VFX wizards, how realistic is the idea of adding Ben as a force ghost to the final scene?

Author

I could totally see it being possible, but tricky. It really depends on available footage/elements. I can’t think of any moments of Adam’s face in the movie that could easily be re-worked without it being noticeable.

You might have to grab something not from the film.

Well I know I definitely want the ghosts of Luke, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Yoda, and Qui-Gon, but hey, that’s just me.

The cultist I wanna try (minus any deleted material that may appear on the Blu-Ray):

-Open with our heroes playing dejarik and meeting up with Boolio. The scene is over when they make the first jump to hyperspace.

-Cut to Rey training on Ajan Kloss, with Kylo communing with Vader’s helmet, sparking visions in both of them. (I really want to change the style of flashback in this movie because I think the cuts are too quick and they just hurt my eyes.)

-Cut to Kylo on Mustafar

-In Exegol scene, you don’t see Palpatine’s face, it remains in darkness.

-Cut lines about creating Snoke and digitally alter Snoke tube into Palpatine tube, or maybe just a body-part tube. (Maybe the Sith Acolytes are cloning parts of Palpatine himself just to reattach them)

-End scene with ships erupting from the ice, but remove the Voice Over. That scene felt very very off to me.

-The Falcon lands on Ajan Kloss, and Rey fights with Poe.

-Remove Poe’s verbal reference to Ackbar Junior.

-Re-organize Poe’s briefing to reduce the feeling that Oscar has given up/make things less silly.

-Reduce Leia’s onscreen presense. She feels very off in this movie and there is a very good reason for that!

-Make the ‘leaving for Pasanna’ section of the movie a little slower. (You cut from 3PO saying goodbye to R2 to Rose saying goodbye to Leia saying goodbye to Rey looking at some trees within like a minute.)

-Make Rey’s half of her Force Communication with Kylo less dark? Why is it suddenly night time where she is? I understand the filmmaking reasons for it, but in all other cases of that effect both sides’ environments are unaffected.

-Remove Rey’s “I recognize that ship” moment.

-I like the Pasanna bits for the most part, until Kylo Ren shows up.

-Reduce Finn’s flanderization (cut him yelling REY!!! as much as possible. Maybe keep “They got Chewie!!!”

-Remove Chewie’s reappearance until Rey senses him on Kjimi.

-On Kjimi, remove any explicit mentions to Poe’s romantic past with Zorri, as well as removing the drug runner origin story of the Guatemalen lead actor.

-Remove Kylo saying that Rey is a Palpatine, because she isn’t and that’s silly. Instead have her scene with him in that hanger center on him trying to recruit her to kill Palpatine with her. Because so many lines are removed, play around with the scene being largely silent.

-Remove any later references to Rey’s family, including flashbacks. Rey’s parents abandoned her like garbage and sold her into indentured servitude.

-Remove any implication of romantic chemistry between Finn and Jannah.

-Remove the fact the Leia intentionally is reaching out to Kylo while he fights Rey on the Death Star. It makes it seem like she is trying to distract him and get him killed. Leia just passes away and that distracts Kylo.

-Remove “The weapon of a Jedi deserves more respect” mostly because of the awful delivery.

-Remove flashback to young Luke and Leia.

-Reduce the “remember this?” vibe of the 'lifting the x-wing scene.

-Remove destruction of Kjimi. Mainly to have who’s operating the Sith Star Destroyers be more vague.

-Remove Finn’s VO when Rey is flying to Exegol.

-Remove Nebula around Exegol? To explain all the ships at the end getting there so easily?

-We see Palpatine when Rey first meets him. He doesn’t welcome her home or talk about family. Maybe some of the removed dialogue from the opening can be used here, maybe the name drop of “The Final Order” can be here.

-If it’s at all possible, remove/reduce The Fleet Moment.

-Remove Palpatine shooting lightening up into the sky if possible.

-Remove Ben’s kiss and him fading away.

-Have the movie end with the celebration, with Kylo walking into the distance, or something.

I’m forgetting a lot, so don’t take this as final or even possible.

Pretty good list, Snooker! What would the opening shot be if you started the movie with Finn and Poe’s mission?

A random thought, instead of Rey being the one to transmit the path through the Unknown Regions to the Resistance, what if it was Ben Solo? Rey originally wanted to go on that mission on her own, so I could see her wanting to take on Palpatine alone to try and protect her friends. But having 3PO say it is coming from “Kylo Ren”, or even better “Ben Solo”, could help add to Ben’s redemption, and lead to the idea that the Resistance knows that Ben may have switched sides.

I like the idea though (I think someone here mentioned it), that Rey transmitting from Luke’s X-wing is sort of continuing Luke’s “spark of hope.” If we could find a way to make that more explicit, I think that’d be preferable.

That’s an interesting thought! Not to take away from Rey, but if people thought “Red Five” was Luke, it would give people even more reason to follow the signal. People believe in Luke, and if people don’t know if he is dead or not they might see it as a sign to finally join the fight.

I’d like to pitch a fan-edit idea when it comes to this movie. What if the Emperor came back as a Sith force ghost in the first act and use the life force of Rey and Ben to come back in the flesh? This idea was inspired by the original script for Return (Revenge) Of The Jedi.

Is it possible to imply Leia has been in poor health since her spacewalk in TLJ? Add coughing in both movies, maybe dub in a line of some Resistance member with their back to the camera suggesting she will never fully recover, even put a single word in the crawl or something. Her death already comes out of nowhere but cutting the Maz scene (essential to do, I hate it) would make that even worse.

Sounds good, but then what’s the climax of the movie?

Still the same. It’s just Palpatine would be ghost up until that point rather than a cyborg. It really makes no difference. The plot point of him restoring himself through dyad’s energy is already in film.

A bit radical, but…
…what do you think about removing Palpatine and the fleet of deathstardestroyers (why is this even a thing???) entirely and keep the Wayfinder and the Sith homeworld as merely another shadow of the past, which Kylo seeks to destroy.
Maybe give him !one! deathstardestroyer or a (few) dreadnaught+ to raise the stakes.

I was actually thinking of removing Palpatine completely, and having the Death Star Destroyers be built by Kylo. Here’s my planned plot outline:

-Rewrite the opening crawl to establish that Kylo is using a group of Sith cultists on the planet Exegol to build an unstoppable fleet of Star Destroyers, each with the power to destroy an entire planet. The Resistance has found out about this, and has begun searching for a legendary Sith Wayfinder which could lead to Exegol.

-Begin the movie with Rey’s training. Kylo communes with Vader’s helmet, and Rey and Kylo have a shared vision. Rey talks with Leia about how she’s been having trouble concentrating recently.

-After Rey’s training, cut to the heroes embarking for Pasaana. Most of the opening has been cut, since they already know where the Wayfinder is in this version. Lando’s conversation with the heroes tells us all we need to know.

-The events on Pasaana and Kijimi proceed as normal, with minor trims to remove discussion of Palpatine’s return.

-Cut Rey saying she recognizes Ochi’s ship. Rey’s parents are still nobody drunkards in this version.

-Cut the Force Bond lightsaber duel completely, since most of the conversation revolves around how Rey’s parents weren’t actually nobodies.

-Remove all dialog from Rey and Kylo’s meeting in the hangar, until Kylo takes his mask off. Rey isn’t a Palpatine in this version.

-The events on Endor proceed as normal, with minor trims to remove discussion of Palpatine’s return and Rey Palpatine.

-After the heroes learn about Leia’s death, cut to a Star Destroyer destroying Kijimi. The one-two punch of those scenes being together is really powerful.

-The events on the Resistance base and Luke’s island proceed as normal, with minor trims to remove discussion of Palpatine’s return and Rey Palpatine.

-Restructure the final battle to focus on the Resistance, removing all scenes of Rey between her guiding the Resistance to Exegol and her X-Wing escaping the final battle safely.

-Move Kylo’s redemption to after the victory celebration and before Rey’s return to Tatooine. There are now two final scenes for each member of the Force Dyad, and Kylo’s fate is left ambiguous.

That’s my planned plot structure for a potential edit that removes Palpatine. It might not be possible, but it’s the only way this movie could be salvaged in my opinion.

Then what’s the finale?

“What are looking at me for?” Listen to Starkiller.

EDIT: I haven’t got a clear plan in mind, but I would like to see a finale with the main focus on the fight against the FO and especially the civil fleet. Ideally Ben and Rey should lead them from the falcon. Some sort of a Stormtrooperrebellion or at least a scene of Kylo freeing these enslaved soldiers would be a great addition too.

EDIT2: And most importantly we should never see Exegol or cultist. Our protagonist’s obsession with the past and legacies should literally be the distraction, which keeps them from defeating the FO.
On top of that I would like to imply, that the obsession with the past and their predecessors, namely the Empire or Exegol (just invent another ancient Sith-Empire) should be the thing that keeps the FO running.

FYI for anyone looking to change things about the Rey Palpatine reveal, the two scenes with Kylo - the Force duel and the hangar reveal - are basically just him exclusively talking under a mask and Rey reacting (“No!” “Stop talking” “Why?” stuff like that). I’m pretty confident this was done on purpose because they knew these were crucial expositional scenes and wanted the latitude to change after the fact. But it also means editors should be able to mess with them pretty easily.

Yeah, that’s why I’m planning on cutting all of Kylo’s masked dialogue during the hangar scene. It should be relatively easy to do by using the “Join Me” track on the official soundtrack.

If someone does end up pursuing a fan edit that removed the whole ‘Rey Palpatine’ thing, they’d have a good opportunity to make the final scene free of dialogue, ala the other 8 films.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I don’t think removing Rey Palpatine requires removing Rey Skywalker. I actually think Rey Skywalker would feel better without Rey Palpatine, since it would show that Rey has finally found the family she searched for all these years.

More than that, you can have him say something else if you want.

Yeah, same. Honestly you might have to keep it, as it’s sort of the only scene that explicitly shows her coming to terms with her parentage one way or another.

Also, if you lost it, you’d probably have to change the title as well.

Rey adopting the name Skywalker, along with her being nobody, is something I wanted from very early on in this trilogy, and unlike the latter, which I treated as a given they’d do, I wasn’t sure they’d have her adopt the name Skywalker, but the madlads actually did it and I’m so glad.

What does everyone think about the idea of removing Palpatine completely? I posted some suggestions for it a few comments ago. Is it feasible or not?

Honestly I can’t imagine how that would work. Not that it couldn’t, but I can’t see it myself. So much of the film revolves around him it’d be very hard to do.
