If the crystal was truly beyond repair, that would at least be a reason for Rey to bury it in the final scene.

I like that!

Alright, I sent MoviesRemastered and a couple others this latest version yesterday. This is a lower quality render but in terms of the saber I would say this version is finalized (other than some nitpick fixes with Finn’s part at the very end). All masking issues were in the theatrical release and I think the effect is subtle enough to not be overpowering.

All right, encoding the next workprint now. I did a pass with skenera’s LUTs. I know there’s some things I missed and I will certainly do a more detailed pass for the final version, picking out shots that need a different combination.

For Exegol, I set the regular LUT at 50%, and the Exegol-gray LUT at 50% to sort of split the difference.

Looking great, one thing I’d say is be wary of the tip of the saber, sometimes the way the crackling happens to be it sort of gives the appearance of boxy top which is less than ideal.

Thanks for the feedback, I showed my brother this IRL and he said the exact same thing during a point in the video.

Will the new workprint you’re rendering replace the version that’s in the G Drive folder right now? I just discovered that one earlier this week and watched it the other night. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Yes it will. If you want to keep the old print, download it. If it doesn’t let you do that, copy it to your own Google Drive, then make a copy of that copy, then download the copy’s copy (this bypasses download limits).

Thanks. Yeah, I downloaded it before I watched it so I’m anxious to watch the new one with all the changes. Keep up the great work, Hal.

Is the next workprint the 4th?

Yes.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

If we’re emphasizing on Reys darker side via the sabre could we maybe consider Rey indirectly killing Leia

Haven’t watched your video, but this is how I interpreted the scene in the theater and how I still interpret it, and I still think it’s weird that nobody else seems to see it that way.

Rey definitely killed Leia by accident, you guys. That’s why she tried to run away and hide on Ahch-To.

Just skimmed the Workprint. Loving all the changes. Gray Exegol rocks! Only issue I noticed is that the rest of the LUT makes the picture a LOT warmer and more red.

The Skywalker Saga:

This is the way.

The crawl is good, I’d say maybe capitalize stuff like “First Order” and “Resistance.” Exegol looks much better, which also makes the purple lightsaber not as jarring. But some of the other shots, particularly the rebel base, are very red. Personally, I would add more/different music to the lightsaber fight on the Deathstar, as the duel of the fates bit from Solo doesn’t fit well in a fight scene, IMO. The Naboo star destroyer shot at the end of the movie is a slightly different aspect ratio than the rest of the film. Those are the only critiques I have, everything else you’ve done is great.

You have an issue with Skenera’s work, you have an issue with me! 😠
Only joking, but I don’t understand how removing the hideous aqua blanket over the film is an issue.

Haven’t seen the workprint yet, but it SHOULD look like this:

The sequels have a nasty habit of capitalising too much. The original trilogy had little to no capital words. This is a crawl, not a Trump tweet. Captilising doesn’t make words “more importanter”

But some of the other shots, particularly the rebel base, are very red.

Better than having all whites be green.

And on a personal note, this project continues to be worked on using borrowed snippets of time. Life is a 24/7 marathon in my home, and I’ve been getting some flack for even the average of like 7 minutes I spend at the computer for this, so I’m going to need to watch it.

What remains of the pipeline for this project is very doable, even if heavily segmented and slow.

The OP lists the few bits and pieces still needed from others. These should be things I can easily lay into place. The audio for the crackling saber is simple to do but will require time.

Once that’s done I will reconnect media in order to ditch my proxy rip with the better rip, crossing fingers that there’s no issue that would require manual realignment. Then I will slowly scrub through the movie in order to apply the LUTs properly, carful not to skip over segments that may show different settings and things like that. Then I can encode final output.

Burbin is doing subtitles, which will be immensely helpful, as I don’t know when I’d be able to do them at this point. Ash can do a DTS encode, and I should be able to sync a chapter file.

A group commentary can hopefully take place, if I can sell it and be able to make space for it that will also work with the right members’ availability. Good thing is that if we can do it at all, all we need is a ‘sync-locked’ draft to go on and we wouldn’t need to wait for the final product to get it done.

Dom just sent me his Rey vs. TIE sequence, so we might be pretty close to a sync-lockable point.

Liking it a lot! Like others said, it is a bit overly red in places, but could be worse for a WIP. Most jarring thing might be the Naboo shot, and not just because of the aspect ratio. Not sure how exactly to describe it, but it seems… off. Maybe how bright it is, or quickly it’s moving? Not very precise or helpful, sorry; heck, maybe it’s just because it’s new and I’ve watched this movie too many times now.

Keep up the good work [at a manageable pace] Hal & co!

Alright, having compared workpirnt 3 and 4, I have some opinions about the LUTs.

For Exagol they look great, everywhere else they are almost too much. It’s like we swung the pendulum from being too blue to being too red. You can see this especially in Kylo’s face, it almost looks like he’s sunburnt. I wonder what it would look like if the intensity was just brought down slightly. Another issue with the LUTs is that the movie becomes incredibly bright, almost too much.

I think a middle ground between what the movie had and where the LUTs are now would provide a better product.
