Alternatively, if we’re going with the original movie intro, I used a deleted scene from TLJ to add a few more seconds to it. The shots line up perfectly, even the TIEs. I realize it’s not much, but perhaps we could put some sort of voiceover on it now since it’s a bit longer?

That looks great, yeah I think it needs an establishing shot of krennics ship (could be recoloured to black) descending to mustafar and flying by Vaders Castle to make transition to the battle less abrupt.

I would say that the transition to the battle was already abrupt. I was thinking that this would help alleviate that to a certain extent since the camera is already focusing on Kylo. Maybe some sound effects could help with the transition.

I think the difference is cutting from Kylo to Kylo, in the theatrical it’s more just like here’s the establishing shot of Mustafar, and now here’s what Kylo’s been doing there.

That being said, sound effects and music would 100% help. If you started slowly building the sounds of laser fire and his lightsaber during the star destroyer scenes, and put a riser in that built up to the cut point, I’d wager most people would say it works.

Yeah, the main reason I want to do this so badly is because none of the main saga movies have ever gone directly from space into a planet. There’s almost always the interior of a ship in between those (with the exception of TLJ).

Clearly you can see here that nothing really works with this clip as the video quality of the added shots is very poor as well as the added music.

I think you are on to something. Perhaps when Kylo uncovers the stone chest and grabs the wayfinder, instead of panning back to him holding it against the backdrop of the forest you can show an establishing shot of Vader’s castle from Rogue One instead. Just another link to him and his grandfather and shows the audience it is indeed Mustafar. You can make it look like he is in the interior of the castle retrieving the wayfinder instead of outside. Just an idea. Keep up the good work!

Using footage from other movies besides Star Wars can be a benefit too. Just look at Hal’s edit of Episode III. The footage of Natalie Portman and the baby work really well when modified and inserted in properly.

You are aware that the extra footage is from a BBC documentary about one of Jupiter’s volcanic moons. 😕

Oh, I am. I’m just giving a suggestion that doing more of this could help with some pacing issues for this movie. Agent9, a fan editor who has been absent for some time, did an amazing edit of Man of Steel while also using footage from other movies to help some pacing issues, and for the most part, it worked really well.

Honestly if you’re adding non-preexisting Mustafar shots I’d try to find something that doesn’t feature lava.

Or maybe brighten or pink-ify the added footage to roughly match the look of the main footage. Or if you reuse Vader’s castle, possibly with Krennic’s shuttle removed, do the same to make its atmosphere feel the same as what follows. (I’m sure the planet still had lava, right?)

That, along with the crawl mentioning his “grandfather’s” wayfinder, would be pretty neat. Makes it feel less arbitrary that “two were made,” since it’d be more clear that there was one for each of two Sith.

I do like the concept and that’s not a bad mockup at all. Nice find with the volcanic footage!

Oh, and should Kylo’s scar from TLJ be further healed for that brief moment on the bridge?

My stance on revising fan edits.

I just started the audiobook of the novelization and it specifically mentions that the wayfinder belonged to Vader. I feel stating that somewhere could help solidify that we are on Mustafar to the audience.

I don’t know about this specific clip but maybe something with lava in a forest setting could blend well with the existing footage? https://youtu.be/eLE3kaLUfUk

Unfortunately that shot has several watermarks that make it unusable.

As for Evazan’s work, I think it looks great, but I’d replace that one shot of the lava flowing in a circle. It’s just strange and unnatural looking. Like it’s trying to form an arena for an unwitting protagonist.

I thought the arena shot looked good because this is supposed to be the shrine where Vader kept his wayfinder

I like the lava ring. Ideally, and this would be way out there for us, the action would be taking place within that circle. But even so, it’s a striking enough visual to plausibly be an establishing shot for an environment.

There are some good aereial shots here, as well as a dramatic take of lava exploding around trees at this point:

Maybe the trees shot, when slowed down, could be used instead of the ring of fire to introduce the forest?

I’m currently reading the novelization and since so much discussion on this thread has been about the opening of the movie, I figured I’d summarize the opening of the novel. It shifts some things around and provides a framework for how a potential fan edit could look. I’ll start with the first chapter:

  • Opens with Rey floating with rocks and reaching out to past Jedi
  • She proceeds to run the training course, but completes it without having any force visions (struggles to fight off the red training remote but due to impatience)
  • After taking down the remote she has force vision…
    • jungle fades away and (Sith) whispers fill her ears
    • First image is of Kylo Ren attacking robed figures with his lightsaber (probably the sequence we get on Mustafar)
    • Second image seems to be her standing alone in front of the monolith on Exegol
    • Flashes of Luke, Kylo, Han’s hand on Kylo’s cheek, Rey’s parents flying away from Jakku
    • Finally, a voice in her head saying “Exegol” and an image of the Sith throne, first empty and then with her
      sitting on it
    • Vision ends and Rey helps BB-8 out from under the tree

Thoughts and feelings? I like that it begins the movie with Rey and Leia and then introduces the antagonist with less obvious footage and mystery (i.e. not immediately seeing Kylo and Palpatine interact).

I like the idea of some of the scenes almost being a force vision Rey has. This could work in an edit.

I read somewhere that in the novelisation, the Luke and Leia training fight was actually a flash back that Leia had at the start of the film.

That seems to be the case!

A quick summary of Chapter 2 for those who are interested:
(The following happens immediately after Rey rescues BB-8 and before her conversation with Leia)

  • Hux, and Pryde are on Mustafar watching Kylo cut down Mustafarian colonists
  • (Hux and Pryde chat about how beautiful Kylo’s fighting is but is absolutely unnecessary)
  • After killing everyone, Kylo walks through Mustafar and the planet surface is described
  • Kylo approaches a pool with Vader’s castle in the background. Here he talks to the “oracle” (actually a weird and unnecessary conversation as well)
  • Oracle points Kylo toward a chest in the middle of the pool where he finds Vader’s wayfinder
  • The rest plays out as in the movie

I feel like including some establishing shots such as the ones being discussed in this thread, in addition to a matte with Vader’s castle before Kylo discovers the wayfinder would be adequate to flesh this scene out a bit. I feel like we’re on the right track given what’s being discussed!

If these posts are more annoying than helpful, let me know and I’ll stop. I just find the novel fascinating and a good source for inspiration!

According the leaker JediPaxis, there were at least 3 different ways the film opened at one point or another.

The first opening I recall was what you described, it would start with an extended flashback of Luke and Leia training, then it would flash forward to present day, with Leia training Rey in the same place.

The second opening he described started on Exegol, where we would see the communication tower activate, and the Star Destroyers rise out of the ice. Basically this change was made because they felt the stakes needed to be introduced at the beginning of the film. I imagine this could’ve been just propelled by music, but I also could picture Palpatine’s broadcast being heard at this point too.

Then the third is what we got, which starts with Kylo on Mustafar.
