@poppasketti, have you thought about removing the Matrix-style shot of Luke during the dual like Hal does in his V3? Definitely an improvement.

DZ-330, I’ve thought about that a little, and while it’s definitely a seamless edit, I don’t think the slomo shot ever really bothered me. I’ll give it another look, though.

I think 4D is very VERY close! Very nice job Poppasketti. I think the subtly lends itself very well, and like you I think there is room enough for the Rey and Kylo moment before Kylo has his scene alone and full of despair, despite his new found power (classic darkside). I think Kylo really needs this tease, we need to bridge the gap and give Kylo a reason to go on like he has in ROS. As it stands in the original version he has nothing to do at the end of the film, but with this he has found new purpose which he clearly has at the beginning of ROS. Then of course we have the contrast at the very end of the film of Rey and her moment with Leia/friends. NOW ON TO THE DETAILS!

-Personally I think there is too much sound (force connection sound alongside the radio and the music) as of right now, and I think just limiting it too a staticy transmission is enough. If you could make another version of 4B now with the added subtly you could be very close to what I would use for average viewing/showing people.

-I really like what you’ve done with the visuals of the transmission and I think it needs to stay for an even longer prolonged shot then what you have in the 4D, just for cinematic context.

-As for the cloak in the mirror cave…I kinda really like the idea (biased of course, its mine lol). I agree however with how fast it seams to blink on/off and I think I have a solution. In my original vision of the scene the cloak only appears (even at the last second if need be) around the figure before the fog rolls back and Rey’s head is revealed (no cloak just like original). That way it is more confusing for Rey and the audience, cause it looked like the cave was really gonna show her who she comes from, this person in the hood,(rather than a hood, no hood syke)and then just shows her her own face. This is better cause all the figures in this scene represent real people. The two figures=her parents. The one (more important) figure which becomes cloaked=Palps. Then of course, Rey=chosen by the force Rey. This is different then the other hooded version cause as it stands, there seams to be another character after the hooded figure, which there isnt.

-I think the sith whispers are dope 😉

I think that is it for the technical tweaking.

I have absolutely no problem with Palps contacting Kylo through a random radio in an ancient rebel base (which is quite a feat in it of itself) Palpatine has ALWAYS been one to abuse and use technology for his own good (ie. vadersuit, death star, cloning snoke, big mechanical GLaDOS arm) and this is no exception which I appreciate. As for the “I have been every voice inside your head” line also works great alongside the transmission because Palpatine isn’t referencing this contact…He’s talking about Kylo’s grandfather speaking to him through his helmet in TFA.

As for the cave sneaking in a palps tease to Rey, makes perfect sense! The darkside is about using the truth to deceive (seducing Anakin). The truth is that Palpatine is her blood, but the other truth is that she has been chosen by the force to bring balance and doesnt have to belong to anyone. The sneaky cave just draws a line between the two where there doesnt need to be. This hooded figure scene doesn’t really deliver until the very end where Palp comes back and contacts Kylo. Then it clicks that not only is Palps back but he has his hands in both our Antagonist and hero (pulling the strings all along).

Sorry if some of this didnt make any sense. But hey I am very confident you can get to a polished enough version. Thanks for reading through all that crazy.

RL, I get what you’re saying and I can see a version like that working (Option 4E)! I think if I do try that, I would slow down and split up the long dolly, as you said, and end on that shot. I think I should stay away from the closeup eyes shot to avoid a second duplicated shot.

I don’t think it was really the music that was dictating the edits so much as needing to give a new idea it’s own moment, which requires time. So I don’t want to make it much shorter, but rather reduce the number of cuts.

I’ll take a look when I can, but for now, 4D V2 is the “current” version in the cut!

@Poppasketti Do you plan on including a shot of the dark side version of Rey seen in The Rise of Skywalker?

Hello, here’s an Option E! For this version, I’ve returned the twitch shot to original theatrical spot, and reduced the cutting back and forth to the radio, now ending on the long dolly shot.

Axios, thanks for your thoughts. I went a bit more subtle with some of the sound effects for Option E as you suggested, but I kept the force call sound, as I would like to leave it open to interpretation as to where the voice is coming from. Good thoughts on the Dark Side Cave, and I will think about that when I revisit it. Part of me is just not sure I can do the FX in a way that’s convincing enough, but we’ll see!

If you mean for the Mirror Cave scene in TLJ, I am not sure. I don’t think it really fits into that moment, which is about her disappointment in just seeing her reflection. I think she would have had a different reaction if she had seen evil Rey.

I did too. It kind of felt like he was unraveling, wondering if he was losing it.

I do like ending on a shot of Kylo though. Just to throw a monkey wrench into everything, I’ll say my personal favorite was actually the 4D V3! There’s something exciting and terrifying about ending on the closeup of Kylo’s eyes, even if it is a repeated shot. I guess to me his reactions are so understated it just looks like cutting back to the same camera angle, and not the same exact shot.

Well, anyway, I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks. I’m overall happy with any of the D or E options.

Sorry for so much posting!

I updated 4D V3, retiming and recropping the end shot of Kylo’s eyes, hoping it no longer feels like a duplicate and more of just cutting back to the same camera angle.

So the three options I’m considering are:

Palpatine Contact Option 4E

4E felt VERY organic and just worked, I wasn’t sure you needed it but once i saw it play out there was nothing that distracted me or pulled me out of the scene.

It’s very clean, very understated. I like it a lot!

In my opinion it’s now between that and 4D V2 which was my previous fav

I might be leaning toward 4E though?

I can actually do a somewhat good Palpatine impression. Would it be worth it for me to try a recording of “(Kylo Ren), find me” for the radio scene? Especially since we have the radio sound effect it might help mask that it is not actually Ian McDiarmid.

Maybe even this:
“Kylo Ren, find me. I will give you Snoke could not”

why not ben find me? Only Luke, Leia and Han ever called kylo by his first name. Snoke would call ben the son of solo, so it would freak ben out if he heard his name again so it would be ben… find me. That’s why his face was so shocked it would make sense story-wise why kylo wanted to kill Palpatine so much in IX. “Let the past die”

I think I’d rather keep the mystery and subtlety than do anything explicit. I’m happy with broken words and then “Find me.” I appreciate the offer for voice help, though!

I think we have 2-3 good options that are very similar, so I’d like to step away from it for now, and look at it with fresh eyes before making a decision and final tweaks.

So, in that spirit, I’ve made another pass of the Mirror Cave scene, moving the appearance of the hood later as Axios and others have suggested!

Did you still have plans for the showing hints that Palpatine is controlling Snoke when he his sliced in half? Suggestions have been showing Snoke with dark side yellow eyes and a blue essence leaving his body.

POPPASKETTI! THAT MIRROR SCENE IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! I…CANT BELIEVE YOU DID IT SO PERFECTLY. That right there is absolutely what I was thinking of and it looks phenomenal to me!

Also not to confuse you or get you hooked on the Kylo/Palp scene anymore but if you want to know my last opinion… I actually think 4E is the best so far. It is very organic and the lack of cuts lets the audience ponder/process alongside Kylo. Maybe if you limited the amount of cuts for D3 it might feel the same way but so far I feel very good about 4E.

I am so unbelievably impressed with the mirror scene and I am very excited for V3

The Whispers and Hood (V4) looks fantastic! I’m non-plussed in general about retconning anything for TROS but this is really perfect.

I did, and actually I was playing with it today and was very happy with how well the tracking on the eyes came out. I should be able to post something in the next day or two!
