Looking at the 35mm shot, I think the shot can use a bit more saturation, contrast and warmth.

In regards to the second test clip, it would be nice if we got some deep rich royal blues, and maybe a bit less desaturation. The first test clip was nearly perfect. Also I think the blackness of space should be solid black.

Honestly I prefer the original grading more, although that might change in motion.

I think your previous grade was better, but I think overall that the original grade was perfect.

Rendering another preview, this time of the podrace. I’ve since done a major revision of the grade again, and I’m very happy with the results, though I find the colors of this section could really use a shot by shot grade, which is outside the intentions of this initial release, but will for sure be taken into account for the later releases.

Here’s the preview:

And here’s another test of the AI sharpening without grain.

tpm enhanced

Makes it look almost like native 4k.

Seems overly waxy to me, honestly. But that very well could be due to the excessive DNR applied to the source you’re working from…

I agree. The sharpening is very impressive in some areas, but the face has lost all its texture. I checked the D+ stream, and it looks to me to be an effect of the AI sharpening/DNR. It might also be, that the increased sharpness makes the inherent DNR of the source stand out more, because there’s little texture in the face to begin with, while other areas are really sharp now, creating a dissonance between different areas of the frame. Either way the 19SE source looks more natural to my eyes.

The preview clips look great!

Some of the heavier DNR still looks a bit too waxy even with the grain, but this is overall a great improvement.

Indeed, Tantive3+1’s proposal looks very nice, but is moving away from the theatrical version.

Well to be fair, so is this entire project with AotC and RotS. It isn’t so much a restoration of the film versions shown in theaters, it’s an edit that makes them look like film, an entire third version.

A Theatrical Cut on TPM with this version as the base would be the perfect combo.

I am genuinely looking forward to Attack of the Clones this way, because I have a huge soft spot for that movie, but always thought it looked too smooth and shiny.

That’s exactly what I was thinking!

My biggest “compromised purism” in Star Wars is wanting to conform the BR cut of TPM to the theatrical cut - that is, keep the editing of the theatrical cut exactly, but with all the visual updates of the BR (CGI Yoda, mainly).

It’s the only one where something like that would outright replace any official version forever for me.

But Creepy Puppet Yoda™ looks infinitely better than CGI Yoda. CG Yoda constantly has his head at a downward angle and looks up at the people he’s talking to only with his eyes, and he lacks the little bit of expression that CPY had left. Screw consistency, I prefer a decent but weird puppet that looks nothing like the character over awkward CGI that still looks nothing like the character. 😛

The puppet looks a lot chipper than the CGI one. A theatrical version is what I would like to see, puppet and all.

Did some more work on the grade for TPM today, still frustrated with it, but making progress.

Is there any place with a scan of a theatrical print or more images of it? I’m really curious what the contrast levels should be for a lot of the scenes, as well as the overall white balance to the image. In my current grade, some scenes look horribly flat while other times the blacks look crushed. Not to mention, my current grade is making white balance differences between scenes more apparent which I’m not sure is more accurate to the theatrical presentation or not.

I will say my current grade in some parts looks eerily similar to the new 4K version of 2001: A Space Odyssey in terms of colors, which I think means I’m on the right track.

Overall though, I think it’s important for me to establish a blanket grade for each film, not only for first releases, but as a base for scene by scene and shot by shot grading for the future releases.

A 35mm scan is in the works at the moment. I believe ZigZig would be the person to get in touch with about that.

The scanning process is currently locked down in a Parisian lab due to Covid-19…
But I’d be happy to share with emanswfan the rough scan of reel #4 (which was done 2 times with 2 different lenses).

Emanswfan, if you’re interested, please feel free to PM me.
