.

Puppet Yoda this time around or CGI?

Zig’s 35mm scan hasn’t come out yet, this is a seperate scan that’s been done by different people.

I still don’t love the film, I think its a boring mess of crap but I think it’s important that it’s preserved in some fashion.

CG Yoda still for this project, cleaning up the Puppet Yoda will take a lot more time.

Speaking of cleanup, here’s a comparison with the first 4 35mm shots

Bobson, i believe these are 2.39:1, matching the latest Blu-ray. any chance you could release 2.35:1 versions of these, matching the previous Blu release/theatrical aspect ratio?

Gotcha. The cleanup looks great. Keep us posted.

I’d love to see some scenes with the CGI characters if you get the chance (even if you don’t end up using it). I’ve often wondered if a scan of a print would look more natural than the sterilized look of the home video transfers and how much the CGI stands out.

Wait… there’s a proper scan of 35mm TPM theatrical cut out there now? I’ve literally dreamed of this coming to existence for such a long time! I love the colors in the original screencap of the raw scan, but it’s definitely great that we’ll have a color graded/corrected version as well!

Anyone, please, if your heart is that of a true SW fan, you know what it feels like to want to get something like this.
Anyone out there, please point me in the right direction so I can get this raw scan. The one with all the grain intact and without any cleanup.
Please, help.

I can’t even think of a good comparison as to what the level of excitement would be like,… to be able to finally see this.
