What Sade and ash said. Do what’s best for you, you’ve already accomplished more than any of us could have dreamed of!

Do what you need to do, Hal. Thanks for all the impressive SW edits you’ve already done. I’m glad you will still be able to contribute in some small ways.

(Let’s be real, don’t all of us have a hodgepodge of edits from different editors as our own personal “definitive” sagas at this point, anyway?)

Not me. I can survive in space.

Err—, anyway, thank you all for your understanding. It’s not something I come to lightly. And joking aside, even I have TCH as an alternative to Solo.

Ash hits the nail on the head.

Fan editing is always a daunting task, especially when the film is as messy as this and there’s so much pressure for you specifically to come up with something good. See it as a compliment. But you need passion to do a fan edit, and it doesn’t make sense to undertake such a task if you’re not feeling the passion. This is a hobby, not a chore.

There’s a lot of people already chomping at the bit to edit the film, so it won’t be lacking for fan edits. Perhaps in time these edits will be your way in - what are you PT edits if not an amalgamation of edits that came before? And look how successful those turned out. For me, nothing makes me want to make a fan edit more than seeing a fan edit that isn’t 100% what I wanted but is so good that it inspires me to make my own. Your PT edits certainly did that for me, hopefully some TROS edits will do that for you.

Yeah Hal, I think you could just wait another year or so and you could probably piece together an edit of your liking that you can share with others. A lot less work than making all of the changes yourself.

Author

We’ll have to see. Given the way I think, best thing for me right now is accept the possibility that it won’t ever be.
I’d be happy to put individual ideas together and upload for anyone to use, and to find an edit emerge I’ll like.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m not leaving or anything. Just don’t need the open loop of TROS:A for the foreseeable future.

No worries Hal. If anything, I’ve just been treating this as an additional brainstorming thread. Life comes first (although if you’re so busy that you don’t have time to breathe, you might wanna consider fanediting your life into something more manageable).

Since this thread is still open to discussion, can I throw out some ideas that have been rolling around in my head for a while?

-If the extended opening is released on Blu-Ray, I’d really like for you to insert it in the movie. It sounds like it fleshes out Kylo’s emotional state and the First Order power struggle more, rather than the context-free montage of Kylo killing people we got in the theatrical version.

-Some of Leia’s scenes deserve a slight trim. They clearly wrote the dialogue around the limited Leia footage they had, and it’s really awkward. The scene of Leia telling Snap to be more optimistic definitely needs to be cut. He wasn’t even being pessimistic, so the conversation makes no sense.

-This might seem arbitrary, but I’d really like to replace the audio in the beginning of the Fury Road chase scene with the audio from this promotional clip. The theatrical version replaces the music with tracked in music from Rey’s training montage, and the older music fits better in my opinion.

-If anything can be done to make Leia’s death less confusing, that would be welcome. She senses something in the Force, goes off to another room, says Kylo’s name, and then dies. Maybe you could intercut the Han vision scene with Leia’s death, to imply Leia created that vision to redeem Kylo?

I’m just grasping at straws here. I don’t have any concrete plan for editing this movie, and it seems like you don’t either, but there are some serious problems that need to be fixed in order for me to accept TROS as part of the saga.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:

I’m with you for the most part.

I can’t recall the music that starts off the chase, so if that promotional clip’s audio can be used to replace repeated music, sure. I’d also like to briefly quote Duel of the Fates during the Death Star duel, as in one of the TV spots, and Across the Stars (as subtle as possible, subliminal even) during the kiss.

Leia certainly is awkward in this movie, but I’m not sure cutting that attempt at a gag would help. Hard to say right now for me.

Some have suggested moving the Han scene up to between Ben and Rey sending Leia, but I’m not sure Kylo’s performance afterward would match where his character would then be.

I would really love to get the full original Luke scene(s).

We really need the movie to come out and hope for some deleted scenes to work with and know what is really feasible or not.

Has anyone watched Jay and Silent Bob recently to check some of Carrie’s dialogue from there. I’d imagine most lines are fairly clean in the channel, and she says a few things that might be able to be added dialogue wise off-screen.

Her lines are:
You two boys need a ride?
You both don’t have to sit back there. One of you can sit up here with me.
So where are you boys from?
What brings you to Indiana?
Well, do unto others. That’s what the Book says.
I live my life by it.
Are you kidding? I’ve dedicated my life to it. Every hour of every day.
Of course. You know how lonely it gets on the road? Thanks to the Book, I’m never alone–if you know what I mean.
You live by the Book, too?
That’s good to hear. But it takes deed, not words. It’s a lot easier to say you live by the Book than to actually do it.
Can you do it?
No time like the present, right?

I imagine you could go with

“Rey, be patient” “You are never alone. Nothing’s impossible.” splicing it together, right before Rey’s says “Nothing’s impossible.” (I’d cut the communing with the Jedi, but this works if not.)
It’d be really cool to get “It gets lonely, but you are never alone. Nothing’s impossible.” to which Rey could respond with the “Yes Master” instead of later. Later where she says that could just be filled with reaction shot with a smile.

“It takes deeds, not words. But it’s a lot easier to say than to actually do.” a bit harsh, but a potential drop in for the awkward “Don’t tell me what things look like, tell me what they are.”

(Re-the waiting until you can comb released edits for Ideas)Everytime I watch Cloak of Deception, I always feel a bit proud of the Otah Gunga removal. I’m sure lots of us feel the same with the way you combined the best of everyone’s take on things.

I’m not sure shoehorning in offscreen Carrie dialogue would be helpful, but might be worth taking a look at. I’ve never seen Clerks but wasn’t it made 1991ish?

And thanks for saying that about the synthesized or curated nature of the prequel edits in particular. I guess it’s like a communal soup that many have nevertheless drawn from and further modified in our own bowls. I feel similarly with some of the ROTS edits that have been produced since mine.

  1. 1995 1994
  2. Carrie isn’t in Clerks, she’s in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, from 2001

Jeez, I wasn’t paying close attention. Is that a sequel to Clerks, or in continuity?

It’s pretty much a spin-off I believe.

Yeah, I don’t know how “in-continuity” any of the Jay and Silent Bob movies are - I think Jason Lee plays both his Mallrats character AND his Chasing Amy character in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but not his Dogma character, though Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is a direct sequel to Strike Back and directly references the events of Dogma, but Ben Affleck plays his Chasing Amy character in Reboot and not his Mallrats or Dogma characters…

Inside, I’m telling myself that this is not true, but I think this is a fact. Is this an act of hiding the behind the scenes and fan backlash towards The Rise of Skywalker, kinda like how they never released deleted scenes for Rogue One. Solo a much worse production, and still, deleted scenes were released, despite trying to hide the director change.

Well, I guess we are lucky that the The Last Jedi had such a conclusive ending…

But in all seriousness, editing a movie that’s already so fast paced without deleted scenes is gonna be… well… let’s just say I don’t like our odds.

Look the feeling of it being fast paced will not be fixed by deleted scenes.
The problem is they crammed so much into the film, the editing is really overly tight. Deleted scenes will not loosen it to great effect unless you can use deleted scenes for the first 10 minutes of the film. Eliminating the bad Mustafar montage is the starting point… there’s nothing that can be done with a montage so lets forget it exists and… move along now

Since it looks like there won’t be any deleted scenes, to follow up with Krausfadr, would removing the Mustafar part and have something in the crawl that talks about it simply, like “Kylo obtained the key to find the source of his master’s power/ Haunted by mysterious whispers, KYLO REN has obtained the key to reveal the source” or something like that. (I am TERRIBLE at writing)

We don’t have to label it as “Sith Wayfinder” since the movie later tells us what it is.

I just suggest this IF having the opening scene on Mustafar raises more questions or whatever and things would flow better without it with a “simple” sentence in the crawl.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

Author

This was my initial thought as well right after I saw the movie. The Mustafar thing feels so fast, that it might be better to just say Kylo found one Wayfinder before the movie started, and we start by panning down to that red nebula.

The way it is now, the Mustafar scene just feels incomplete. We transition to the next planet before we even know where we are, and it breaks the rule of following the ship to the first scene. We just get the planet establishing shot and then hard cut to the planet surface.
