The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 203

When one side of the blade is straight it gives it a weird curved look, almost like a scimitar.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Man, I’m really loving this effect. I’m probably projecting a lot more on it than others, but when I see the flickering blade, I feel like the amount of work Rey probably put into trying to put the lightsaber back together feels a lot more tangible. Rey is a scavenger. She might not be able to rebuild things perfectly, but she makes things work. Just that little touch adds to the character of Rey and the lightsaber, in my opinion.

I love this perspective! Also, Rey would probably blame herself for the lightsaber’s destruction and could add weight to her statement when she tells Leia about not feeling worthy to wield it.

Ooo, good point! I didn’t even think about that line either.

If we’re emphasizing on Reys darker side via the sabre could we maybe consider Rey indirectly killing Leia idea from my vid here @ 1:39.

I don’t want to rehash an ideas vid which has already had the no from Hal but maybe just that idea in the vid showing Reys dark side more when she stabs Kylo.

I don’t know, Rey killing Leia would certainly remove any likeability that’s left for the character, on the other hand, Rey killing her parents is probably your best bet at really pushing her character towards the darkside…

Sure no worries just a thought, yeah that crackling sabre idea is up there with the force ghosts and sith whispers, perfect. 😁👌

I believe it’s been mentioned, but has someone tried inserting in a subtle sound effect of the Force Skype connection when Rey looks out at the ghosts?

I recall Snooker made Rey and Kylo’s force Skypes sound more like they do in TLJ, but I don’t really think it is necessary to do for the ghosts. We’ve never had that sound associated with the ghosts before.

Saturdays are my free day lol so I have had a lot of time to play around with the footage. Here is the Loseless quality version of the Pasaana Caverns. I fixed masking issues and made the saber more subtle. I think I got everything that I saw as an issue, but you can only watch something so many times lol.

Google compresses the file so it’ll look different on my drive than when you download the file (which is almost 6 gigs… which is wild!).

Well, you giving up so much free time is much appreciated, mate.

I’m still only on my phone but everything looks pretty perfect apart from the blade gets a little too thick and over exposed when Finn gets it. Everything else seems on point.

Yeah I kind of enjoy the masking tbh, it’s oddly calming. I think I can try to work on Finn’s part… maybe trying to lower the glow as much as possible when its that close to the camera

I’m the same, man. Feels like the more hectic work gets the more I wanna turn my back on it and get stick into these edits. It’s great escapism.

Cool, it just looks a bit over white. Maybe thin it down, up the crackle and increase the bluer outer glow?

I still can’t download large files but if you wanna do a low render and have me run through any scenes like I have been then just let me know and I’ll pick them up in the morning.

Really impressive work dude.

Here’s another go at Ben’s death, but with the original score. I probably shouldn’t have tried re-scoring the scene on the first attempt. There might be a better way at extending what John Williams did here, or use another track from the soundtrack, but here’s another try at extending the death. Recutting, regrading and some FX work will be needed in order to achieve this fully.

Nice work, kewlfish! You and Movies Remastered seem well equipped to see this through.

And about Ben’s death, if someone would be able and wish to do the two or three effects shots, I’m sure I or someone can get audio to match. That’s a big if, but I’ll leave it open and we’ll just see.

Thanks, Hal. Sorry about the first attempt with the re-score from yesterday.

Wasn’t sure whether to post this here or in the general ideas thread…

One of the biggest fourth wall breaking moments of TROS that still really rubs me the wrong way on repeat viewings is the now-infamous “somehow, Palpatine returned” line.

I’ve tried to trim the line to give it a more dramatic punch, without being as clunky and tension-killing as it is in the final cut. Poe now simply says “We’ve decoded the intel from the First Order spy, and it confirms the worst… Palpatine.” Palpatine’s presence (in any form, alive or dead) will always be a terrifying, bone-chilling threat to the Rebels and Resistance - why would they need to speculate on if he’s actually alive or not? Surely even just discovering an old contingency plan would be enough to evoke the same exact reaction?

With the original “somehow” framing, this moment has a predominantly speculative tone. Unfortunately, this speculation swiftly becomes pointless and irrelevant as the moment doesn’t actually lead to anything new being revealed to the audience. With this very minor cut, the “The Emperor is dead” & “Dark Science, Cloning, Secrets only the Sith knew…” etc. lines become independent responses that aren’t necessarily factual to the canon of the film, but are instead just pieces of frantic back-and-forth chatter amongst individual characters. In the final film these lines seemingly only serve to act as heavy exposition to try and (poorly) spell everything out to the audience. This cut hopefully makes this exposition-dump of a scene just that tiny bit less of a, well, dump.

Hopefully this also goes to somewhat preserve a casual viewer’s curiosity regarding Palpatine’s exact means of resurrection, something which in my opinion the theatrical cut otherwise abruptly shoo’s away with the “Somehow” framing. “Has the Emperor truly returned, or is there more to it?” - This is a question and mystery that the audience should have throughout the majority of the runtime, all the way up to Palps, Ben and Rey’s final confrontation, where the exact nature of his existence and plans all begin to click into place and are fully revealed.

Maybe with this cut it could even make the idea of having the Fortnite broadcast subtly playing as the decoded message slightly more believable?

The only problem with this cut is that Poe’s head quickly jerks upwards (due to the removal of “Somehow”). I tried to add some subtle interpolation to this particular moment but - mostly due to my poor editing and FX abilities - there’s still 3 or 4 interpolated frames which unsurprisingly have some weird blurring and artifacts on Poe’s face… I should note as well that this was done just with Hal’s V3 workprint in FCPX, so maybe with a lossless source and someone who actually knows what they’re doing (i.e. not someone like me!), we may be able to tease out a far more positive result to make this line/word removal totally seamless and without any weird frame interpolation oddities?

I am in no way a pro editor, as you’ve likely gathered by now lol. This is just a very rough mockup of an idea that I had in an effort to try and (marginally) improve this pretty dreadful moment… presented here as a means to hopefully throw it over into more capable hands to see it fully realised, if anyone’s interested in giving it a proper shot?

I definitely like the idea of having the crackling blade for the whole movie. Feels so obviously perfect, considering the parallel between Rey and Kylo that they were going for, that I’m surprised J.J. didn’t do it that way in the first place.
