The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 76

Yeah, the idea that any act is irredeemable - or that dying is required for redemption - seems to spit in the face of the core message of the franchise…

To be fair, I don’t blame anyone who thinks Ben deserves a harsh punishment or even death. I think if the films had done a better job of sticking to those themes, then they would’ve understood the forgiveness perspective better. But the films, as they are, don’t really explore that aspect as much as they should have, IMO.

Maybe it is just an aspect of our modern day culture that makes people feel that way. But I think that is all the more reason that this film should have taken that approach.

Agree 100%. But I won’t be trying to keep Ben alive in this edit. Having his ghost appear at the end to hit the redemption message home, so we at least don’t suppose he’s working his way through purgatory or something.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Despite me wanting to see a Ben Lives ending, I agree that I think Ascendant would work best to keep Ben dead, and have him appear as a Force ghost, like you said. A part of what persuaded me was the wonderful “Falcon and friends” version of the ending snooker and Poppa were working on. It definitely keeps the ending more Rey focused, rather than Rey and Ben focused.

I’m sure this will sound ironic coming from someone who is in the Reylo camp, but if this edit is going to leave Ben dead, a part of me kind of wonders if the kiss should go ahead and be cut too. Admittedly, I don’t think the romance was as explicitly set up in this film as it should have been. And going from the kiss and them happily smiling at each other, to Ben falling over dead, feels almost comedic. Maybe keeping it would show that future Jedi will be allowed to love, though.

Don’t get me wrong, I still want to see a Ben Lives edit that keeps the kiss and all that jazz, but if Ben is going to stay dead and leave no potential for a future romance, then what is the point of keeping it and tease/surprise the audience? However Ascendant goes, I think I’m fine with it either way.

Woah, mate. You must have misunderstood. No need to accuse me of spitting in the face of Star Wars!
I wasn’t serious, I love Kylo Ren’s character and all, I just think that for someone who has suffered so much in their life, they might be better off chilling in Jedi heaven.

Edit:

Worth also mentioning that Kylo Ren no longer, from a story perspective, needs to stay alive… He fulfilled his purpose, saved the one he loved, got redeemed, yada yada yada… joined his family in the afterlife.

I don’t really agree. If Vader survived ROTJ, and Palpatine got redeemed, maybe I’d agree with you. But I think that Ben needs to have some kind of punishment for his actions as Kylo. It’s not like he’s technically dead anyway, so I think his theatrical fate is fine. Especially with Snooker’s ending concept removing the “Rey ends the movie alone” aspect.

I’ve been lurking for a while, but I made an account because I wanted to let you guys know that you’re doing phenomenal work with this edit, and because I had some ideas to share.

How would everyone feel if Palpatine’s physical reveal was delayed until Rey confronts him? Just end the opening scene after Ren picks up the Wayfinder. Then, after Rey crushes BB8 with the tree, cut back to Kylo flying through space, his landing on Exegol, etc. and end the scene when he turns towards Palps and we hear the line “I have died before.”

To make up for the loss of the rest of the scene, include voice over snippets of the rest of their conversation in the scenes where Kylo gets his mask back and the Knights of Ren are walking through the halls. This would mean cutting out the Stormtroopers commenting on the Knights, but I don’t think anything of value is lost there.

I’ve mentioned this before, but does anyone have any ideas on how we could extend Ben’s death by having Rey grieve his death longer. In the film, it completely glosses over it almost entirely. No idea why, especially since he’s one of the most important focal point characters in this trilogy, and is my personal favorite character in the Sequel Trilogy.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

Well, that’s the whole movie for you… I agree though if it can be done well.

And I’m not sure how stretching Palpatine out would go, but I like having the movie just get it out of the way.

I personally thought that her never grieving Ben was a result of them changing the ending from ben lives to ben dies shortly before release.

In a few years someone will eventually spill the beans on what happened behind the scenes.

How do you plan to have the civilian masses tribute the skywalker name, maybe a chant like when the rebels shout “For Jedah!” in Rogue One.
