Only if there’s a LUT for it, but it may introduce unintended effects to shift so radically.

I also intend to apply the main LUT at something like 66% in order to benefit from it overall and hopefully avoid some of its more extreme effects.

Just in case you missed it:

Now that I look at it, the LUT is indeed too red, so I’ve made another one, it should be more balanced: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rOLnh768sRVLtMfikZtEzVsHMG2IIFzO/view?usp=sharing
Comparison

In the download link, I’ve included ffplay and a batch file to preview the LUT if someone want to check how it looks, so I can tweak it if necessary (the location of the movie file has to be set in preview_LUT.bat).

I really hope Naboo/Theed shot doesn’t get cut.

I like the Naboo shot being in there for a more direct link to the PT, but agree with others that it kind of sticks out compared to the other (gorgeous) additional/altered shots throughout the film.

If the speed of the destroyer’s surface explosions weren’t a little off (they’re too fast, right? And we don’t know if there would be frame rate issues if the explosion elements are slowed down?) …I would say many folks with a bit more effects knowledge than me would possibly be able to fix it by adding in a few more layers of explosion and particle effects that are moving at a speed more consistent with the scale being depicted in the other “falling destroyer” shots.

I am a fan of the Theed shot too though, and would be sad to see it go!

My only worry with the LUT is the color of Kylo’s saber on the Death Star

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Ok so I sent a message to Poppasketti letting him know our situation and asking him if we would take on the Naboo shot.
Ill keep yall posted for what becomes of it.

skenera: id love to check out the LUTs but I have no idea what im looking at when I download it…

HAL: I looked for the clip in The Mandolorian where the bigger Mando starts a fight and it ends with them crossing vibro blades but I couldn’t find anything on youtube. I know its there so if you can find it that clip might be what your looking for since there is no music or talking in the last shot that I remember.

This is the way.

Axios, I didn’t mention it, but you can preview the LUT on Windows only.

Extract “reduce_green_tint_v3.7.7z” with WinRAR or 7-Zip, you’ll get these files:

  • ffplay.exe - A basic video player that can apply a LUT in real time
  • preview_LUT.bat - A batch file that contains the command to play a video with a LUT
  • reduce_green_tint_v3.7.cube - The LUT itself

Right-click on “preview_LUT.bat” then click on Edit.
Replace “C:\TROS.mkv” with the path to the video file.
If you don’t know it, go to the location of the video file, hold down the Shift key and right-click the file, then click Copy as Path. You can now paste it into “preview_LUT.bat”.
Save the changes and close the window.
Double-click on “preview_LUT.bat”, a window should appear with the movie and the colors should be a little bit different.
There is no interface but it’s easy to use : https://ffmpeg.org/ffplay.html#While-playing

Ok skenera, thanks for the effort but its not working for me. ffplay.exe wont launch (I followed your directions). I’ll just wait until the next workprint or a png comparison or something.

This is the way.

Has it yet been considered giving the The Rise Of Skywalker an alternate title for the fan-edit?
Not that its a bad name or anything, I just find preferable when fan-edits/cuts use it’s own title/rename.
Either way is fine just a thought.

Hal is just sticking to the format of how he has titled the other Sequel Trilogy films. TFA: Restructured, TLJ: Legendary, TROS: Ascendant.

Still, it’s an odd naming convention since Restructured is a description of the primary edit while the other two names don’t really describe the changes.

It doesn’t really bug me though, and I don’t know how to fix it other than something like TLJ: A Collection of Minor Changes which Improve the Film and TROS: Desperately Trying to Save it in Post After the Warehouse Fire that Destroyed the Rest of Our Footage.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I probably would’ve named TFA:R differently if I’d foreseen the other two edits existing. Oh, well!

The suffix, I mean, not the film title.

The prequels had a long history of being renamed by the time I did my second set of edits starting in 2013. The sequels did not, and I did not think when I worked on TFA:R that there would be any more. Plus, I like the sequel titles overall much more than the prequel titles.

The worst thing about the sequel titles is that they all start with “The.” I don’t know why JJ didn’t just make it “Rise of Skywalker.”

I would be very much in favour of an alternate version of Ascendant that excludes the ‘THE’ part of the title, you know, just to mix it up a little… 😉 That way we have the third of each trilogy starting with ‘Return’ ‘Revenge’ and ‘Rise’

EDIT:

As things are presently, I used a pitched-up Kylo saber effect. Sort of sounds like a car engine with something wrong with it.

Would it be possible to keep the Kylo saber ignition effect at a regular pitch, but have it blended with the regular Anakin saber ignition sound??? 🤔

It will be difficult to have a LUT without keying out the lightsabers and force lightning, as those are also blue.

Unless you guys are only referring to exterior scenes.

Would you consider cutting Poe’s line “Did we ever find his volume control?”. I think 3PO’s new line about an R2 unit works better on it’s own and we’d have one less moment of Poe treating 3PO like trash (specially odd after he just sacrificed himself). Just cut to Finn & Jannah before Poe starts talking.

Honestly it’s bizarre how Poe treats 3PO & D-O compared to his relation to BB-8 in the previous films.

I can see how it plays; I agree in principle.

To address an idea from Dom’s thread: I will more than likely end up releasing the regular (Rey Palpatine) version before a Rey Nobody version. In case there’s some huge issue that gets glossed over, I’d rather just fix one than two!

That makes sense … things always come up.

I was thinking about things … well, mainly how Disney screwed the pooch with Star wars sequel trilogy, that the whole “Skywalker Family Saber” arc is quite silly-er. Especially with Rey being a palpatine, the scene in TFA makes even less sense … why would the saber call out to a palpatine?

Anyway, nothing to do with this edit specifically … just how … disconnected these movies are and add things that just don’t makes sense.

Sigh.

Sigh.

Because it’s an artifact with a lengthy history of being used by powerful force users and a living, force-sensitive crystal inside it, and that’s the sort of thing that calls out to force users, even ones with primarily latent talents, especially ones with an important destiny?

There are a bunch of valid complaints to make about the sequel trilogy, but this seems like a non-starter to me.

Yeah, that’s how I explained it away. The Crystal is alive and even more attuned to the Force and the micro-biotic Whills and their will… or whatever.
