There could have been more of a personal connection with the climax if Kylo did the “Sith Sacrifice/Power Transfer” and it was a battle between Kylo(Sith Avatar) and Rey. That would have done it.

What if Kylo’s voice could be dubbed over Palpatine’s but saying the same lines?

In this scenario, when Palp draws energy from Ben and Rey, only Rey survives, and she hears Palp talking with Ben’s voice.

Maybe the personal aspect could be more about who/what Rey is defending rather than attacking. . . . something that reminds us of what she is fighting for, like her friends and newfound family.

You mean . . . you mean . . . she’s not fighting what she hates, but saving what she loves??? 😆

Yoda and luke helps rey…next, obi wan and anakin

I think the effects are great, however it didn’t quite work for me because instantly recognized the footage from ESB and TLJ.

You could use a deleted scene from TLJ for Luke.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

I just wanted to add my thoughts to the mix. Nice reading here anyways, good ideas, but…

… to me the only way to let’s say finish the Skywalker saga in three short bulletpoints.

  • Luke needs to survive Episode VIII.
  • Rey needs to be Luke’s lost daugther, that was hinted at in TFA and I still feel Kasdan and Abrams were going that way until VIII, Johnson and Kennedy derailed everything.
  • Luke is at least an important supporting character in IX, Rey learns she is a Skywalker (the flashback could show Luke), Palpatine is still the bad guy wanting Revenge and in the end Rey owns the Skywalker name because she simply is a Skywalker and Ben should either save / help Rey and / or survive.

I don’t have a real idea how to fix that, but Deepfakes, alternate footage of Hamill and some major retconning within the movies VIII and IX seem somehow possible with the given technology and the fans’ commitment.

Just my quick thoughts.

I actually would like this, for the same reason I’d like Ben to survive. I think Luke deserves more time to redeem himself, rather than just die from over-exertion after doing one good thing. This isn’t really feasible through editing though.

  • Rey needs to be Luke’s lost daugther, that was hinted at in TFA and I still feel Kasdan and Abrams were going that way until VIII, Johnson and Kennedy derailed everything.

I absolutely hate this idea, for two reasons:

  1. Rey is more interesting as a nobody. If Rey just turned out to be another Skywalker, it would make the sequel trilogy seem boring and cliche. It’s much more ironic for a complete nobody to be the hero this time.
  2. There is zero evidence that JJ originally planned for Rey to be a Skywalker. All evidence, even before the release of TLJ, points to Rey being a nobody from the start. Terrio was the one who derailed it with his stupid Rey Palpatine reveal.

Because of that, I think Rey Nobody is the only way to go for a fan edit of the sequel trilogy. It’s by far the most interesting and thematically coherent option.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:

Rey is a nobody being the best option, well I disagree. The Skywalker saga needs to be about Skywalkers otherwise it still makes no sense to me. This is the hero’s journey, it spans generations of a family, classic storytelling and that is what made Lucas’ original work. The thing is, Johnson and Kennedy wanted to take turns, be radical (or stupid), but that is not what Star Wars is about. Sure there are unexpected revelations here and there, but they all fall within the confines of the classic stories, legends and fairy tales. So Rey needs to be a Skywalker since Ben is the failed Skywalker there needs to be the hero, the good Skywalker, mirroring the OT and the PT. It rhymes and that is what Lucas wanted and said in interviews before. Rey being a nobody does not make any sense within this context, at least not to me. It would undo a lot of issues within VIII and IX. It might not be clever, unexpected twist, but was this sequel trilogy ever about a twist or turning everything upside down in the first place?!

Luke needs to survive, done by Ivan Ortega in his edit, working more or less well. Rey needs to be the lost daughter, we just need a good reason why and need to show it. The ending of IX needs to be bigger, with force ghosts and with Rey realizing her place in all of this as the last Skywalker to finally end Palpatine and avenge her father and restore the balance once and for all. Her being a nobody is just pushing the identity politics agenda of Kennedy and Rey being a Palpatine might sound interesting, but it just makes the whole story of Anakin an Luke useless.

Thanks for the feedback of course, it is noted and respected!

Okay, so while I do actually agree with you on Rey Nobody being lame, keep in mind Ivan’s “plan” isn’t feasible. Yes Luke can reasonably survive TLJ, but he can’t reasonably be involved in TROS. Maybe it would be possible to insert him instead of Leia on Aljon Koss and say a few lines in a voiceover. But him doing anything other than standing on Aljon isn’t workable.

All due respect Starkiller, but I found it cringe-inducingly obvious that TFA was setting up Rey as an important person. Evidence -

  1. When BB8 says his identity is a secret, Rey says “me too”. Supposing that’s sarcasm, there’s no need to say that and confuse the audience.
  2. When Kylo is told a girl helped BB8, he asks “what girl?” as if there’s a girl on Jakku that is important. I guess he was just curious?
  3. Maz asks Han, “who’s the girl”. Why would they cut on this when all Han says is “idk just some person lol”.
  4. Kylo and Snoke both seem confused in TFA as to how Rey is so powerful, suggesting lineage.

So for me personally, I’d have been fine with Rey Nobody had RJ directed TFA. My problem doesn’t have to do with the heroes’ journey, even though I can understand why that’s an issue for some folks. My problem comes from Rey Nobody conflicting so much with TFA, where Rey Palpatine actually fits into the puzzle quite smoothly.

There’s no supposing, she’s being sarcastic, there’s no other way to read the line. That’s the whole point, and there shouldn’t be any confusion as to what they’re telling the audience.

Yeah, why not.

Why show him say that if we know that’s all there is to say?

  1. Kylo and Snoke both seem confused in TFA as to how Rey is so powerful, suggesting lineage.

I don’t think they seem very surprised at all, just intrigued.

I know there have been edits where Luke doesn’t die at the end of TLJ, but there’s really no way to explain his absence in IX if he is actually alive still. The effort might be to try to improve his characterization, but I think it would actually make him look worse. And can’t shoot or cgi new scenes with Luke in any feasible way. Maybe you could put TLJ scenes of Luke into TROS, but I don’t think it would be very seamless.

I think the fixation on lineage and bloodline is exactly why I personally felt she didn’t need to be related to anyone.

Even if you believe Star Wars is just supposed to be about the Skywalkers, there’s nothing wrong with having the last trilogy be about the influence of that family and their story. That’s still ostensibly about them.

Rey Nobody, a girl who becomes a hero from being inspired by their legend, is a meaningful way to cap off their legacy. It’s a lot better than a daughter inheriting her father’s responsibility and just seeing it through. (also why Kylo/Ben not seeing his through was interesting!)

Rey then still stays almighty powerful and there is no reason for it if she is no one. The hero’s journey does not work that way in my opinion. She becomes a deus ex machina to destroy Palpatine because the Skywalkers weren’t able to do it in the first place even though they did in Episode VI.

The thing is, if Palpatine would have been integral in VIII already and Luke or Ben involved in striking Palpatine down once and for all it would have worked somehow, but Ben is reduced to a joke in the end saving the most important girl in the galaxy that didn’t earn anything because she has no real journey in VIII and IX, not on the scale of Luke or Anakin. To me it still is too much identity politics involved instead of a solid character arc.

I mean I really like Daisy Ridley and she is doing her best and she mostly delivers in her performance. But the underlying agenda, the screenplay Johnson put on paper in VIII just don’t make the story worthwhile. I hoped VIII would answer some stuff but it only derailed everything giving Abrams nothing left, so he and Terrio came up with, Snoke was a clone, Palps was involved all the way and Rey is Palpatine’s clone daugther /granddaughter and Lucasfilm is retconning even that because they or some people at least figured out that they messed up and even the identity politics are not working at all.

We need all the available Mark Hamill footage of Star Wars and other movies in 1080p, movies like Slipstream, Time Runner and so forth, there might be material for the flashback scenes and maybe even stand-ins, deepfakes and so forth. But again, I’m only just starting to play with the idea.

In fairness, it’s not just that his criticisms are bad, but there’s no way to accomplish what he wants. In which case my suggestion is legitimately the best thing he can do.
