The Last Jedi: Rekindled (Released) — Page 26

Hi Poppa, nice work as always, unfortunately I think these choices are really going to split opinion. 4A is the only one that works for me personally. 4C comes too far out of leftfield, it would be jarring for me even with the prior hints. Also I think the film really needs the last moment between Rey and Ren and I would argue that it is even more important than setting up TROS so that rules 4B out for me also.

To follow up on my comment, I am more certain of removing the laugh. If you need more time for music cueing and such, maybe even repeat the line later. The first one can be super distorted, I mean super distorted … and then the final one is clearer than the first one.

Better yet, as for timing and all … it can be a super muffled “Find Me” … then a less muffled, a little clearer “Find Me” and the final could be a “Find Me” you already have. Or if timing is not a problem, just have the first one and then the final one.

First off, super impressed how fast you are getting these sample edits out…well done.

For me personally, I feel the force connection between Rey and Kylo at the ends needs to stay as it’s a critical setup for TROS and really just a great scene overall and would hate to see it removed. So, I feel 4A is best the option to incorporate in V3.

However, the fact that Palpatine says “I have been the voices in your head” in TROS I kinda like the idea of 4C as well as we are hearing Palpatine voice in Kylo’s mind. Tough choice! I would happy with either 4A or 4C as they both include the Force connection.

All of your potential V3 changes are impressive from a technical perspective! I’m just not sure if they’re all needed.

  1. I didn’t look at what the change was before watching the clip and I struggled to find out what was different. But I think in this case that’s a good thing.

  2. I don’t think this is necessary. It works but maybe it’s too on the nose? Playing off of idir_hh’s idea, I think it would be cool if the silhouettes could be altered so that it starts as one person, splits into two, and then back into one revealing Rey. It would show the significance of grandpa Palps rather than her parents, and would be one of those things that makes more sense after watching TROS. Granted, it might be too hard to achieve fx-wise.

  3. Great!

  4. I’m not sure if this can be pulled off. As other people have mentioned, 4A is the best option but it has repeated shots which are noticeable and Kylo looks in the wrong direction when he goes to look at the computer screen.

Personally I think 1, 2, and 3 would be enough foreshadowing for TROS and as much as I love the work you’ve done for 4, I’m not convinced. Amazing work though, as always!

Thanks everyone for the quick feedback! Keep them coming if you can!

For #2, the Palpatine hood, I’m wondering if it would be best to just have the audio Sith Whispers, and skip the visual Palpatine reference. It would be very difficult to make the shadows start as Palpatine and then split into the two figures we see. I also think it would be confusing for a single hooded figure to emerge after Rey asks to see her parents, which splits into two, and then merges back into one. The way I looked at it with what I have currently is that the hood could be Palpatine himself or Rey in a Palpatine cloak (as she appears in TROS), and the idea is just to tease the imagery. However, if it doesn’t feel right, I would consider abandoning the visual reference entirely.

For #4, I think I may proceed with a hybrid of A and B, with the goal of shortening the message (removing “it is your destiny” and the laugh), making it vague as to whether it actually is the radio, and removing as many duplicate shots as possible. It may a case of having your cake and eating it too, but I’d like to have both the Kylo/Rey moment and the brief radio tease!

Thanks for calling this out, because I didn’t mention this before! I added radios to the other side of the room, which you can see in the early wide shot when Kylo-Ren crouches down. The closeups of the radio are flopped from an earlier scene (“They’ve heard us, but no one’s coming”). I’m not sure if I need to call more attention to it, but I did try to edit it so that Kylo’s sightline makes sense.

I actually did notice the additional radios! Well done. Correct me if I’m wrong, but even with the new radios, shouldn’t Kylo be looking to his right? Currently, he’s looking left. Maybe I’m just being a dingus and am missing something!

Your work is great, keep it up!

Also, I would certainly try with the audio only changes. You bring up good points and also, it made me think would it be better to be far more subtle than trying to hint at things too much? Probably, especially if you are going to have the Palp Radio Dialogue ThingyTM. Just having the whispers doesn’t really “reveal” or overtly hint at anything. Why? This is a Dark side place, we as the audience know that! So having those whispers isn’t really pointing “Hey, we are hinting something, can’t you tell?!”

As for #4, if you can strike a good balance of not using any or most of the reuse of scenes would be great. Especially lessening Palp’s lines would be key too. I am liking your direction.

Hmm. I just looked at these shots over and over, and it took me a long while re-establish the orientation of the room, but I think you’re right. What’s throwing me off is they keep crossing the 180-degree axis. I think I could move the radio monitors to just to his left so that when he looks up, it matches. Thanks!

Gotta admit I didn’t first notice the radios until it was pointed out. LOL. But yeah, since it is re-used footage he looks to his left and the radios are at his right. If there is a way to not recycle so much … this would be a killer thing!

Agreed.

Although it would be less subtle, you could illustrate that by having the hood quickly morph from “Evil Rey” to normal Rey when Palpatines silhouette approaches.

As for radio line, we could have it moveing only slightly, indicating only radio noise and not direct transmission of Palpatine voice while keeping the same audio.

An in this firs cave whispers scene, you could add Palpatines “Rey” from “Oh, I’m AFRAID the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive” when Reys hand is shown touching the ground, just before she says “It’s calling me”.

I hope I’m not too late to give feedback on these options.

  1. This is good.

  2. The hood looks weird the way it appears, then disappears quickly. I still think it would be good to have it be Dark Rey’s face that is revealed when the ice melts away. If you do this, you don’t have to make the hood disappear. This way, you have more of a hint earlier in the trilogy (Which I think is important), without saying yet that she’s a Palpatine. The original scene is frustrating to me, even with sith whispers, because we don’t learn anything about her. (I know it’s because the scene is saying she’s a nobody, but we know now that’s not true.) This would fix that, while still saving the Palpatine reveal for the next film.

  3. This sounds good. Keep it.

4C. This is my favorite. I like how it’s Palpatine using the Force instead of the radio. I like that it keeps the Kylo/Rey exchange, I also love how you save the laugh for when Rey closes the door. I just wish you would reinsert the “It is your destiny” line. It’s a good line, and I believe it makes it the right amount of dialogue. Not too much, not too little.

I love this idea. Do this.

Well, here’s a version I’m calling 4D! It is essentially a hybrid of A and B, but may also satisfy some of C. It has the Rey/Kylo moment, a radio moment that only reuses 1 shot (which is cropped and time remapped), while also leaving open the possibility that Kylo is not sure where the voice is coming from. He looks at the radio, which crackles, but doesn’t really respond to Palpatine. When we finally hear “Find Me” clearly, it could be a force connection. There’s many tweaks here to try and sell this, so I won’t go into all of the detail, but I do feel like this is getting close to where I’d like it to be.

My only sticking point is losing the emotional twitch from Kylo as the door closes. To me it feels like he’s reacting to something much more immediate (and tragic) than the radio broadcast, and now it feels out of place having it later. I know it’s a pain to find shots to use in the right order, but that definitely stood out to me.

I prefer a mixture of 4A and 4C with the radio contact instead of the force voice, as palpatine’s voice from the radio fades away we cut straight to Rey coldly staring down Kylo with Palpy’s voice still lingering in the background.

That’s interesting. There’s a few shots that can be used in different ways. I always liked cutting from the door closing to the Kylo eyes closeup, and felt that the twitching shot (in this new context) felt like he was being disturbed/confused, unsure if he was hearing voices in the radio. He could be questioning his sanity. I also added some low level Sith whispers (good things come in threes!) to reinforce the idea that there’s more going on than the radio. I’m wondering if I should even make them a bit more prominent in the mix.

I think the problem I always had with the versions that interweaved the Palpatine moment (radio or not) with the Rey/Kylo moment is that any audience would be so shocked by the mystery voice that they wouldn’t even be thinking about the character moment. I think we need to resolve where Rey and Kylo-Ren stand at the end of the movie before we introduce a new idea.

I wouldn’t make them too prominent, the whispers since you are already using them in the cave … I personally don’t see the need to make it more obvious since its the line we want.

I like what you did a lot!

4D is really good, probably the best version of Palpatine’s message yet. It’s subtle enough that a hypothetical first time viewer would be left wondering who exactly was talking to Kylo, creating an air of mystery in an otherwise conclusive ending. I’m really looking forward to seeing the latest version of this edit.
