OMG
The Sword in the Stone and The Black Cauldron are the best restorations Disney have done in a really long time.
I hope the all Pre-CAPS movies get the same treatment when released in 4K

People need to stop sharing that “My moonization” channel around. His comparisons are awful. The colors are completely incorrect in every one of his videos.

Agree. There’s always a green tint in his videos that’s not there originally.

Yeah, I agree that his/her gradings are not correct, but the details, grain and atmosphere are top notch

It isn’t cropped, it’s matted. The 2013 Blu-ray was matted and cropped on all four sides compared to the open matte Gold Classic Collection/45th Anniversary Edition DVD and the matted Disney+ stream.

Disney needs to start giving other companies a chance to restore their films because of their botched jobs.
Oh, and give the audience the original theatrical cuts of films and not the edited versions, that really crappy for them not to.

As best as I can remember reading, all their films from the 60s to the (80s-00s?) were made so they could be shown matted to widescreen in theaters but also be shown open-matted on television, something that obviously included videotapes when they became popular. I’m sure BOTH versions are valid by design since Disney knew there’d be different ways an audience can view them.

This may be unpopular of me to say but I think MOST of the Disney restorations look great. Granted, I’ve seen the one running away scene in Cinderella, screenshots of the bad Sword in the Stone, and the alligator/blue bird scene in Lion King, coupled with the fact that I hadn’t watched most of the films between my “little kid” and “young adult years”, but I like how they look. The older cel and paper films look like animation of the era. I know Disney removed some of the mistakes (like paint variations and cel mis-alignment), but they didn’t go so far to make them look like… well, like the CAPS made films. Granted, they should be taken to task for bad restorations but there’s two points I want to make:

1.) Disney+'s version of The Sword in the Stone shows they know when they screwed up and will possibly use the move to 4K as a chance to fix mistakes.

2.) Comparisons to theatrical prints may not tell the whole story. Granted, the filmmakers may’ve made choices based on how it’ll look on a theatrical print many generations down but that has to be weighed against the fact that the print a fan today maybe looking at today has aged and might no longer look like how it did when first made. Also, prints were made to be trashed after the theater run, so I can’t imagine them being the best representations compared to the negatives and interpositives Disney would’ve been looking at. Again, it might not be the best approach for Disney to match the films to the artwork in their archives without thinking of how they would’ve looked after many stages in copying but I doubt we can judge by prints. For all we know, what we’re seeing now may be what the artists were trying for.

Hello, I am looking for the first French dubbing of some Disney, in particular:
Pinocchio
Bambi
Sleeping Beauty
Alice
Snow white

These dubbing are only available on 35 or 16 mm copies.
If anyone has these copies, sharing these soundtracks will make a lot of people happy 😃

Just found out something… Although the 2017 BD release of Bambi restored the original RKO logo (older digital releases had variations of the Disney castle), it seems the audio track is different from the 97’ LD. The score is longer in the BD. Does anyone here have access to a film print or know which one is more faithful to the original 1942 release?

Is that second screenshot from the DVD that comes with the Blu-ray or the Big Top Edition? The 60th Anniversary Edition, if I remember correctly, has a more filmic-looking transfer.

There’s a guy at blu-ray.com claiming that Robin Hood on Disney+ doesn’t have DNR. Could anyone check if it’s the same transfer as the BD?

That’s unfortunate 😦 Thanks for the help.
I think they’ll only update the movies when new 4k masters are available.

I remember what’s been missing from Toy Story lately. That CG Disney castle against a blue background at the beginning of the movie, which zoomed out to reveal the wallpaper with clouds on it in Andy’s room, now replaced with the regular Disney and Pixar logos. What else is now missing from the movie?

People have been complaining that in Lilo and Stitch on Disney+, they changed the dryer to some cabinet with a pizza box. They’re also complaining for one of the live action films (not animated), Splash, made by Touchstone Pictures, a Disney label, that they used questionable CG to censor Darryl Hannah’s rear end. Not to worry because the movie exists on archive.org here:

https://archive.org/details/Splash1984

It appears based on the upload date, the movie has been put on the website with the timestamp 2016-06-06 03:56:38, 3 years before Disney+.

What other stuff is missing from the films that get put on Disney+? This looks like one case where physical media and unfortunately piracy wins.

That Lilo & Stitch change is not new. It was changed for the UK way back then.

Is there a feasible way to collect all of these films? Are all of these even available in digital form? I’d love to experience the films in a format as close to the original as possible. It’s a shame Disney was okay with altering some of their films so much. Dumbo being a notable example.

The Splash digital alteration has had many articles in the past week. It’s really badly done for no good reason.
Lilo and Stitch looks like she’s hiding in an oven now, which seems worse to me.

I don’t know when the opening of Toy Story changed. That’s news to me. It could be with the new BD releases, since we know they made changes to Toy Story 2 as well around that time.
