Fuck it; clones whynot. It at least tries to offer an olive branch of logic and explanation.

The gloves are off when it comes to this movie.

Wow, this movie is so nonsensical it even broke Hal.

Cut the flashback entirely. The films are stronger if Rey’s parents were a couple of drunken assholes.

I agree, I like the angle where palpatines son could have been disgraced by everyone due to his fathers actions and became a drunk, maybe kylo can say something to alude to that, or maybe make him say “I didn’t lie to you, they sold you for drinking money” I think it keeps the palpatine thing but doesn’t entirely discount the last film

I’d personally keep Rey Palptine just cus I’d like to be able to watch this edit with any future content and not have to worry about canon contradictions cus I’m an annoying nerd.

But I agree with these guys about Rey’s parents staying drunkards. It’s weird that she’d say her parents were strong and then reject their name and take Skywalker. (Not an advocate of a “just Rey” ending though as the way “Rey Skywalker” was handeled was exactly how I wanted going into the movie.)

The hard thing about Rey realizing she is a nobody in TLJ, and that her parents had no special reason for leaving her, was that she had no purpose or destiny to follow. She is looking for her place in this universe, this story, and having a “special backstory” would’ve given her that. So in IX, Rey needs to forge her own destiny. Choose who she is going to be. Will she become a Sith? Become a Jedi? Begin a new order with Kylo Ren?

In a way that was probably 100% unintentional, Rey’s white outfit represents this tabula rasa aspect of her character. She’s a blank slate, but she’s weighed down by the burden of choice. She’s faced with her inner darkness and inner light, and she’s trying to find that balance within her, and I think that is empowering for people that are also having to go on these journeys of self-discovery in their own lives. Rey being a Palpatine is totally unnecessary to tell that story. If anything, it makes things easier for her because the evil lineage storyline has already been told with Luke and Vader. Plus, it’s more repetitive for us as an audience.

Great analysis. I’m not saying Rey Palpatine is good, because it’s not, it’s lazy and there’s a million better ways to write her story, but I just don’t think that Rey Palpatine can just be deleted from the film without creating massive collateral damage.

I was worried about the same thing, but after seeing some test clips from a few people, I actually think it is doable. Once people start sharing more of what they’ve worked on, I think we’ll actually be surprised by how easy it is to make the movie work without it.

I guess we’ll see though!

I am still too stubborn to be convinced that Rey Palpatine can be removed.

Rey will literally have no arc if you remove it.

Untrue. Her arc would be learning that it’s what you do not where you come from that decides who you are.

Yeah… Kind of stupid of me to say that… Sorry.

Anyway, I wish I hadn’t brought it up because I know such discussions aren’t allowed in threads like this.

I would say it’s best to just pick up where we last left off, whether I think Rey Palpatine can be cut or not is irrelevant anyway. Whatever Hal does, he’ll do it well.

I removed Rey Palpatine in my Workprint. And her arc still works. She’s battling her pull to the dark side, and she doesn’t have to be a Palpatine for that. She learns the worst news that her parents sold her to Palpatine to be killed. And also that she killed her own parents by crashing their ship.

I do think yellow lightning could still be cool in a Rey Palpatine version.

I was spending some time today figuring out how I could pull off yellow lightning for you, but it seems it would require tons of frame by frame masking as we are dealing with thin, blue and white elements against a blue and white background. I do however wonder if Skenera would be able to do it, after seeing what they had done with Leia’s saber!

What do you think Skenera? Is it as difficult as I say it is? 🤔

I’ll see what I can do.

Rey palpatine wouldn’t be so jarring if her parents truly sold her from drinking money, were bad parents or palpatine didn’t care about her, the parents being so lovely and leaving her just to protect her , feels too much like a retcon from TLJ (her being from an special linage is already a retcon).

“You have no place in this story, you are nothing” was made with the intention, to point out that her actions were what made her special and crucial the story, not her linage or relation with someone important, she being a “evil princess” is not only a bad copy of the OT with luke and vader (Rey doesn’t even know and care about palpatine in the previous 2 movies), it negates her character arc and agency.

The optimal way to fix TROS but still mantaining “canon” is to make or imply that Rey is related to palpatine in some way, but with neither her parents or palpatine caring about it, nothing of “take my throne!” or “she is special!” crap.

I don’t like how they sold her to protect her, it’s honesty much better if they just sold her fro the drinking money, maybe palpatines son was discarded and disgraced by everyone because he is the son of the emperor, he turns into a drunk and sells her, kylo Ren can say that in the scene on the ship by getting his line from the last Jedi “I didn’t lie to you, your parents sold you for drinking money”. Works in every aspect and it even makes his lines towards the end of the movie better, and I cheesy “my parents were strong” it would be more effective that everyone in her family was a bad person

Here is how I raised the stakes/impact to this Rey-Ren confrontation while removing the whole Palpatine killed your parents storyline.

Ren reveals Rey’s parents sold her to Palpatine. So not only did they not care, they were leaving her presumably to face a horrible death.

I think for this to work, Palpatine must want her alive. So Kylo would say “Do you know why palpatine always wanted you?”

Ren is under the impression that Palpatine always wanted her dead. He can only say what he knows/believes. It may in fact be the case Palpatine has alternate plans or lies about his intentions.

EDIT: It’s not revealed to anyone that Palpatine wanted her alive until cone-face spills the beans. At first I was going to do an edit where Paplatine’s complete intentions were clear from the beginning. But the story plays better if Ren believes he needs to kill Rey to satisfy Palpatine.

Or, maybe Rey’s father was discarded and disgraced by Palpatine himself. That’s pretty much what happened in Canon anyway (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Rey’s_father#cite_note-TROS_EE-0 second paragraph) but having Rey’s father turn out a bad person as well would indicate a vicious cycle of abuse to mirror the vicious cycle of Sith succession. In fact… that would probably be enough to justify waiting until the third movie to tell her about it.
Have Kylo say something like “Your father threw you away like trash, as did his father… Emperor Palpatine.”

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

That might be so, but for the audience it’s so convoluted that its better to keep it simple.

I’ve got two things to ask.

First, is there any way we can try to alter Palpatine’s motivation when Rey arrives on Exegol? Throughout the saga, he has always been interested in cheating death and immortality. Wanting Rey to kill him only so she can take over the new order and follow in his footsteps because she’s his granddaughter is way too out of character. Maybe alter the scene so that he is trying to make her give in to the Dark Side like he tried to do with Luke in Return of the Jedi.

The second thing that I was going to ask is if it’s possible to maybe create early work prints of an edit of Episode IX to maybe help get a good view on what the edit could be about. Maybe it’s too early and we should just continue to work with just clips, but how would anyone feel about this?

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

I’m fine with Palpatine telling Ren to kill the girl even though he may have other plans for her alive. I don’t lowbrow my edits.

EDIT: The better choice would be to get rid of the whole “make the sacrifice” shit at the end. But that’s easier said than done since it would remove the entire impact of Rey force passing the saber to Ren. Also while editing I did tinker with cutting off the word dead so Ren says “Do you know why the Emperor’s always wanted you?” And the results sucked. Someone might be able to get it to work but they would need to find a sentence spoken by masked Ren that he ends with the word “you” in just the right cadence.
