The divide is largely between those who wanted or didn’t want a subversive film… that’s kinda opposite desires.
Now as I’m sure you’re all aware, TLJ is incredibly divisive. Some hate it, some love it. My question is this: how can we bridge that divide?
The first thing that comes to mind is giving Snoke a backstory. You can still kill him off but people won’t be so annoyed because they’ll have learned who he is.
For Rey’s parents being deemed underwhelming by some, I rest the blame solely on TFA, so I’m gonna ignore it.
As for Luke, I’m not sure how one could approach his arc.

Probably not a worthy endeavor. Pleasing everybody is impossible, and we already have edits for almost everyone’s opinions on the movie.

Trying to please everyone is a noble endeavor but you don’t have to look further than TROS to see it’s results.
Peace is a lie
There is only passion…

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Not sure how this is done without completely rewriting the entire trilogy
The only way I’d say you could please (most) everyone is a project that mimicked the choose your own adventure like what I understand Black Mirror Bandersnatch did.

Couldn’t have said it better.

Did RoS really try to please everyone, though? It feels more like it tried to please those who hated TLJ.

It tried. By Rey’s parents still being “nobodies” (but by choice) and Rose’s cameo. It was half-assed, but attempted to please everyone.

This is Star Wars not Goosebumps

Abrams’ films were childish and horrific… maybe it is Goosebumps! 😜
Hayden Christensen was in Goosebumps once. Does that count?
Anyway, what if Rey’s parents were left open to interpretation? Or would not answering the question at all annoy people even more?

Personally, her parents being anyone of significance was upsetting. Her being a “nobody” was fantastic. Her curiosity about her family and desire for belonging was so built into her character arc, that to not address it at all would be negligent.
Was Rey’s parentage actually an essential part of her character? That’s what everyone assumed after TFA, but in the movie she basically just drops the question after Maz says they’re never coming back. I feel like Rian directly addressed the Rey theories just to show that he “subverted the fan expectations” or whatever.

I guess you could just drop that plot thread entirely after TFA… But some people would still say she’s a Mary Sue and her Force prowess has to come from somewhere.

And that is why pleasing everyone with this movie is impossible. No matter what you do, at least one contingent of people will hate it.

Her desire for belonging was essential to her character, and having every character in TFA remark about it tied the question of parentage to it. That’s why calling her no one was so satisfying: people in-universe continue to wonder how she could have such power, just like in the real world.
The Last Jedi: Rekindled pleases me just fine and if it doesn’t please you then I’m sorry. There is no pleasing you.
heil Palpatine!

I feel like you’re misinterpreting TFA. Her desire for belonging is a big part of her character, but her parentage was never a big part of it. It was actually almost never commented on, the only people obsessed with Rey’s parents were the fans. That’s why acknowledging the Rey theories feels like an unnecessary fourth wall break for me, because there’s zero evidence in TFA that Rey’s parents are anyone important.

It would please me if he cut all the stupid cartoon jokes. But as it is, with the prank call and the dumb BB-8 stuff still in the movie, it still doesn’t please me.

BB8 in the AT-ST was removed, as was the coin gun.
I agree, though, that TLJ took a misstep in making Rey super concerned about identifying her parents. Kylo should have promised something like “I know where your parents are” rather than “who” they are.

But the plugging holes bit and the drunken alien were left in. So were all of Hux’s slapstick moments. BB-8 and Hux play the part of comic relief way too much in this movie, and I don’t think Poppa’s edit does enough to remedy that. But I understand if you disagree.

Yeah, that would have been better. It would fit in more with Rey’s desire for belonging, and it would feel less meta.

Her desire to go back to Jakku makes it more about the who she belongs with. Not where. She rejects what Maz says when she’s told they aren’t coming back for her, and when she finally accepts it she starts seeking Luke to be that parent for her.
At the end of the day, I’ve always disliked The Force being hereditary. Made the Star Wars universe feel so small. The decision to make Rey disconnected from the dynasties helped make the universe big again. Making her the daughter of the Emperor’s clone made the universe tiny again.
That’s why I loved TLJ, and struggled with Abrams’ films.
I wasn’t doubting Rey Nobody, I like that element of her character. I just wish they did it in less of a painfully obvious, fourth wall breaking way. I still don’t see any evidence of Rey’s parents being a mystery in TFA, you haven’t provided any evidence to support it. I would like it more if they just treated her heritage as a matter of fact “of course she’s a nobody” sort of thing, and focused Rey’s character arc around her intense Force power and desire for companionship.
