I think it works well enough. The “determined to unlock the secrets of his former master’s power” is directly addressed and paid off in the opening exchange bewteen Kylo and Palpy. “At last. Snoke trained you well.” “I killed Snoke, I’ll kill you.” “My boy, I made Snoke…”

Right away, secret unlocked.

As for why he needed his grandfather’s sith wayfinder to figure out this particular puzzle, I think it’s implied that this is the latest in a string of clues that he has been hunting to unlock this particular secret. Maybe there could be a subtle way to reinforce this notion in the crawl.

I decided to do my own take on Hal’s crawl:

Luke Skywalker has ignited a resurgence of hope across the
galaxy. To slow the flames of rebellion, the First Order has
scattered and isolated the brave.

As REY, sole heir to the Jedi, continues her training under
the ailing General Leia Organa, their fledgling Resistance
prepares for an inevitable uprising.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader KYLO REN is haunted by the whispers
of a dark presence promising him enough power to crush his
opposition once and for all. . . .

It would be interesting if we could solidify the connection by creating a new vision shot of Snoke standing over the stone wayfinder chest that could be inserted into one of Kylo’s visions.

You could take the shot of Snoke in TLJ when he says, “A new… Vader.” Recolor his robe gray and change the background to a pink/gray sky to match Mustafar. And by intercutting between this shot and the stone chest insert, you could imply Snoke once stood before this relic, either on his own quest to find the secrets of the Sith, or to lay the breadcrumbs that Vader’s grandson will eventually follow.

I feel like the mix could probably be finessed, although I’m not much an audio guy.

How does it sound with “relics of a bygone era” just made a bit louder in the mix? Some of the problem might be tone but it also just sounds a bit softer than everything around it. I also feel like it could be sped up slightly with the pitch corrected to match.

Hal, I remember you or someone else here thought of changing the music that plays over the ending Rey Skywalker/Binary Sunset scene, as to avoid repeating the Force theme across three movies. Have you though of putting some version of Rey’s theme instead? I believe it might be the most fitting, because it reaffirms Rey’s identity above all else, and is very much the central musical theme of the sequel trilogy. Not the full theme, but some snippets of it, like that transition between the Force and Rey’s motifs. If you plan to end the scene with a fade to black, maybe the peaceful version of the SW main theme that plays at the end of the track could could fit better instead of a more bombastic piece, as it has much of a “final farewell” feel to it.

This is some great stuff, I think if you made them seem more in the distance (maybe add some blur for distance) and only appear with the lightning strikes and then disappear in the shadows, it would sell the effect better

This is phenomenal. THIS is what I was expecting from the final act of the movie.
Could I use this in my edit? Needless to say, I’d credit you…
