I’d punch in the contrast more for a more classic film look but it really looks in good shape and gives me hope for the amount of latitude there is to alter the look, the original sources are fairly neutral being such early digital.

I think a classic film would look more like this:

The old film prints really were not that bright and vibrant, with technicolor being the notable exception in the vibrancy department.

Yes that is absolutely what I was thinking! A bit dark but I actually like this direction best.

An alternative color grading:

great.
like this.

I really don’t.

Well, what looks good as a single frame often is much too bright, contrasty, and saturated when seen in motion. Most of us grade a film like we would a photograph. I’ve been guilty of it myself. Cinematic color grading generally leads to much less vibrant imagery, and while it may seem lackluster as a still, generally looks far more natural in motion:

You’re probably right

My background has more to do with photos and I would agree there’s levels of pop you would want to avoid for a video grade you would push in a photo edit. Also should be mindful of losing detail, the highlight on Padme’s right sleeve by comparison.

Also couldn’t help myself and made another mix plus a black and white version just for fun.

Gosh, even for virtually no color correction, that’s a beauty.

I’ll be honest, TPM is the hardest one to work on.

Also, while I did get a new job, it’s on hold due to the pandemic, but rest assured as soon as I start having more income I will be saving up for a new machine with which I can actually get decent rendering speeds.

In the meantime, I will still be doing preliminary SDR grades as soon as I get a hold of the new 4K discs.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve found the PT to be easier to work on, but global correcctions don’t work on a few scenes. For TPM, I’ve found that I have to treat the first part of the film a little different and the the rest pretty much works as a whole. I detest the magenta tones that the actual film had in the first hd transfer (not sure when it was done for TPM, but 2003 for the OT) so I have been working on the Republic ship explosion to tone that down. Qui-gon and Maul’s short duel on Tatooine might need something different as well. TPM is the first of the film films that I think I have a decent color grade on as well as a completed edit (I loved the theatrical cut but I hate puppet Yoda). For ATOC I’ve had to separately adjust the Tusken Raider scenes because they come even more purple unless I do. And I’ve also been standardizing the opening crawl and end credit colors.

It works better with close-ups such as this, but as you can see the DVD deleted scenes will look better than ever!

deleted scene upscale and basic regrade with film grain

Damn, once you finish these, I may have to update my Revenge of the Sith extended edition. Will you release a version with no alterations other than the upscale?

Hello, I’m new here! What settings did you use for FilmConvert? I am a aspiring Filmmaker working on a project and I would like to use this for my visuals.

Thanks for your time.

I plan on releasing ungraded upscales of all the deleted scenes, yes.

While I’ve tried this program in the past, I currently don’t use it. I primarily use the lumetri color panel found in premiere pro along with film emulation LUT’s made by myself and others. Red Giant products have also been useful.

Although, I just saw that they came out with a new product Nitrate, which I will be checking out.

Here’s another one.

Basically all these are this: HDR to LOG conversion, Custom LOG to Kodak 2283 LUT (previously built for TPM Blu-ray based originally intended for LOG footage converted from SDR), AI Sharpen, Film Grain

I still need to tweak the HDR to LOG conversion to better take advantage of the enhanced dynamic range and bit depth, same applies to the KODAK 2283 LUT. AI Sharpen settings have to be tweaked shot by shot. Film grain settings just basic right now, needs more tweaking.

Woah. I don’t even know if I’m looking at the same movie. That’s incredible!

That looks fantastic!

Could you show a comparison of that shot with the original on framecompare to really show the difference?
