I think its the same video on the link … I am pretty sure regarding the Subtle one.

jarbear, it’s updated. The way you can tell is the previous version flashed a frame of Kylo at the very beginning. It’s not a very big change, though. Think it should be faster still?

Author

Maybe just the fade back to the normal eye color a little faster?

Ok, just updated the subtle version again (same link above)!

Definitely the subtle…but if my opinion counts for anything the more I watch it the less the whole idea of the eyes works.

I think the colouring is wrong (too orange??)

I agree with some other observations that the concept was great but now that it’s being tested it’s not working (for me)…ultimately it’s too distracting and theres enough going on in that scene as it is

P.S

I’m basing my above opinion solely on the strong and subtle versions

I’d like to see the ‘The eyes turn when lifting head’ version but the link appears to be dead, so I’ll reserve final comment until I’ve seen that

Subtle all the way!

The link is fixed now, my mistake!

smpearce1981, those are good thoughts to consider, thank you!

When Snoke’s torso falls…that’s not blue smoke!?? It’s a ghostly silhouette of cloaked Palpatine perfectly scaled to where Snoke was sat?

Haha! No it was not intentional, but I see it now! I love those happy accidents. It’s actually just a smoke charge that I distorted a bit. I can try a version where it leaves the screen, but honestly I’m happy with the way it looks now, especially now that I see the hood.

people would’ve still speculated for two years about what it meant. Then when the Palpatine reveal happens people would feel like it was obvious in retrospect, which I think is the goal, isn’t it?

This is the goal!

Axios, for the fight with the praetorian guards, I can see where the seams of the choreography are showing, and the music is kind of understated, but I’m still ok with it as-is. To me, it’s just a fun action scene after the emotional catharsis of the climax. I’ve seen the versions with “Duel of the Fates” the way Ortega cut it, and while it works, the music actually seems like overkill to me, making the scene seem more important than it really is. Unlike other lightsaber battles (such as Luke vs. Vader), there’s no opportunity to reveal character here. I’m not invested in the guards, so there’s not a lot of tension; it’s just more of a release for Rey and Kylo-Ren.

Although I like the alternate version with Snoke looking up, it might go a little too under the radar.

For the subtle version to work for me I think the eyes should change back to blue right after the strong Sith colour for a more sudden impact.

Poppa…if the eyes are staying I deffo think the ‘eyes turn on head lift’ is the one.

It’s there if you want it/are paying attention…but you’ve got to work for it.

Great work!!! 😃

Absolutely. It’s honestly one of the best set-up lightsaber battles in the entire saga, and you genuinely care for the people involved by the time it starts. I admit I wish the choreography were a little tighter (that one CGI’d out knife in particular) but in terms of flow and understated meaning, it’s great. What matters is that they’re fighting side by side, not so much the content of the fight itself.

Every time I watch these edits I pretend to be the audience watching it for first time. It’s kind of “if you blink you will miss it” which is great because it makes the movie an enigma. If this had been in theatrical release I could imagine much discussion afterwards with some people noticing theses small details and other’s missing it.

For me, the subtle works brilliantly. I’m not finding it distracting at all and it’s just another mystery surrounding the build-up to the next movie. As others have said I would also like to see how Snokes eyes look going straight back to blue after turning “Sith” yellow.

Quicker the change back the better for the subtle. It’s the way to go!

I really think we should be going strong, not subtle. The Palpatine revelation is not subtle at all, to the extent that it’s jarring. And we have to be creating these edits for the imaginary audience who have never seen these films before and are watching them for the first time in chronological order. Having a nice, obvious, ‘something force-y happened when Snoke died’, makes it very clear to the audience that something’s still up. Similarly, the subtlety only serves people like us, who can now watch those scenes with a little less cringe, mentally nodding satisfied as we encounter the sticking plaster instead of the cut. But for me (and I appreciate this is subjective), we’re creating alternative versions as if they’re the ones that aired in the cinema, for the first-time viewer. We need to be sure these changes are noticed, not just things we can comfortably know are there.

So I know you may have moved on from this, but I would like to revisit the cave shot.

IMHO I would say it would be better for the silhouette of her parents to merge into Palpatine and hold in front of her until the fog lifts to reveal Rey just standing there. So kind of a mix of the first and Second version.

Great work on everything else.

I just updated the subtle version of the Snoke eyes (same link) to make it an even faster flash of red.

I would say that is the goal for these V3 edits as a whole, but not for this particular moment. Likely in the next few days, I will repost links to all of the collective changes, and I think you’ll find the “Palpatine Contact” edit on the previous pages of this thread serves as a much stronger hint/reveal late in the film. The idea is to pepper in these little details that people may or may not see, and then at the end to clearly hint at something that has people talking and anticipating episode IX.

I had that thought too at one point but I don’t know if the footage I have of Palpatine will work through that whole moment. I could try it, but I kind of like the subtle way the hood appears as the hand is going up. It feels creepier and subtler, I think. Still, a good idea and something to consider!

Its a bit too quick for me, I would prefer if the strong red lingered a bit before cutting straight to blue without the in-between transition .

I agree with Poppa

The radio should be the more “blatant” reveal or hint. Just pepper things a bit though out the movie.

Also, in regards to Hal’s TFA:R, he is adding a few Palp things, sound clips/music wise, but not out right reveal things.

With a combination of these two things, there is some hinting that should progressively reveal things. But not out right reveal it. All of us can agree the who Palpatine treatment from TROS was just BAM! Right in your face and even in the crawl.

Let’s just keep hinting at it for the time being.

Here’s the only non-Palpatine related tweak I’m considering, thanks to the idea from Rogue Leader.

I had piece together Rey whispering “Finn”, because all of times she says his name were in the wrong tone! At the end of TFA when she’s speaking to him while he’s unconscious, she whispers “friend” and “again”, which is where this came from.

That’s really good Poppa, very seamless.

It will help hint a bit more for Finn’s sensitivity thingy.

Nicely done!
Perhaps a touch quieter?

Good point Paden, I rewatched it with my volume up a bit better on the computer than my phone and I think quieter would be a good thing to do.
