The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 62

I mentioned this on the other thread, but if someone had access to a really good camera and a green screen setup they could get a shot of Rey and Kylo (using cos-players) to use for the tatooine ending, all you would need is a wide, silhouette shot of them walking towards each other, embracing, and then watching the sunset.

This should cover all the bases:-

‘The Menacing Empire gets Revenge on The Jedi by Rising The Sith who Awaken to Strike Back in Force against The Skywalker who Returned in a Last Hope of Attacking The Phantom with New Clones’

Nailed it!

Lock it into the edit, Hal…we’re done here.

Wow, this discussion moves fast.

I was chiming in to say that I guess the “Empress Palpatine” line sets up a “I’m just Rey” payoff just fine. But if she’s going to be a Palpatine anyway, I’d still lean toward keeping the original line. I don’t really want to change the title or that aspect of it.

In a Rey Nobody edit, yes, there’s no issue and ‘Skywalker’ works well. I guess for both potential versions I would prefer to keep the original ‘Skywalker’ ending.

The final shot is weird, since she ignored the old lady and we see repurposed footage from the other desert planet earlier. The Falcon taking off would be a cool alternative, in any event.

There’s no good titles to crib… ‘Balance of the Force’ doesn’t quite resonate with the actual movie, and has ‘Force’ again.
‘Heir to the Jedi’ just sounds like ROTJ 2: Electric Boogaloo, and uses ‘Jedi’ a third time. If single word titles were appropriate, ‘Bloodlines’ would be a good choice.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I don’t know that I agree with the idea that the “just Rey” ending would only work in the context of a Rey Palpatine edit. Regardless of what we find her lineage to be, Rey’s arc has always been about self-acceptance and the realization that it doesn’t matter who her parents were: she can forge her own path forward. I think her becoming comfortable with the fact that she’s “just Rey” is equally poignant if her parents are nobodies. “Rey Skywalker” is just her latching on to new parental figures, which I don’t think shows any growth for the character. I do wish there was more in this movie to sell it though, since TLJ does all the heavy lifting.

I agree that ‘just Rey’ works without Rey Palpatine - having her say it in a proud manner rather than a sad one demonstrates she’s found herself - but only if you cut the shots of her pausing to stare at the ghosts. Otherwise it would feel like a conscious rejection of the Skywalkers, in my view. In a Rey Palpatine edit you could suggest she’s looking at them for support with her choice to reject her Palpatine lineage, but without that context, I don’t think it would feel right.

That’s why I think it would work well to have just Ben’s ghost, since Ben is the one who initially pushed her to confront the fact that she’s a nobody.

As for titles:
Duel of the Fates
Throne of Darkness
Secrets of the Sith
Secrets of the Empire
The Phantom Fleet
Rise of the Scavenger

I think the “just” part of it makes it about her rejecting alternative identities, particularly in the context of looking over at the Skywalkers, and at the end of a movie where she’s a Palpatine.

If she had said Just Rey without looking over, that might be better, but the emphasis on the line in general gives it thematic importance that only makes sense with something for her to reject.

edit: ooh i like the just ben idea

Here’s the current state of the crawl. Obviously some of it is temporary placeholders until I can get the wording right.

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Things aren’t good. The First Order has really gotten ugly and the sense of hope alluded to at the end of the last movie is alive but suffocated.

As Rey, sole heir to the Jedi, continues her training under the ailing General Leia Organa, their fledging Resistance gathers intel to forge a path to freedom.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren rages in search of his grandfather’s SITH WAYFINDER, desperate to end the spectre haunting him with threats to his rule…

‘Rise of the Scavenger’ is an absolute winner!!!

That would work since you’ve renamed your version of the prequels.

Here’s an update to the ending bits I’ve been playing with. Maybe these can work individually or be inspiration for other ideas.

I further tweaked the “just Rey” line, and added a more pronounced “t”.

I also added an updated version of the new end shot I’ve been messing with, which removes Rey and BB-8, instead having the falcon fly off into the binary sunset.

Finally, I tacked on the YouTube clip posted a few pages back that added Ben and Anakin force ghosts. I cropped out Anakin so you could see what the idea would look like. Not crazy about the head nod, but I think the idea of adding Ben will work.

Lookin’ really good! I like the idea of the falcon being the last shot…at the same time…
Has anyone considered Rey riding around in Lukes xwing instead? Obviously, that’s more work for someone with fx skills but it might satisfy those who are saying “the falcon belongs to Chewy!”.

That Falcon ending shot is essential. Poppa does it again!

Nah, I’d take the Falcon over the X-Wing.

I remain open, but I’m probably not going to change the ‘Rey Skywalker’ angle. I don’t want to do anything dodgy in the very final scene. My approach tends to be fairly conservative, after all.

If this was some Indy film then “just Rey,” sure. Rey calling herself Skywalker shows she has finally accepted the love of a real family (Leia is a Skywalker and her mother figure) and gives you that good feeling in the pit of your stomach. I don’t think changing it to just Rey is an improvement for this scene or as a finale as it lacks impact.

Conceptually I think including Ben works fine, but yeah, that particular clip of it isn’t quite polished to the degree that I think it would need to be included.

Very diplomatically said. I would have said Ben looks like a hobbit on his way to Mordor in the tests being released. TROS already has one hobbit, it doesn’t need another lol. I know Hal said Ben’s ghost looks ok but every idea here seems to go through the ringer except this one which is just going through as-is… no bueno. The footage used for Ben was chosen because he was smiling but the composition with added hair, etc increases the cartoonishness. The Luke and Leia force ghosts look slightly strange and Ben looks very weird. I would prefer to see if jonh has time to redo them all correctly.

While they all have Skywalker blood, Leia is first an Organa and Ben is a Solo. Luke was briefly a mentor to Rey, but never really a father figure, and their relationship was overall quite messy. I feel that the “Rey Skywalker” moment is largely unearned and emotionally manipulative. It makes sense from the perspective of the audience but falls apart when considering the internal logic of these characters. She only takes the name “Skywalker” because of what it means to us, not what it means to her, and the same can honestly be said about most of the nostalgia-baiting that happens in this movie…

But I’ll stop ranting. 😂 Obviously it’s Hal’s edit and he can do what he wants. I’m sure there will be multiple permutations delivered by different editors, and if not, I can always make my own!

I’ll change her line to “Rey Palpatine” then. She’ll say Rey in her voice and Palpatine in Ren’s robot voice for extra nostalgia.

Well to be fair, TLJ is almost an Indy film and this is a “sequel” to that (well it isn’t but it should be), Rey skywalker would have worked if she was a “nobody”, but the last skywalker being a poweful jedi related in someway to palpatine feels wrong
