I personally would say that the droid assembly line sequence in AOTC is the worst sequence ever to appear on screen in a Star Wars film. It’s long, bland, inconsequential, and ultimately completely forgettable. Do you agree? What would you say is the worst? The Ewok movies don’t count, the Clone Wars animated movie or TV shows don’t count, the Holiday Special doesn’t count, and Rebels doesn’t count. We’re only counting the live action films: episodes I-VIII and R1.

The droid assembly line scene was no worse than the trash compactor scene in A New Hope. Both signify the “Belly of the Beast” stage in Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.

They both signify the same thing, sure, but the scene in AotC is indeed the worst/most cringe inducing scene in the saga. The trash compactor scene isn’t bad or cringey at all.

To be fair, opinions are subjective. Luke used that quote when Kylo said a wrong fact.

Nevertheless I disagree that the assembly line and trash compactor are equivalent. First, the trash compactor feels like there’s real tension. I think it has to do with the simplicity of it all. No one is shooting or flying around them, just some great editing showing the walls slowly close in on themselves. There’s so much going around on Geonosis it becomes chaotic. Anakin is in trouble and Padmé is in trouble and Threepio is in trouble. Lucas tried to replicate the sequence but overdid it.

The worst moment was Rose preventing Finn from sacrificing himself to save the Resistance so she could kiss him and say the most cliched line ever written: “That’s how we’re gonna win: Not by fighting what we hate but by saving what we love.”

It was a play on the famous line by the English writer G.K. Chesterton in 1911

“The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”

You have to be joking here. The two are nothing alike. The droid scene is riddled with terrible slapstick and comes across in no way threatening. Completely the opposite to the Trash compactor scene.

but the worse scene for me in ANY Star Wars film HAS to be the balcony scene in ROTS.

I thought Rose’s saving what we love quote was based on this bit from Irvin Kershner during the making of Empire?

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

I think Rian has said something to the effect of he wrote it before he read that book, but took Kersh’s words as some sort of validation he was on the right track. But I can’t find that tweet right now so maybe I’m making it up.

That does sound familiar. I’m sure you’re right. It’s interesting how things like that happen. Nothing happens by accident.

Regardless of whether the line works or not I think it’s very poorly timed during a life-or-death moment. The delivery of ‘saving you, you dummy’ would be far snappier by itself.

Agreed. I see what Johnson was going for, but it doesn’t mesh well with Holdo and Luke’s sacrifices. Everyone I’ve spoken to defending Rose’s intervention have mentioned Finn’s plan was futile, worthless… Rose just telling him his plan wouldn’t work would have been a major improvement.

I thought it was pretty obvious he wouldn’t make it, but I guess explicitly saying it wouldn’t hurt. Then again, that’d be telling, not showing.

Author

I totally disagree. The movie set everything up in a way to show that he’d clearly make it. That’s what made Rose saving him very frustrating, and still does.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious (to me) that he’d have succeeded in destroying the weapon, but at the cost of his life. Sacrificing himself to save everyone else and all that. Her saving him was extremely selfish, but somehow still depicted as the right thing to have done?

They definitely should have done something more to make it clear Finn either wouldn’t have made it to his target, or that if he had it wouldn’t have made a difference.

The speeder should really have lost a wing or spiralled out of control, which would then require that last second crashing manoeuvre by Rose. I mean it’s obvious he can’t make it because the ship is melting but y’know…

If we’re counting Special Edition changes, I would say the Jedi Rocks dance number. Truly awful.

The entirety of Last Jedi for me. I have been no fan of Disney’s productions so far but that was just…not at all SW.

Fair enough. You are entitled to feel that way. Lots of fans hate C-3PO’s antics. I think other scenes in Attack of the Clones are far more cringeworthy, and I would not even rank it as the most cringeworthy episode. In fact, when I saw Attack of the Clones in theater at age eight, the droid factory scene was my favorite. Not that my childhood self was the world’s best film critic.

Don’t forget that it does not mesh well with Paige’s sacrifice at the beginning of The Last Jedi, either.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.
