Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 43

Ok guys, I put together a very very amaturish mock clip, (borrowing from some clips posted, and audio from some games and other films) for a TLJ redux idea.

I hated the way the film portrayed Luke as the uncle who would murder Ben Solo because he sensed darkness. “Hi…this is my Uncle, Homicide.”

To me, that would mean Luke learned nothing from Yoda’s warnings about force visions and leaping into action prematurely. If the theatrical cut’s vision holds true, Luke learned nothing from losing his hand on Bespin!

Rather, I thought it would be more appropriate to do something along the lines of the bloodline Novel.

Ben (and the wider galaxy)discovers that Vader is his grandfather. This is the impetus for his turn. He feels betrayed by a secret kept from him by his family for “his own good.” (a similar small mistake has been the impetus in previous films.)

Anakin started on his path to the dark side by believing the white lie that he would be free to save those he loved.

Luke feels a pull to the dark side when he discovers that Ben neglects to tell him the truth about his father

Now Kylo feels the pull to darkness based on a lie of commission about his grandfather. To me, Kylo’s turn would be more thematically consistent, as would Luke’s arc (without tarnishing his character.)

In the clip, Kylo encounters Vader’s mask at Luke’s temple. It calls to him, as Anakin’s saber called to Rey. A paralell of TFA, a different destiny.

I like it, especially how you masked Kylo into the Mustafar fight instead of just playing a flashback. One thing that kind of bugged me about the Rise of Skywalker’s force visions is that they don’t include the character experiencing them the way the Force Awakens’ force vision did.
Although I can’t help but wonder: if you replaced the first flashback with this, what would the other two be?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

I would trim the Mustafar bit. It’s really good, but goes on for too long, and one or two of the shots of Kylo’s face have some really iffy rotoscoping.

The Mustafar shots are actually the work of the very talented Bradley Klein who provided the voice of Palpatine in the SW Theory Vader fan film.

Here is the source video.

His channel is listed in the description.

I wish I had those masking skills. I have wanted to do something like this concept clip in a TLJ edit for a long time, but the footage simply did not exist yet to make it believable.

Snooker, John, and others here could probably do a clip like this, but make it more convincing. My PC was not letting me make fine tuned cuts, but i hope it did not suck. lol

I don’t think you guys could hear the audio of senators shouting, but here is a breakdown of what’s in there audio video wise.

  1. the Shots of Luke created by John.

  2. audio of Andy Serkis from heavenly sword PS3 “with every age that comes to pass, there is one born to greatness…I am the one.”

  3. Audio of Anakin’s dream vision from the ROTS edit: Shadows of the Empire.

  4. Spliced audio of Han taken from the film Age of Adeline. “The Truth! You never told anyone?” Leia: No! It was Snoke"

  5. Audio of Senators in an Uproar taken from AOTC deleted scenes.

  6. Spliced audio of Snoke saying Vader

  7. Footage from the Vader VS Kylo Ren fan film.

That’s great and all but literally the only line I could make out was “No. It was Snoke.”

Hello There! here is an unfinished test to place the battle of Mustafar in TLJ, I have an idea behind my head with the voice of Vader, so that he guides Kylo to him to link the line “finish what you started” with the he story of Palpatine pulling the strings, to me it is more important that this revelation is made just after the death of Luke.

I always get worried about disrupting continuity. I seem to get blamed for that a lot.

Incredible. The use of the stormtrooper assault from battlefront 2 footage is bloody genius.

That’s amazing! The music transitions could use a little work. In the shot from inside the transport, you can clearly see that it’s not Mustafar, and I’m not really onboard with a shot featuring a palm tree, but aside from that this is fantastic! Oh and I’d leave out the shot of the eruption.

What Battlefront map did you use and how did you make it look like Mustafar? I’m guessing the burning foliage was already there?

I think it’s a cinematic trailer for the Rise of Skywalker update, and by the looks of it I think it’s Ajan Kloss though I’m not sure if that’s a map in the game.

It is. There’s actually a mod for the PC version of Battlefront II that recolors Takodana to look like Mustafar, with the red sky and all that (https://www.nexusmods.com/starwarsbattlefront22017/mods/2686). Using the cinematic tools could provide some good establishing shots. Anything involving in-game characters will stick out, but the trees and everything else look good.

I feel like this should really be obvious, but every mention of “the Rebellion” should be replaced with “the Resistance”. I swear, it’s like the filmmakers didn’t care.

I think RJ was just calling it what it was.

Fair point, and I do agree that’s what he was going for, but he’s also the one who wrote the line “The First Order will control all major systems within weeks.” He’s doubling down on retreading the OT. I don’t see that as a good thing. The situation should be made to seem different.

I agree, I think his angle was “let’s stop pretending it’s not rebels v empire 2.0 and just say it how it is” which I disagree with.
TLJ was their chance at world building the state of the galaxy after ROTJ and unfortunately they did nothing with it .

I get what you guys are saying about The Last Jedi needing time show the state of the Galaxy, but I think the focus was on the characters. There was no more Republic after The Force Awakens, so why bother trying to explain that needlessly complicated political dynamic? I thought he did a good job just trying to move things forward, rather than trying to explain choices of another director or answer questions that never had an answer to begin with.

To that point, I think the use of Rebels and Resistance are both good together. The Resistance got its name from twisting the rise of The First Order, but now that they have that control, now that there is no Republic, the First Order is becomIng the establishment. They are rebelling against what has been established, and still resisting that takeover.

I just don’t think calling it what it is (OT 2.0) is gonna do us any favors in making it not OT 2.0. We should make the fight seem more even. The Resistance fleet seen in TLJ could simply be one of many, although that would require several story changes.

World building is overrated. It’s one of the many things that killed TROS.

I feel a little more context about what’s happening in this world when picking up the story after 30 years, and after a trilogy set in the past that gave us a great deal of context, would have gone a long way.

My stance on revising fan edits.

What world building was in Rise of Skywalker? Or do you mean in The Rise of Skywalker novelisation?

I don’t disagree but I feel like the impact on the story on the whole was pretty minimal, whereas some people think it broke the movies or some shit.

There’s plenty of world building. Every scene adds a new element to the lore. It’s suffocating. Whether they explain how those elements make sense or not doesn’t matter.

I mean, if that’s the threshold, then every film has plenty of world building.

Well yes, they do. But TROS had too much of it.

I actually felt like there wasn’t enough world building. There was way too much exposition, but exposition and world building aren’t the same thing. World building fleshes out the movie’s universe, giving it the proper context. Exposition is an inconvenience, something the movie just needs to get out of the way.

In my opinion, a proper example of world building would be explaining the whole thing with Palpatine’s return. “Secrets only the Sith knew” isn’t a sufficient explanation. We need to know the broad strokes of how he returned, and why he can’t return again. Otherwise, it just feels like Palpatine can come back any time he wants.
