I’d rather just have it subtly glow, or even just a sound effect and gentle vibration to it or something, than have it be cut in the exact shape of the wreckage as seen from the position they conveniently happen to be in.

Just add an alien voice to 3PO (or change it somehow) and subtitles so that he clearly states that the Wayfinder is in the Emperor’s throne room.

Any of the above would work. And it doesn’t matter that it is not ancient, it just doesn’t work for anything other than an 80s nostalgia trip (which im all for, except for an actual important plot point). The convenience of standing in the correct position is one issue, as well as the why? Why would a Palpatine ally (or anyone else) put a wayfinder in a fallen wreckage, create a dagger to match up with the wreckage and hide the dagger. The why for something like this is important, otherwise it is just terrible lazy writing (which of course…).
I could get on board with sith sorcery allowing the dagger to shape this way…but it’s a leap…

Again, even that’s not necessary.

Not necessary, but if we’re going for gold…then again, sometimes less is more…

Thanks poppasketti, I’ve extended the starfield by duplicating and mirroring the frame on each side, then I removed the stars with the Dust & Scratches effect and I added new stars on a separate layer with the blend mode set to Screen, in order to hide the symmetry.

To get the rotation right, I’ve tried to cancel the existing rotation, so I could get the values for the angle and the anchor point, then I added a rotation in the opposite direction with a little bit of camera shake.

Extended lightspeed skipping shot: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1MUS1TkWp0IBaB72N3ehDH9ziHC-uLKy3

Well done!
In addition to that, it might also work to use the Falcon hyperspace wormhole shot from this teaser:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adzYW5DZoWs
As it was never used in the film. It also ends with a white screen, which might be easier to transition into Rey’s training instead of the black screen.
I’ll probably mock this idea up so stay tuned!

If you could make the dagger have a blinking eye and say “find me” in the Emperor’s voice, then I’d like it.

Okay, honestly I’ve kinda had it with working on this scene, but whatever, here we go… So in this new attempt to extend Mustafar, I’ve taken on board your very kindly worded critisism and replaced the very low quality BBC documentry footage with more appropriate ash-ridden forest footage. I also rescored the scene and altered colours as well as keeping the TLJ deleted shot of Kylo.
In all seriousness, it’s either this or nothing. If you don’t like the look of this, then I say to either keep it as it as or open on Exogol. There has been talk of using RO footage, I think this isn’t the best idea as we should probably stray away from repeating the same footage between films. But hey, if Poppasketti can erase Krennic’s shuttle, then why not?

Anyway, here it is:

(Quality is low, I know)

I’m also working on the lightspeed skipping scene so keep a look out for that. 😉

EDIT:
Here is the lightspeed concept I mentioned earlier:

The new docu shot you’re using fits very well. I think an alternative way to cut the scene would be to remove the deleted Kylo shots from TLJ, and instead cut to one of those establishing shots, but maybe create the shadows of those TIE fighters drift across the landscape (or the TIEs themselves). That might help glue together the planet shot and the ground shot. The bridge shot right now feels a little odd, since we see him on the bridge, then a few seconds later in the middle of a battle.

Nice ideas, though like I said, I’m basically done even trying with this scene, so by all means the rest of you guys can go crazy with it, but I will probably leave it as it is in the film.

I agree the new footage is a very good match. I’m not sure yet whether to go that route but it looks like we’ve got a great option ready to go, at any rate.

I don’t really get the lightspeed clip, though. Seems more frenetic than wiping from the ships leaving.

Thanks, glad you’ll consider it.

Okay, well, at least you were honest. 😄 Just thought that it wouldn’t hurt to at least see what it looks like.

Awesome work man! I love the extension of these scene. However, I agree the last cutback to the forest I would remove. Keep up the great work and may the force be with you!

The BBC footage is great. I would not include the cutaway to it at the end of the scene, however.

I agree about the cutaway. But the BBC footage was only 720p. Or were you talking about this footage? Beacuse this is from a Swedish documentry.

Yes, that’s what I meant.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I love the concept, but I’m afraid this is going to be out of our collective ability. I don’t think any amount of special effects work we could do would make it feel totally seamless.
I really love that musical piece, that would be a beautiful way to have opened the film. It would grind to a screeching halt when Rey makes that gross sound.

idir_hh I watched your footage and was thinking the behind the scenes with Luke and Leia fighting could be used if you cover the moving camera with a training remote tracking them.
