The Final Order Revealed:
https://vimeo.com/409356850
(rough, as always)

  • New music
  • Extended reveal a bit (pushed back when Palpatine starts talking)
  • Cut out Rey being “not who she seems”
  • Cut to Rey meditating after, instead of the Falcon

Absolutely amazing! The addition of the Final Order theme really helps, and I like how you added a few seconds of footage by shifting Palpatine’s dialogue. I’m kind of iffy on the transition to Rey, but at the same time I’m not sure what you could improve about it.

Seamless editing (though the transition to Rey is a little abrupt - opportunity for a wipe?).

What’s your plan for Palpatine’s plan in the movie? Maybe I’m just slow but I never worked out why he asked Kylo to kill Rey. He clearly doesn’t actually want her dead; he wants her on Exegol so he can ritualistically bodysnatch her or whatever. What if Kylo had run Rey through and come back to claim his new fleet? Was Palps just banking on Kylo caring too much about Rey? Palpatine’s prequel plans were hardly airtight either, but I don’t really see what he actually wants from Kylo. Once they’re together he uses the dyad - was that his plan all along?

I would suggest a wipe transition to the rey scene.

The transition is something I was curious about. One of those things where you’re not sure if it only works because you’ve been looking at it so long. Will look into alternatives as it seems like it’s not working for people.

It’s a tricky thing because the obvious solution is have Palpatine tell Kylo to bring him Rey, but it makes Kylo’s story a lot less interesting. I suspect this is why they changed it to be the way it is. It’s pretty convoluted, but yeah there’s probably a couple different explanations, and arguably it’s on par with his 4D chess reverse psychology prequel plans. If someone can come up with an alternative I’m ears, but like I said the only one I can figure lessens Kylo’s story and agency.

I would maybe change “kill the girl” to something along the lines of “the girl is the only one standing in your way” to communicate that Palpatine doesn’t want Rey dead as much as he wants to make Kylo THINK that he’s got a chance of becoming Emperor himself. I don’t know if that makes sense, it took way too long for me to put into words. Basically, I’m saying that leaving the line vague might make it clearer to the audience that Palpatine’s doing another 4D chess reverse psychology plot.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

When Palpatine senses Kylo’s turn to the light, he tells Pryde that “the princess of Alderan has disrupted his plans” surely this is a remnant of the original script where his plan A was for kylo and Rey to take the throne.

I really enjoyed this even though I am not a strong advocate for Rey being changed to a nobody. However, I understand why many want this change and have loved viewing all your edits so far. Quick question, perhaps you have already answered this before. Do you plan on adding in Palpatine’s “Fortnite Speech” in this edit? I really like it and though this may be the scene to overlay it as we see the sith fleet rise from the ice.

I think this might be the edit I am most excited about. My heart broke when they walked back on the whole Rey Nobody thing and I think your ideas could really bring that storyline back to the life.

I noticed you mentioned adding a score to the Death Star fight and a few people have thrown around the Duel of the Fates. I’ve seen a few fan edits of that scene that use both Duel of the Fates and Battle of the Heroes. Have you considered this?

I can think of a solution, but it would take someone providing VFX work again, and some good old fashioned “something out of nothing” editing work in keeping with Star Wars history.

“I am all the sith.”
“And I…”
(helicopter noises, music rising)
Rey’s hand, waiting for the lightsaber, catches it.

At this point, I’m suggesting either looping forward/reverse that shot of her holding the saber JUST long enough to give a tiny beat before you layer in “I’m Nobody” or “I’m no one” OVER the shot of the saber in the hand. To punctuate it, she ignites the saber BACK THERE, and then IMMEDIATELY swings the saber up out of frame from that shot rapidly, and you cut just as rapidly to the camera pulling back as the saber comes up into frame.

But you’d need to

  1. extend her holding it just a tad through tricky
  2. animate a saber igniting
  3. animate the saber coming up and out of frame (or at least starting to move in that direction)

In order to create enough continuity to cut straight from the saber moving up and to the left to match with the reverse shot as the saber is coming up and from the right while the camera pulls back.

I guess the only other way to get it to work exactly the way you want is to establish at some point earlier that these two can and will communicate telepathically in their final duel (add reverb and weird effects not unlike the Force Skyping) and then you have to creatively edit so that their dialog is playing over scenes where their mouths are decidedly not moving - and then you can basically rearrange their words wherever you want, cut to close-ups of their eyes or hands whenever you need it, etc…

Well it’s a tricky thing to use because of the music. I also think the idea of a ‘broadcast’ is weird and I don’t really like it. Ultimately I don’t think including it is necessary.

I tend to think of that piece as being more specifically tied to Obi-wan and Anakin, so probably not.

The theatrical TROS is a film I have mixed feelings about, and I like that this edit will continue on the strengths of TLJ while removing scenes that pander to those that didn’t like TLJ.

I don’t think that’s a good idea. It would just change the line from imitating Endgame to imitating Return of the King:

Witch King: No man can defeat me!
Eowyn: And I am no man.

Nobody’s imitating anyone else here, it’s just common movie talk. I’m sure it’s been done hundreds of times.

I know, but a lot of people say that “I am all the Jedi” is an imitation of Endgame, including the person who made that suggestion, so I was just providing a counterpoint.

That’s fine, my comment wasn’t really directed at you in particular so much as the conversation as a whole.

After Palpatine bids Kylo to “become what [his] grandfather, Vader, could not,” would it work to cut to the original last shot of the scene?

There’d be more time for a wipe transition, and it’d imply Palpatine arrogantly things he’s “got” him, like he has the hooks in his jaw ala Anakin in ROTS, but with a touch of being off the money ala Luke in ROTJ.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I think this is necessary. With Dom’s current cut it kinda implies that Rey is “what [Kylo’s] grandfather” could not become.

It’s an idea, but I’m not sure it’d work. Feels like it’d be weird for Palpatine to laugh right after telling Kylo to do something. Also I like focusing more on Kylo. I’m going to see if I can finagle it without having to resort to that.

I didn’t really see it that way, but wouldn’t that work anyway? Arguably that’d be an implication to strive for.

Death Star Duel/Ben and Leia:
https://vimeo.com/414119429

Changes

  • Swapped in the Force theme for Leia sensing Ben
  • Added Duel of the Fates
  • Cut out Finn’s last “REEEEEEYYY!”
  • Added a few frames using shots from the trailers
  • Drastically extended and re-scored Leia contacting Ben

As always keep in mind this is rough.

Author
Time
 (Edited)

Excellent changes, really loved the new theme for Leia calling Ben.
The use of the drums throughout the fight is also subtle yet very effective.
What do you think of cutting some of Mazes exposition?
Keeping “to reach her son will take all the strength she has left” while axing “Leia knows what must be done”.

Nice work! The rescored moments really work, especially the instrumental Duel of the Fates. I would like if you improved Leia’s added “Come home” line though. Right now it sounds like one word.

Oolala! Some of that music works suspiciously well… Super awesome work.

I’ll “third” refining Leia’s added line.

It’s probably been mentioned already but what’s your plan with Leia holding Han’s medal? I didn’t notice her holding it the first time I saw the movie, and after noticing it in subsequent viewings it still looked dumb. Especially if Chewy receiving Han’s medal at the end is being cut.

Author

Even if you’ll let me and I end up using this sequence as you’ve edited it, I’d still include the medal shot, personally. But I don’t plan to remove it being given to Chewie.
