4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 314

The sound on Disney+ is considerably lower than any other streaming service I use, and I stream a lot. I have to turn the volume up a lot higher whenever I watch anything on Disney+.

There aren’t a lot of UHD releases I’d call simply unwatchable (hello there, Terminator 2). But at least for the original trilogy, I’d say these UHD’s will be simultaneously unwatchable AND leaps and bounds better than the existing Blu-rays, which is a combination I’m not sure I’ve ever seen, and hopefully won’t see again.

I find that HBO Now is also about as quiet as Disney+

Also, lately Disney’s blu-rays have had quieter audio mixes, too. I need to turn their discs up in my home theater about 4 or 5 clicks louder than normal.

Hmm, it is then more dynamic?
So it is louder when explosions there?

I wouldn’t go so far as to say the sound is bad, it’s just I’ve noticed it’s low volume. It’s definitely not more dynamic, less if anything. This disc always sounds better than streaming, but I just noticed Disney+ has a lower volume than other streaming services I use on the same device.

Looks like the next investor call is February 4th. It’s possible Iger mentions the box-set there. It’s also very possible he doesn’t, but the timing seems decent to mention to investors what their Rise of Skywalker home video plans are.

It’d be interesting to know what special features come with the movies. I for one hope, that all the trailers for the OT will be on there in at least HD. Those were missing from the BD Set. I could finally work on my german trailers again. I’m also with Dr. Dre here, 95% of the UHD OT is what I want. We can work with that to create the best looking OOT to date.
For the sake of preservation we have the 4Kxx versions. But for my viewing pleasure I wouldn’t mind a mix of the recomposited effects (which I like), but all CGI (which I don’t like) and otherwise altered scenes (Greedo, etc.) replaced with the original scenes from the 4Kxx versions.
So, although I swore to never buy a version of SW again unless it’s the OUT, the picture quality is quite tempting.

I’m getting the 4K box set, since I’ve bought every version of Star Wars starting with the $100 VHS in 1982. And also because by having it, I can enjoy future versions of Harmy’s DEs and 4K80!!😃

KISS are on their supposed tour with two imposters. Still not going. If this is the final SW video release, that’s nice or sad or whatever. However if you want my money you have to include the OUT.

Oh dude you hit the nail on the head. At least in the 80’s when Kiss got new members, they gave them new makeup/took it off. At least in '97 they were called the Special Editions and at the time it looked like the old versions would be temporarily out of print until the next major format to drive demand.

Then we reached a point where this is how it’s always been. Eric Singer has always been Peter Criss. Tommy Thayer has always been Ace Frehley.

We had the Reunion album Psycho Circus (which is analogous to the GOUT disc), but all the material was written by Paul and Gene. The material Ace and Peter wrote was all thrown out, and Paul and Gene let them play on one song to placate them.

Then you had the Farewell tour, that was immediately followed up by a World Tour. Then Ace and Peter got upset justifiably so and left again. Kiss has been touring posing Eric and Tommy as Ace and Peter ever since.

It feels doubly scummy as far as Eric Singer goes, because he was brought in on the Revenge album to play the material that was already written by Eric Carr. That whole album was a tribute to Eric Carr and it makes me feel dirty every time I listen to it because it has Eric Singer on it. And he’s a Peter imposter (Yes I wrote all that for that innuendo).

Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping. - DuracellEnergizer

Heyy it’s a perfect analogy so what can you say?? 😉

TNT will be having a Marathon of Star Wars. I’m curious if these are the “crappy” 04 Blu-ray master or the new 4k masters. I believe they got the rights to air the 16x9 cropped Blu-ray/digital (2015 no fox logo) version a few years back. I don’t have cable anymore so I can’t see for myself.
This could be a good time for Lucasfilm and Disney to drop a teaser for the upcoming new physical 4k disc boxset. Plus, maybe, and look at bonus content.
Unfortunately we can only hope and possibly be disappointed that it’ll just be the “Muclunkey” 19SE in the set.
Someone please see when you get the chance too.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

I’d put odds on the 16x9 blu-ray/digital cuts.

This^

Someone needs to start buying ad time on cable movie networks to advocate for OAR presentations. In an age with such affordable, massive TVs, there’s no excuse anymore. Not that there was ever a legitimate excuse for pan and scan…

An aside, are 16x9 presentations of anamorphic widescreen films even pan and scan, or do they just assume they’re protected for TV broadcast and crop them?

Who knows. My guess is they probably figure there’s more people watching regular television than home video so showing the black bars at the top and bottom might be distracting. It’s no different than the 4:3 days of cropping. Is it necessary now considering the bars are smaller on films like Star Wars with 16:9 TVs? No but again I’m not expert so I’m not sure.

Author
Time

The whole thing is ridiculous and weird and fear-based, honestly. It begins with the silly assumption that the consumer base is so reactionary and easily upset that the presence of black-bars will cause a significant number of viewers to balk and refuse to watch the programming. Which, so far as I know, has never been tested, and is completely untrue. Its only real precedent comes from when the decision was made in the early days of home video to bypass presenting movies in their original theatrical ratio for the sake of filling the screen on a tv, as not only were tvs square-shaped, but were significantly smaller, and were watched in most living rooms at a semi-fair distance. Which is again, not the case today, as even the cheap TVs are typically minimum 42" and the small screens, such as phones and tablets, are being watched much closer up, effectively replicaing the FOV you’d get at a theater.

And that’s not even getting into the fact most viewers are far more sophisticated about aspect ratios and why the black bars are there than they were in the '80s and 90s.

Basically - programmers and decisionmakers at most networks just assume their audiences are easily-upset rubes and babies unable to sit through the tiny acclimation period it takes to stop paying attention to the black bars - and they think the best way to solve the problem of their presumed-to-be-idiot audience is to placate the lowest common denominator at the expense of the movie and its creators. So instead of those “rubes” being reminded that if they’re honestly THAT upset about black bars they can hit the zoom button that comes for free on every remote of every TV sold in the last 10+ years, the solution is to chop up the movie before it’s presented. Because that’s how they’ve always done it, thanks to circumstances that basically don’t exist anymore, paired with circumstances that likely never existed back then, either.

There’s basically zero reason why every movie isn’t simply presented as it was intended to be seen by its director, as the default, and then the consumer can decide how they want to butcher it on their own if they’re that concerned about “not getting all the TV they paid for.”

Author
Time

And don’t forget that many TV shows and advertisements nowadays are filmed with black bars. The desire to make everything “cinematic” has made the general public used to black bars, so why not show movies in their original aspect ratio?

You know believe it or not, Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 2 on Disney Channel was shot at 2.35:1.

I know a lot of you don’t care about Disney Channel movies but since StarkillerAG brought up about stuff nowadays being shot at that ratio I thought I just point that out.

Love that ratio by the way.

Crappy blu-ray master. It included fox fanfare, magenta hues all over, and no maclunkey. Nothing to see here, move along…

So guys, do the 2020 FHD blu-ray versions of Episodes I- VI have the colors and other visual improvements (I know not always an improvement there) done to the 4K UHD ones? I wonder if getting the 2020 releases just for the 1080p FHD versions makes any difference when compared with the 2011 blu-rays?

“The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.”

Author

Not sure what FHD is?

But I can tell you this, the 4k Blurays are superior to the 2011 Blurays is detail and in color.

However there are still issues, just different ones. The colors aren’t good, they just aren’t as bad as the 2011 blurays. At least they don’t have the crushed black and clipped highlights of the 2011 versions so they can be corrected to look much better.

They also suffer from too much DNR but again not as badly done as the 2011 blurays.
