smpearce don’t let my cynicism discourage you, without suggestions we wouldn’t have great fanedits, so there’s the other side of the coin. Also I’d suggest ripping using makemkv or dvdfab in 2160p then if the video is in HEVC try lossless container conversion to mp4 using VLC media player. Otherwise do a HQ conversion in Handbreak in 2160p. You can easily work with 4K on a basic laptop in Premiere and Final Cut using proxy files.

PSA: You can work with the actual H264 video stream from a Blu-Ray directly in Premiere as long as it’s demuxed into a *.264 file and your video timeline is set with a 1080p AVCHD preset. You’ll also need to convert the audio into either AC3 or WAV/AIFF.

ChainsawAsh I do normally work in Premiere using H264. Do you demux directly from BR to .264 or for that matter any non-mkv filetype, bypassing mkv entirely. If so what app do you use?

Also I’m finding some BR are encoded with VC1 and thus have to be transcoded to something else like H264/H265 to import into Premiere.

Yes, I rip the BR then find the .m2ts file that contains the movie in the STREAM folder, then use tsmuxer to demux that into its .264 and .ac3/.dts streams. I then import the .264 file directly into my Premiere project; what I do with the audio varies greatly depending on the project/source format.

VC1 isn’t too popular anymore as far as I can tell. Nothing I’ve attempted to work with has started out as VC1, at any rate.

Hey Kraus

No criticism or discouragement taken offensively at all.

It’s all fair comment/advice/observation.

A quick question then as I don’t want to sabotage Hal’s thread with tech help, but if I wanted to play with Hal’s edit from the 30gb MKV, rather than my own rip (due to wanting to keep 99.9 percent of Hal’s work) how would I strip that MKV down to it’s x264 component parts so I can get it into remiere.
Funnily enough, I’ve just had a thought…TSmuxr…that might break apart the container.

However, bracing myself for the fact that might not work, I’d be keen to get your advice.

If it’s more prudent to take this conversation to PM’s I’m happy to continue there if you have the time?

Sorry for going off topic here, Hal

Yep, tsmuxer. Also, there’s a whole technical help section of the forum. I try to pop in there and help where I can whenever I remember to check it.

You can also use VLC player to recontainerize H264 from mkv to mp4 without transcoding. Hal’s audio should already be AC3.

Hi,
Listening to Hals commentary track on V4 edit but Hal states V3 as the films version within the track. I take it Hals reused the commentary track found in v3 ?

Yeah, just resynced it to match the length. I must have recorded a little segment somewhere specifically for V3.

I see, just finished listening to it I find these tracks very insightful v3 is ref quite a bit thoughtout parts but its not an issue, also great that it was recorded prior to the events of Rise of Skywalker as you hear your hopes along the way before what we know now about the story. Last part is the best just before the credits roll stating that maybe episode IX theatrically might not even need a fanedit when out. 😋

I like what ROS offered but I’m liking more the idea of listening to another commentary track on how episode IX story was tightened and fixed by the fan community in the near future. I’m off to listen to your TLJ commentary track now 😀👍

Thanks Hal

Speaking of Hal commentaries, I used to fall asleep to your prequel commentaries in my first year of college actually!
(revealing how old I am, roughly)

Not because you were boring or anything, but because your edits were the only videos I had saved on my phone for whatever reason, and our dorms had bad wi-fi at night. It was alright because I loved hearing you talk about how you went about editing the films, your thoughts on them, who helped you, and how, etc… I really enjoyed your dry sense of humor too.

Without any specifics, I just thought you should know you played some part in inspiring where I ended up in my real life atm. I don’t think I would have thrown nearly as much time into learning how to edit better if I didn’t think I myself could spend a couple hours a day practicing by editing those movies from your example.

I actually used to use DVD commentaries the same way once upon a time. Now I use history podcasts instead.

I noticed a little oopsie in V4, so I’ll have to eventually release a fixed version. But I may as well hold off in case we have any more bright ideas related to TROS.

It’s a video glitch during Leia’s first conversation with Finn. The cut point was misaligned when I go back to the BluRay from footage from NeverAr.

My stance on revising fan edits.

And I was just about to actually sit down and download V4 after clearing a bunch of hard drive space - guess it’s a good thing I came here before I ate up too much of my monthly bandwidth!

Hi there, Im here from Poppasketti’s TLJ edit, I’d love to check out what has been done to this film. I would be interested to see if it truly improves the viewing experience.

This is the way.
