Just add the sand crawler shot beforehand. Should work fine.

A potential direction would be to lean on the idea that Rey is a feral Force user who can’t distinguish what her power actually comes from. In that case when she confronts Sheev it is the first time her power is being put to the test, so it isn’t if she can defeat him but whether she can do it using only the light side that counts.

This was where I thought her character was going. After her snarl in TFA, “you went straight to the dark” in TLJ, and especially after her lightning in this movie, I felt it was clear she was using the dark side most of the time, even though she was using it to do good. After all, it is quicker, easier, and more seductive, and Rey always tended to be motivated by strong emotions. I was really hoping for an “I am a Jedi, like my father before me” moment where she finds a light side way to defeat Palpatine. Instead we got a hilarious inversion of Luke throwing his saber away and refusing to fight: she force pulls a SECOND saber into her other hand, allowing her to more effectively EXPLODE Palpatine’s FACE.

I mean, is that what happened?

All Rey did was block/defend himself in that scene. Palpatine was killed by his own hubris, not Rey.

She deflected the lightning back at him, while walking at him. She could have deflected the lightning in any direction. To say that Palpatine killed himself is in my opinion as if to say that someone who threw a grenade at you and died of the explosion of said grenade, because you threw it back, committed suicide.
I’ll admit the comparison is a tad bit more extreme, but that’s roughly how I feel about Palpatine’s death.

You’re right, that IS an extreme (and ridiculous) comparison, especially since we have no evidence that you CAN deflect Force Lightning in any direction but towards the caster with a lightsaber (iirc, at least), since it’s reflected back at the caster every time it happens.

Anyway, meant to respond to this part in the original post…

I was really hoping for an “I am a Jedi, like my father before me” moment where she finds a light side way to defeat Palpatine.

Do you mean, like, ‘All you want is for me to hate, but I won’t. Not even you?’

You can deflect it in any direction. Obi wan does so in AOTC.

Edit: yeah, this phrase is basically what I want.

I like this direction a lot. It also can fit really nice with a “just Rey edit.

Anyway, please continue this great work!

EDIT:

Had some time and played around with splitting the chess scene. It can be done via CONCEPT clips:

1st section of movie:

https://vimeo.com/416127164
password:fanedit

Remaining part to be used for end on Tatooine.

https://vimeo.com/416102182
password: fanedit

The last clip does have the beeping sound, I clipped it as is to see what visual footage can be used for whatever and have the beeping sound removed and ambient noise to be used if need be.

Moving the Falcon chess game to the end is a brilliant idea! Also the coolest transition is from Chewbacca yelling-- to Rey leaving the ship, but this clearly is not working. And another establishing shot is probably not the best way to fix it. The problem going on is there are no audio or visual cues telling us that they’ve landed. We’re watching them play chess on a ship that sounds like it’s cruising through space, then suddenly in the next scene Rey is walking off the ship.

In this rough clip I’ve started with a shot of the Falcon flying and later inside the ship added some sounds and movement giving cues that the Falcon landed:

Ah, good idea. Maybe we could just reuse the rendition that will be cut if we remove the initial Chewbacca surviving reveal.

That’s good, and helps sell it. I haven’t tried it yet, but I imagine this sequence:

The Resistance reunion scene quietly fades to black.

Cut to the Falcon in hyperspace, then to the interior as the chess game is going on.

After the line, “You’re 200 years older than us, of course you’re gonna be better at this,” cut to the Falcon flying over Jawas. (Or even a new FX shot of exiting hyperspace within a binary system, possibly borrowing or augmenting TPM footage.) The alert sound can be heard before the cut, signaling their approach toward their destination.

Rey exits the ship, does her ritual, changes her name, and heads back into the Falcon to ride off into the sunsets. (No footage exists, but it would have been good for Rey to make eye contact with the rest on her way over and be welcomed back inside.)

My stance on revising fan edits.

Hal, your sequence would work well too. One thing to consider though, the Poe Finn ad-lib sounding banter about Chewie being 250 years old kind of sucks to actually watch their faces. The clip snooker made where you could hear their dialogue still going on from outside the ship was much more effective though I would have cut it off a bit sooner.

Been away for a bit, but wanted to ask if anybody has thought about turning the old woman at the end into Watto for shits and giggles. I have no reason for wanting to see this. None whatsoever.

If I had to pull something out of my ass, maybe Watto’s secretly been watching over the homestead out of guilt ever since Anakin showed up asking for his mother, and when the Lars got crispy and Luke pissed off he decided to wait around hoping for somebody to return - similar to Rey - showing Rey’s beyond that now and Watto got his comeuppance for being the slave owner indirectly responsible for Anakin’s downfall.

Again, no reason other than thinking it’d be neat for a few seconds and not an actual improvement for the film.

For all we know… Boba fett could have been chilling out on Tatooine in old man Luke’s hut for all this time 😉

Guys what if the nature of Han’s appearance was left ambiguous, cutting the line about being just a memory. In the Tatooine scene we see the ghost’s of Luke Leia and (ghost/alive Ben), now imagine a very faint yet visible Han Solo appearing right beside Leia, finally the big 3 together at the very end. A wholesome send off to our childhood heroes.
Like someone on another thread said, forget about canon that’s the ending I want to see!

Edit: You know, if they went with this for the theatrical cut, you can bet your asses they would have written an elaborate yet somewhat convincing explanation in a book somewhere.

I think it’s blindingly obvious he should be a memory, but if that’s controversial, I wouldn’t be against making it ambiguous. At the end of the day, though, he doesn’t glow. Do not take this as an invitation to make him glow.

Author
Time

Please God don’t make Han glow…

Ambiguity is fine, but I don’t want a confirmation that he’s “real” in a Force ghost sense. To me, that scene is entirely metaphor for what’s going on in Ben’s head and it was surprisingly effective at that. To me, Kylo didn’t actually have a vision of Han and didn’t actually speak to him - sure, that’s out of character for the series, but it worked very well for me.

Then again, I’m the guy who still maintains that Rey killed Leia by mistake and no one agrees with me, so…

No Ash you’re right about that scene with Han. Easily the best in the whole film I’d say.

Are there any TROS edits that have had a crack at leaving Rey dead at the end?

“The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.”

Yesterday I had an idea for a very radical edit and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.
Since I am no fan of palpatines return or Exegol for that matter, I have been thinking what the Way-finders might be apart from a TomTom for the Sith. What if the Way-finders were the dark side equivalent of those Jedi-Holocrons that contain lists of future Jedi?
But instead of charting force sensitive children, these list contain those that are easy to manipulate by the Sith and were used by Snoke to build the FO.
In order to remove Palpatine, the movie would start with Reys training and during that she will see Kylo through the force. Kylo is on Mustafar fighting who will now be Snokes most loyal servants to retrieve the artifact from Snokes palace. (it fits that it is on Mustafar, since he has a ring bearing ore from underneath Vaders castle) Rey will indentify the artifact as something she saw depicted in Lukes notes (can’t think of a better way to get them moving to Pasaana, sadly) and the plot continues normally.
After Ach-To Rey would join the space battle in Lukes X-wing, sending a signal that a) assembles the civil fleet and b) broadcast the list with the stolen children, causing many star destroyers throughout the FO fleet to cease fire.

Apart from these major changes, I would like to make some changes to the Death Star battle and the aftermath, yet I don’t know yet, how to achieve this. Anyways I think that after TLJ Rey should learn to take responsibility for her own actions as she has internalized by now that she is her own person. There are a few options to build on this theme. Firstly Rey should actively decide to take Lukes lightsaber. Then Chewies survival should either be postponed or cut. And finally Leias death shouldn’t enable Rey to stab Kylo, but rather her rage. Due to this incident she decides to go to Ach-To, speaks to Luke (although, please let the saber burn) and then has to confront Ben one last time, asking for the artifact, which in this version he wouldn’t have left in his ship. The last part is the difficult point, because I don’t know how to pull it off. (maybe a force time conference?) Yet it would conclude her journey towards taking responsibility very well.

P.S.: another little character twist related to the list-artifact-idea would be to reveal that Finn a) hasn’t been abducted by the FO, but joined them voluntarily or b) used to do civil service within the FO and joined the military voluntarily. Anyways the list-option would give Finn some more personal motivation for the quest.

YES!!!

Now we just need a purple lightsaber version!

Also, the audio seems to be completely out of sync in that clip…

yeah !, now there are new shots, someone would have to make a good mix

jonh this is really coming together beautifully! I did notice when Rey says “I’m all the Jedi” the ghosts are not behind her anymore.

I think the ghost’s just standing there in the background while Rey engages Palpatine’s lightning looks a little weird, maybe you could have them with their hands raised up.
