It’s also very easy to remux an MKV file into an MP4 with just the video and one audio track without reencoding any of it if you need an MP4 for compatibility reasons but don’t want to compromise on visual quality.

I’ve just managed to accomplish that, thank you.

Is the the final v3 available now? Same link as before?

So, there are V3 video files posted at the link. However, I am still going through and spot-checking, and to be honest, there may be one or two things I’d like to tweak before announcing a release.

My main concern centers around the audio levels of the Palpatine contact scene. I think the music when the dice disappears from Kylo’s hands is a bit too loud (it’s how the original soundtrack file was mixed for the CD, but I don’t think that works for the film mix).

If any of you would be gracious enough to download the 4gb mkv to help confirm or deny my instinct, I would be very grateful! (this scene occurs at about the 2:11 mark)

I also might want to slightly tweak the fx shot adding the radio monitors over Kylo’s shoulder in the wide shot. Unfortunately that would mean a re-render and encode, which would delay everything by a day or so.

I wish I could just say it’s done, but I’d like to check these things first. Thanks again to everyone for your ideas and help.

Just downloaded it to my computer. (If I get a chance tonight, I may be able to check my home theatre system to get another feel.

On the computer side, at the moment, I think I get what you mean by the volume. It is a bit too loud on spots, one example is the low string cord that seems pretty loud for the scene. Also the musical notes with the dice could be dialed down a little bit. It may be because the scene itself is more of a sombre occasion and feels like someone turned up the volume a little too much.

Poppa,

I downloaded the 34GB file before work this morning.

Just got home and watched the part you mentioned paying attention to the audio.

I guess I see what you’re saying but honestly if you wouldn’t have asked me to look for it, I don’t think I would have noticed!

I had to close my eyes and play it over a few times. 😛

If it bothers you enough, go ahead and adjust as required.

But I think it’s fine.

Thanks guys for the early looks! I’m glad it’s subtle, but I did make two (minor) tweaks to the wide FX shot of the radio room. It just looked a little off to me.

I will likely adjust the audio slightly for peace of mind (1-2 DBs likely), and encode a new version for the full release hopefully tomorrow (with an updated date in the filenames).

Thanks again!

Hi poppa, I also downloaded the 34GB version and I think it looks great. I wouldn’t have noticed anything off about it if you hadn’t pointed it out.

But if it gives you peace of mind then I certainly think it’s worth adjusting.

@poppasketti I know you probably won’t be doing this change for V3, but can you remove Luke brushing his shoulder on Crait in a later version of the edit? It is just so on-the-nose, considering the fact that he walked out of the blaster fire visibly “unharmed” already showed that he was unharmed. It also feels out-of-place and disrupts the tension of the scene.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

Luke is taunting Kylo in order to get him angry, and overlook the illusion. After Luke wipes his shoulder, you can see how Kylo goes from shock to resolve. He’s gonna go down there and finish Luke, regardless of what anyone says. I get why you feel it isn’t serious enough, but I feel it is appropriate for the moment. But that’s poppa’s choice!

I thought that was a fun Mark Hamill moment. I understand why some might not like it, but it always worked for me. I also agree it has that added element of provoking Kylo-Ren to buy more time.

I think I’m totally locked now on V3 (hope!), making a couple subtle tweaks to the levels and an fx shot. I’m encoding now and it should take some time to make all four versions, but I hope to everything up sometime Thursday!

I LOVE Luke dusting his shoulder!

I totally agree with Poppa and Rogue’s interpretation of it and so there’s no sense in me adding further commentary but I think it’s a fun moment and I’d be sad to lose it.

Hi Poppa, I genuinely cannot wait for this.

Is the 30+ gb with new tweaks up yet?

If not, would you mind giving the heads up when it is?

…I NEED THIS and so my trigger finger is at the ready 😃

Thanks so much for everything you’ve done here

Hey Stu,

Nothing with the new tweaks is up right now. The 34gb version is encoding now with ffmpeg, which takes about 10 hours. Encoding time being what it is, I should have everything done and posted by Friday mid-day. So unfortunately the tweaks may have set us back two days instead of one.

If piecemeal is preferred, though, I could post the versions as they complete instead of all at once, though!

Oh1zghj man, can’t wait. With Hal’s TFA edit and your TLJ edit … My collection is almost complete.

(remembers TROS)

Oh yeah, that’ll be fun to work on…

V3 RELEASE!

Hello and happy Friday! (Friday? Man I’ve really lost track of time while on lockdown. Stay safe everyone!) I’m pleased to say that V3 is now posted! The new files are dated “032020”.

This new version is a direct response to The Rise of Skywalker, and intends to ease the transition between the two films by teasing the surprise return of Emperor Palpatine. As often happens, the change list kept growing and we started making fixes to other parts of the film as well.

Therefore, for those not interested in any Palpatine teases in The Last Jedi, I will be updating V2 to include those other improvements.

Thank you so much to everyone at OT.com. The feedback, big and small, has helped make this version the best it can be, and I’m very proud to work with all of you! The original post had been updated. I tried to streamline it a bit more to make it less confusing (let me know if I failed!).

Once again, here are the V3 changes:

V3 PALPATINE TEASES

(PW for all vimeo links: fanedit)

V3 NON-PALPATINE CHANGES

  • Finn Wakes

    • Description: Rey whispers “Finn” right before he wakes up, hinting at his force sensitivity.
  • Praetorian Knife Continuity Fix

    • Description: removed continuity error of knife disappearing mid-shot, also had praetorian’s knife knocked away by Rey’s lightsaer strike way in the background of earlier shot.
  • Deleted Shuttle Scene Improvements

    • Description: improved reflections and particles on the wide shots, fixed 3D environment on viewscreen.
  • Crait Battle Tweaks

    • Description: enhanced Finn’s “Rose” reaction to her getting shot down, rotoscoped walker to turn and flex to target Finn, reversed angle of Finn’s speeder being targeted by walker (graphic provided by smpearce1981) and modified targeting graphics, cropped Finn cockpit POV shot so walker position difference isn’t noticeable (was always off, even in theatrical), adjusted angle and position of walker so it fires down and towards Finn speeder (mockup by NeverarGreat), enhanced Finn cockpit explosion effects, added explosion effect to shot of speeder coming apart, reduced music during canon explosion, cannon beams and hum removed when Finn exits crashed speeder.
  • Added Wilhelm Scream

    • Description: Wilhelm!
  • Broom Boy Rebel Ring Removal

    • Description: extended shots in end sequence to cover the rebel ring shot, maintaining timing.

I called home and had my 10 year old log in to his Google Drive and download the 34GB version.

(My wife would never have figured it out.) 😛

I’ll have it waiting for me when I get home so I can make my ISO.

I won’t get a chance to view it until Monday (working the weekend)… but I’ll be ready.

THANKS AGAIN POPPA!

Can’t wait to view it in all it’s glorious entirety.

Thank you Poppa for creating the TLJ we should have had in the cinemas on release day.

I personally plan to wait for a TROS edit and I hope to marathon Hal’s TFA, Poppa’s TLJ and TROS on May the 4th (if its available).
