Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 22

I know broom boy is a great scene for concluding Luke’s arc in TLJ, but I think I like it more as a hopeful ending to Star Wars as a whole than Rey Skywalker and the four hundredth binary sunset. Would moving it to TROS work? It’d have to feel like a kind of callback like the victory celebration in ROTJ, or the planets we see in this movie, or all the call-forwards in ROTS, rather than just obviously being out of place. It’d make TLJ feel a little less complete and self-contained, which is bad for that movie, but perhaps good for the trilogy since it’d carry momentum forwards better. It could be worth editing around the explicit mention of Luke Skywalker/the toys obviously laying out the Battle of Crait/the Rebellion ring to make the scene more generally applicable to the legacy of all our heroes.

I had a weird idea and I’m not sure there’s enough footage to pull it off. Since Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is easily the most interesting character of the sequels, and his parts are generally the highest quality, would it be possible to make one movie just from his perspective? I’m imagining it somewhat like A Christmas Carol, with Ben as Scrooge and Han, Luke, and Leia (and Chewie to some extent) following like ghosts and “haunting” him for his evil deeds. Some of this is already explicit in TROS and when Luke says “I’ll always be with you just like your father” in TLJ.
Since the focus would be on Ben, Rey would be the pseudo-antagonist, a star pupil trained by the OT cast to replace him, which builds his resentment until he grows to have some affection for her and Palpatine gets involved.
Obviously deleted scenes like the Oracle would help flesh this out a lot more.

This could really work well. Kylo struggles a lot in the trilogy so it could easily be re-edited from his perspective.

I wonder if it would be possible (or even a good idea) to change the twist into that Rey was a clone made by Palpatine to give his soul a new body. Might be able to be accomplished by adding a few Rey bodies in the tanks with the Snoke bodies.

Keeps the same energy as her being his granddaughter without having the question of who the hell did Palpatine hook up with. Also keeps continuity that her parents were “nobody”.

If the leaks and deleted scenes are true about Adam Driver filming a scene with Daisy on Tattooine, this would suggest originally, Kylo and Rey were supposed to “retire” on Luke’s farm in the final scene.

This may be possible to still do, with Driver digitally inserted. Maybe use heavy shadowing in the Binary Sunset, possibly lighten up his dark outfit, etc.

Rey could look to the side when asked for her name by the farmer, and maybe have Ben smile and nod, giving the ok to call herself a Skywalker now.

Wanted to share some thoughts on adding to the role of the Knights of Ren in the trilogy.

What if you could somehow alter the rainy scene from Rey’s forceback to imply it is the Jedi massacre? Maybe change the guy with the bowl hat’s staff into a lightsaber. And insert the burning temple in the background. Although Kylo had not yet made his red lightsaber or had his Kylo look by that point, it could just explained by vision symbolism. (Or you could cover Kylo with a new character, hooded with face unseen holding Ben’s blue lightsaber. Implying it is Ben that same night.)

This gets into a whole other topic regarding the massacre and the different ways it could have went. I know the Rise of Kylo Ren comic has backstory on the temple massacre and the Knights of Ren, but I’m ignoring that because destroying the temple with a random Force storm feels like such a wasted opportunity.
There’s two ways I like to imagine how it went:

  1. The Knights are Sith cultists who were planning to help Ben Solo destroy the temple the night Luke looked into Ben’s mind. He basically saw what they were planning to do. Maybe Ben was on the fence about going through with it, but waking up to Luke holding up his lightsaber forced him to make a choice.
  2. The Knights are the other students Luke mentioned that left with Ben. Maybe there were already Team Luke and Team Ben camps forming among the Jedi students, and when it looked like Ben had killed Luke, the Jedi began fighting each other and Team Ben came out alive.

While I like both, especially option 2, I think you would have to create new footage to try to get option 2 across, especially since you would have to explain why the Knights no longer use lightsabers. This leads me to think Luke saying that Ben left “with a handful of his students” should be cut from TLJ. Maybe you could give the Knights dialogue to help get either option across in TROS when they show up.

If you implied the Knights just helped Ben attack the Temple that night, maybe you could create a shot where the Knights are looking at the temple from a distance, and it could be placed in a flashback somewhere. You could possibly insert it after that establishing shot of the temple in Luke’s first TLJ flashback, but before it cuts inside the hut. You could take the shot from TROS of the Knights peaking around the rocks looking at Chewbacca, but change the background and regrade it to match that location. You could possibly add a light rain effect to that establishing shot to help connect it with the Force vision, or simply distant thunder of an approaching storm.

This would add a few benefits. One, the Knights of Ren would now appear in all three films (even if it is brief) and gives us an idea of their relevance to the story. Two, if Luke realized there was a predmeditated attack on the temple that night, and Ben was in on that plan, it would make Luke’s anger more understandable. It isn’t just a hypothetical dark future, but a danger right on his doorstep. While Ben perhaps had not made up his mind yet, it appears to Luke that he was in the midst of betraying him.
Three, having another group kill the Jedi, or help Ben kill the Jedi, might help make Ben more sympathetic, that maybe he was pressured into those actions by the Knights of Ren and Snoke, and did not kill the other Jedi alone, or at all.

Apparently in the comics a Force storm destroys the temple and kills most of the Jedi, but I think that is dumb. If Snoke could destroy Luke’s temple and students with a Force storm, why did he need a planet killing device to destroy Luke on Ach-To?

During Luke’s first flashback, he says, “When I came to, the temple was burning. He had vanished with a handful of my students, and slaughtered the rest.”

Maybe the line could be changed to, “He had vanished, and slaughtered the/my students.” I don’t think Luke ever says anything about the Knights of Ren directly.

Maybe you could still imply the Knights of Ren are the other students (maybe one or all of them already secretly work for Snoke), and give them dialogue into TROS to imply that, but some people might find it weird that they’re fallen Jedi, but Kylo is the only one who uses a lightsaber. Maybe Kylo was the only one out of that group who had completed their training and built their own lightsaber, or maybe Luke’s Jedi didn’t all use lightsabers.

If you went with that angle, maybe you could have Luke say, “He had vanished with a handful of my students, and [they] slaughtered the rest.” Again, this just helps make Ben not solely responsible for the death of all the Jedi, as well as provide backstory for the Knights of Ren. The Forceback scene could be interpreted as an event of their past, but with their presents appearances. Basically, the night their new identities were born.

Then again, if they are Luke’s formers students that sided with Ben that night, why doesn’t Ben try to turn them back after he switches sides? Maybe dialogue could be added that shows their minds won’t be changed. Or, they can reveal that they were working for Snoke the whole time.

I’m still not sure. There are a lot of ways you could do it. I’d be interested to hear what you guys might do with them.

I have an idea for an upcoming edit of The Last Jedi. The final paragraph in the opening crawl mentions that Snoke has sent Kylo to obtain a wayfinder that will lead him to “a dark presence” that he must destroy as part of his training mentioned at the end of The Force Awakens.

We open with Kylo raiding Mustafar and obtaining the wayfinder before heading to Exegol, where he meets Darth Sidious and learns that Snoke was his creation (Kylo doesn’t mention that he killed Snoke, since he isn’t dead yet). We don’t get the shot of the Star Destroyers rising from the ground or the part where Sidious orders Kylo to kill Rey. After Sidious tells Kylo that Rey is not who he expects, we immediately cut to the opening Resistance evacuation scene on the ground.

We don’t get the first throne room scene with Kylo and Snoke, since it will be confusing if you have the scene with Kylo and Sidious play in the beginning while having Snoke berate Kylo for his failure to get Rey. Since we don’t get the first throne room scene with Snoke and Kylo, we remove the “Where’s Han?” scene (since it will be jarring if we cut from “Where’s Han?” to Rey explaining to Luke about the current situation) and it is now replaced with the deleted scene of Luke mourning Han before we cut to Leia in hyperspace.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

I feel like this is the best option of everything that’s been proposed so far regarding seeding the Emperor. If we frontload TLJ with that knowledge, then it’s way less of a suprise, it keeps Kylo’s motivations ambiguous, and its shadow will keep TLJ feeling like a tighter part of the sequel trilogy rather than a lot of people’s ‘black sheep’.

I think I can articulate why exactly I’m not a fan of the idea of putting Palpatine in TLJ.

Generally if you are gonna set something up for the next movie in a series, the way you should do that is to set it up in the beginning of the movie, with all the other stuff you’re setting up for the movie itself, and just leave it unresolved in this one. For example, one of the ideas to incorporate Palpatine into TFA/TLJ that I prefer is having Snoke being a sort of middle man and promising Kylo the reward of meeting the “true power” back in TFA, as someone suggested. It would undermine Kylo killing Snoke, but it’s probably the best option if you want to go this route.

I don’t really like the idea going around here that when the Resistance is running through the radio, Palpatine’s broadcast comes through. That completely kills the pacing and distracts the audience from everything going on in the movie itself. At best the audience is going to be worrying about Palpatine’s broadcast, nothing else.

Putting in a post-credits scene of Palpatine’s return could work, but it wouldn’t solve the issue. Had they done it theatrically, this would show to people that it was the plan from the beginning, but a fanedit can’t do that and it wouldn’t story-wise solve the problem of Palpatine kind of coming out of nowhere, since the post-credits scenes on a movie kind of exist in their own story bubble. This is not a scene in Iron Man.

I mean, personally I’d hate to ruin either TFA or TLJ by putting in a TROS scene. Something subtle is better.

Post credit scenes seem terribly in Star Warsy to me, but adding something as simple as Palpatine’s laugh might work. There is precedent as I believe TPM ended with Vader breathing.

Has anyone considered adding Pryde to earlier films?

I feel like as an ending, the film would benefit from having a quiet fade to black then subtle music for the first part of credits, rather than the traditional iris wipe to fanfare. The rest of credits could be the saga’s greatest hits.

Oh and I’d like to move the RotJ SE celebration to here, since it’s the saga’s true ending.

If the full Mustafar deleted scene with Hux and Pryde gets released, and it is put at the beginning of the last jedi, like people have suggested, Pryde would be there. However, while I previously liked the idea to put this scene at the beginning of TLJ, Now I don’t think it’s a good idea, for two reasons.

  1. People will wonder why Pryde is not in the rest of the film.
  2. The scene is supposed to be Kylo searching for the Wayfinder, after he hears Palpatine’s broadcast, so he can find Palatine. I think this purpose should stay intact, rather than seaching for the source to Snoke’s power or that Snoke told him to find it, so he can kill Palpatine. If Palpatine is controlling Snoke, he wouldn’t till Kylo to come kill him.

Yes! I would love to see a fan edit with the music from that video playing over the credits.
I was also thinking about moving the ROTJ celebration to TROS, but unfortunately, you would have to cut out the scene of people pulling Palpatine’s statue down. Maybe that one could just stay in ROTJ.

I didn’t even notice his statue being knocked down. Regardless, it’s vague enough it could be interpreted to be any First Order leader’s statue.

Is their any way we could expand Rose’s role in TRoS? At least give her and Finn another kiss during the celebration?

How about we don’t? I mostly liked TLJ, but I didn’t like how they added Rose just to say that Finn is “totally not gay.” I’d actually prefer if we reduced her role in TLJ, and reduced Zorii’s role in TROS for the same reason.

Idk… Finn and Rose’s relationship in TLJ felt very organic to me. The question is did Finn reciprocate her feelings.

On a different note, what if we included battle droids? It would serve as a nice bookend.

I wish there was a way to make Finn and Poe smooch in the finale aaagh

Also there was a battle droid in Babu’s shop-room-thing

He’s practically unnoticeable, though. I think it would’ve need to have battle droids as part of the hidden fleet instead of the suspiciously modern sith troopers.

Still need some time to think about it but I may have an idea for how we can imply something between them.

The stories of the Sequel Trilogy don’t hold up because they are completely disconnected from the original 6 movies. The attempts to reconnect them by bringing back Palpatine (and making Rey a Palpatine) did not do enough to build an actual connection. They are also generally paced terribly, all three. Rise of Skywalker should have released as the 3 hour version; assuming that happens at some point, here is my proposal for a reworking, that could possibly be done as a fan edit:

Episode 7(no roman numerals because its too hard for normal people, and it signifies a certain departure and non-continuity, and its nature as a sequel to a series of 6 movies): Shadows of the Empire (It is just a good title, forget the book or whatever)

The introduction should be rearranged to flow better, and the comedy (and cringe scenes) should be cut. Acts 2, 3, and 4 out of four should be greatly truncated, time skips are acceptable. The second half of the movie should be devoted to all of Luke on the island, and a greatly truncated half of the Last Jedi, ending before Krait.

Episode 8: The Last Jedi

Begin with Krait, and end 1 hour through the Rise of Skywalker.

Episode 9: The First Skywalker

Finish out RoS, end with a scene showing Rey going back and time to be Shmi Skywalker. Cut from “there was no father” to the part where Kylo Ren is force healing Rey, with his hand on her stomach. It won’t be a good ending, but it will be an ending, and it will tie together the whole saga (not so) nicely (which is better than not at all). Maybe somehow have a real Sky-walking scene or something, this could have been Kathleen Kennedy’s idea for the ending. I dunno, who cares. Who cares is better than “I don’t care.”

Author
Time

Two quick ideas. I’ve thought a lot about ways to alter Finn’s character arc, and while I do have some more ambitious ideas, I may have thought of two ways to change his arc with only some additional dialogue, at the least.

For Rise of Skywalker, what if we could create the implication that Jannah and the other rogue Stormtroopers were inspired by the story of FN-2187 to defect? In retrospect it feels like a missed opportunity for them not to do this. Maybe we could redub Jannah’s character, or find a voice actor that sounds similar to her, to say even one extra line of dialogue that goes along with this idea.

An additional idea for TLJ, what if we took the deleted scene of the Stormtroopers on the elevator, and redub the one that recognizes Finn to create an entirely new context. What if the stormtrooper(s) recognized Finn, but they let him go?

So in the second film you would have troopers who have heard of Finn’s defiance (maybe they especially like the fact he left Phasma in a trash compactor), and they defy the First Order indirectly.

And then in the third film, we actually see that Finn’s story inspired other stormtroopers to actually defect.

So although we don’t get to see Finn incite a Stormtrooper rebellion like we might’ve been hoping, we see how Finn’s actions have inspired others to defy authoritarianism. Which already plays well with Rose hearing his story in TLJ, and it parallels the themes with Luke and how his status as a legend inspires hope in others.

Change Finn’s line during the quicksand scene from Rey… to Poe…

Edit:
Your idea about Finn’s influence on other Stormtroopers sounds great.

RogueLeader, YES. There’s been a lot of chat about other elements of the sequel trilogy but TROS absolutely drops Finn’s plot off a cliff, and it needs something like this to make it relevant throughout the full trilogy. Overdubbing the stormtroopers is a great idea, and a solution for TROS also needs to be found. I wish there were some way we could have elements of the First Order fleet turn against the Final Order fleet, but that’s likely beyond our scope.
