I mean, we could have both.
She could have visions of the past and future, her killing her parents and her possibly killing her friends, in fact her killing her parents creates a precedent, so the prospect of her killing her friends becomes all the more probable. Thus raising the stakes.

HAL, are you planning maybe to do something with the Fleet in this edit? Like, make it not being planet destroying. Or change it into an old sith Fleet of something?

And If I understand correctly, you are gonna keep the kiss moment, arent you?

Regarding the planet destroying power of the fleet: I think cutting it should be possible since the only demonstration of the power happens on Kijimi, right? Maybe the fleet has the power to destroy whole cities, but not whole planets, so only the last shot of the exploding planet would need to be cut.

And of course the following dialoge mentions the new power of the fleet. One solution might be to replace the word “planet” in Poe’s sentence, that every ship on the fleet “… has planet-killing powers” with maybe “city”? Or cut the sentence completely, but that might be hard to pull off, since the dialoge jumps so fast between the characters.

The following radio broadcast from the First Order should work nonetheless, because if the First Order has a whole fleet even with city destroying powers it might not be too far off to claim the end of the Resistance. But the payoff would be, that they don’t have a fleet full of little death stars, which in my opinion was pretty ridiculous to begin with.

I’m glad that all the material generated here is open-source. Even if I am a stick-in-the-mud about some of them, “my” version won’t be the only one.

Man, even when working on TLJ my life was so different and I had so much time to just take walks and think through this stuff. I can’t keep it all straight with this one! I am so glad you all are working so well together and look forward to turning in an amazing final product as a swan song. Getting to sit down and address things in my NLE is just like “okay, execute the plan and GET BACK OUT.” I’m just so low on about all the resources a project like this takes, time… mental power… software that works well in 2020… less-than-decade-old-laptop… energy… a movie I kind of like to begin with…

You’re all so kind. I mean, what the hell am I gonna end up contributing to my own edit??

That being said, I wish I could rent out a theater and have a nine-day viewing of this whole thing with y’all. Hmm… maybe to commemorate whenever this is complete some sort of streaming thing could be arranged.

Probably not, though, right? Eh.

Eh, it’s all good, Hal. You’ve already contributed a lot to fan editing community, and a lot of us have just given our own thoughts, so I think with this being the last film in the Skywalker saga, it’s a good time for us to contribute. You’re essentially acting as a moderator to our ideas, helping to steer the work in the right direction. We all have so many ideas, and even though they’ll be plenty of other edits, like krausfadr’s and Don’s (and much more I’m sure), it’s nice to have a concentrated effort to help motivate and execute ideas.

I definitely think it would be fun to do some kind of stream or commentary for this!

My problem with Rey killing her parents is it goes against the idea that she could ever convince herself they’re coming back.

Not really. It’s pretty obvious Rey has repressed childhood memories.

I agree. I had a lot of difficulty with an adult growing up in such a hostile environment as Jakku clinging to such a notion - seems logical to have turned her into the tougher get on with it kind. But she clings to this notion that they will come back as child might - young teen at best - there’s an emotional resonance to that that the movies never touched on. I was actually optimistic having watched TFA that this would amount to something more - her having killed her parents and repressed it would be that kind of trauma to make her cling to their return - she’s repressed memories of their death and needs them to come back desperately - it would mean she hadn’t done it. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. And it gives a real sense of struggle - until this point I considered her good / bad conflict to be, dare I say it, “Disney” at best (I shouldn’t have said that. Never set foot in the deep dark woods - the big bad mouse will be after you!..Sorry. Too much time with a toddler.)

“It’s over anakin. I have the high ground.” After Darth Maul, Obi Wan should have known better.

You know, that would be something. I have a toddler, so a streaming marathon is probably a no go for myself, and being such a newbie and certainly no editor, I’d feel a bit of a fraud - but your misconstrued comments about sir Ridley made me wonder if any of you awesome editors had ever met. Just perusing and having now seen a number of these edits have highlighted quite a close, like-minded community that probably work better together than most actual movie studios (well, obviously…). Might be nice to have a face to a name, especially given the climate.

Here’s a rough idea for changing the music in the final scene:

As nice as this is, I wouldn’t end the Saga on character centric theme. The Force Theme, as overused as it is, is perfect because it’s universal within the Saga.

Would mods be okay with streaming the Saga on Discord?

Regarding the earlier mention of a possible change in title, I’d like to suggest ‘A New Order’.

I’m not sure why but I dislike over using “… of the …” for the titles.

A New Order could refer to Rey being a new jedi with a different view, to her starting a new jedi order, or to Palpatine’s plan for a new order to replace the First Order.

I disagree, I see it as important for the forward-looking nature of the ending. We’re used to the force theme with the binary sunset, but now it’s Rey’s turn.

Yeah, it’s all about Rey forging her own path beyond the Jedi and Sith, which is what her character arc should be the whole trilogy. And the Force theme is so overused that any instance of it without some significant variation just feels bland.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:
I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX

+1. It’s the perfect end theme to juxtapose with Rey Skywalker.

Just Rey is fine. 😉

(Seriously if this annoys you I’ll stop talking about it in your thread. I just think a Rey nobody edit isn’t really a Rey nobody edit if she’s still Rey Skywalker in the end.)

Here’s a new pass! I downloaded a new 3D model of the falcon and brought it into cinema4D and recreated the flight path. After chatting with snooker, it turns out it’s the same model he’s using. I think his engines look better, though! So we’ll see what options we come up with!

Looks incredible! My only slight nitpick is that when it goes into hyperspace, the angle of the engine trail looks like a different path than the one it was traveling on. It makes it look less like it jumped forward into space and more like it shot upward as it jumped.

This is great! (as always!) But I think I sort of preferred your previous clip… 🤔

Also, has anybody else noticed that we see the very edge of the Lars homestead in this shot, so technically speaking, when the falcon passes over it the scale is incorrect. It should be much, much bigger. 😬

It doesn’t bother me. But I don’t see how that’s a punchy line to end on if her identity wasn’t an issue throughout the movie. I just don’t see myself going that route, but I’m know for conservative edits.

This is looking great. I actually think there isn’t enough engine glow in snooker’s. If anything I’d push the engine glow even more so that one doesn’t immediately notice any inadequacies with the model.

I agree.
This is another reason I like the previous clip a little better, I also think the movement doesn’t quite work as beautifully as it did in the other clip… But props to Poppasketti for giving it his all and trying something new! 😁 👍

It’s not her identity that’s the issue, it’s her own acceptance of that identity. Earlier in the film, there’s a scene where an alien child asks her what her family name is and she says her name is “just Rey” in a sort of sheepish, slightly forlorn tone. At the end of the last film, she came to the realization that she’s a “nobody from nowhere” but we can see in this scene that she’s still not quite comfortable with that newfound knowledge. It’s still a point of embrassment rather than pride. By taking it as a badge of honor at the end of the movie, she’s fully actualized and completed her arc, whereas taking the Skywalker name feels to me like it’s a step backward. It’s her clinging to an idealized version of the Skywalker legend as she did in the first half of the Last Jedi. She needs to be comfortable being “Just Rey” before she can be “Rey Skywalker”.

These are all just my opinions of course, but I cared a lot about this character and was disappointed with the direction they took in tieing her identity to other people, whether it’s the Skywalkers or the Palpatines. As we see in the prequels, the Skywalkers and the Jedi as a whole have a complicated, messy legacy and while Rey learned from and was inspired by them, she could have also been the start of something new.
