Starting to DIF the 2019 variation comparing to the be all end all 2004 variation.

Full results of SW posted at:

Or review in the Shot List: (adding the things found by doubleofive, yotsuya, etc. anything I can verify)

Will start to give an overview of the results with examples.
Note: the 2019 pics do not have proper HDR so think twice about typing about any color issues
In an ideal world the DIF results would look mostly like this:

In this example the framing is almost perfect between versions. Multiple parts of the image are returning black as if both versions have the same color.

But most of the 2004-2019 DIF look like this:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.05.44.15).jpg
The white edges show how the image has been reframed.

And at what point is the reframing done on purpose?

On the subject of reframing, the new scan may have a different pixel aspect ratio for certain shot. In the next image the left side of frame is aligned between variations (3po is dark), but as you travel right, everything gets further off (the white borders get wider):

And some shots are zoomed in or out:

Not sure why you’d want to cut more of R2 off. This shot is part of a wipe so maybe the zoom was for the next shot:

This next example looks like a color change maybe done to enhance the perception of depth for the 3D release which didn’t happen. Look at the color of the top wing of the Sky Hopper to the left of 3po. Notice how much of the DIF image is black except for the Sky Hopper. This happens consistently in this sequence about 24 shots were changed. Here’s a second example:

See the center of frame in the DIF image has the same light value return. In the 2004 the top of the Sky Hopper wing is a much darker color.

For 2019, a slight pan was added to the find 3po’s arm shot. In the first image you can see the offset between variations, but a few frames later 3po’s arms between variations align.

Added Glows. To compensate for the crushed black, I think shots in the 2004 had an artificial glow bubbled around key elements: Luke’s got one here at the Sandcrawler:

Here’s a glow in the cantina, might be for Bo Shek:

Also in the cantina, Luke got one and this one fades out as Luke walks down the steps:
