Agree with what NeverarGreat said about C3P0 having a silent moment. All three of these films suffer from the characters trying to explain what’s going on.

Totally agree. Any moments of silence that can be contrived would be good for this movie.

I also don’t see a real reason to remove the destroyers rising from the ice.

Maybe one of us could record something to add to the FO boardroom meeting to suggest what Palpatine wants in return is manpower for his fleet. I really like the idea; it makes it feel like his plan did have a valid place for the First Order. Perhaps the fleet is a remnant of Imperial power. Because if it was built by Sith people why does it look like that?

My stance on revising fan edits.

Before the movie came out I assumed the Sith fleet was just stockpiled ships from the old Empire. Someone pointed out the bridges match the ISD-1s, which we never saw after A New Hope. Basically it seemed they were phased out for the ISD-2s that we see in ESB and ROTJ. So my thought was Palpatine sent them all there before the Empire fell as a contingency, and the Sith cult modified them with the laser canon.

Apparently the Visual Dictionary says they’re a brand new class, but I feel like it makes so much more sense if they were just modified ISDs.

And if you stuck with that idea, then basically all the First Order needed to do was boost their numbers to man this new/old fleet.

What I would really love to see with this is some more prominent music placements that the trailer promised. Dual of Fates when Rey and Kylo fight on the Death Star, and maybe Across the Stars at the kiss? Just some extra nods to really make this feel like a 9 film conclusion

I second this. Loved Dual of Fates when it played during the trailers. But I wouldn’t want the original song simply carried over. I would like a remixed version that adds Kylo & Rey’s themes into it. Or just remixed in a way that fits the sequel trilogy music. I think it would take me out of the movie if it’s just the original Dual of Fates. Want that reserved for Phantom Menace.

And as another poster said, there were loud guffaws throughout the theater I was in when they kissed.

And as another poster (me) said, in my theater everyone cheered. In my post I also said I watched a video review and the reviewer’s audience has the same experience as my theater. So it’s a mixed reaction. In this case we should focus on what’s best for the movie. What makes most sense story-wise and creates a more fluid visual experience. I agree that the edit of no kiss was well done and it made the scene look more natural. However, that’s not to say there isn’t a way to edit it to look natural with the kiss too. So I think the argument comes down to is that kiss important or not?

Ultimately for me personally, my two main wishes for this fan edit are:

  1. More breathing room throughout the movie so not every scene feels rushed. I really enjoyed this movie but the main criticism I have is how the dramatic scenes felt rushed and some felt poorly executed (Rey Palpatine reveal & Ben dying for example). Better pacing will enhance my enjoyment of this movie for sure.

  2. Have more tie in with TFA & TLJ. Make the 3 movies feel more connected like there’s a vision/plan all along. As much as I enjoyed all 3 of these movies, I cannot help but to agree with the criticisms that the three movies have connective issues. But to fully achieve that, I imagine some editing will need to be done on TFA & TLJ.

I think you basically agree and are trying to fix these issues. So really all I gotta do now is just to sit tight & wait patiently. Good luck with the project man.

Are you interested in branching in different story directions for the characters, or would rather keep as to what happens in the story. An example would be Ben’s death, and having him live in your edit (even though it would be almost impossible unless an alternate ending was shot and released to the public). I know you had Padmé survive your edit of Episode III, but that did make sense to tie more fittingly with Leia’s description of her in Return of the Jedi. Plus, those were prequels to the Original Trilogy, and these are sequels.

  • If there’s any other good way to link the massive civilian fleet with Luke’s ‘spark of hope,’ I’d do it.

There have been attempts to incorporate Palpatine’s message into this film or TLJ…IF that is successful, it may be thematically appropriate for Luke to do something similar at the very end.

For example, say that Ep 9 climaxes with Palpatine defeating the resistance fleet and then he sends out a message over the radio waves. “Witness the end of the resistance…” and then cut to a scene of the First Order ships starting to head towards planets…who then all react to Palpatine’s message continuing. “…there is no hope. There is no more struggle. There is only…the Final Order.”

Cut to reaction shots, sort of the opposite of ROTJ’s celebrations, except everyone is panicking as Palpatine laughs and continues…but then his signal is cut off. What’s happening? People all turn to their screens, confused. The familiar voice of Luke Skywalker emerges. “No…there is always hope.”

Cut to Rey hearing this as well and getting up. Palpatine pauses his message to deal with this…the resistance fleet all hears it as well, and then they turn to the sky to see Lando and the entire army. Lando: “They heard you, Luke, they all heard you.”

If we’re sharing pie-in-the-sky ideas, I have one for the end of the film:

Palpatine drains the life essence from Rey and attacks the fleet with lightning. Rey’s consciousness rises through the sky and into the stars, and suddenly she is in a void. She hears the voice of Anakin calling to her, and the image of Tatooine - the slave quarters of Anakin’s youth. The scene shifts, to Naboo, to the Jedi temple on Coruscant, to the island, and at each location a new Jedi speaks. Finally she is back at Tatooine by the homestead. She sees the ghosts of all the Jedi appearing around her, and then comes back to the present. She defeats Palpatine, saying ‘I am all the Jedi’. She falls into unconsciousness again, and the homestead resolves around her one final time. She buries the sabers of Luke and Leia in the sand, signifying an end to the violence of the past. Ben cradles the deceased Rey back on Exegol and revives her. On Tatooine, Rey sees one final ghost join the throng - Ben. The scene disappears and she is back in the world of the living.

The film ends with the reunion at the Resistance base.

Or maybe, if we must end the film on Tatooine, at least have the Force Ghosts on Tatooine in the Palpatine confrontation and then have her visit the homestead and bury the sabers after she has some personal connection to this place. In either case, Rey should respond to the old woman with ‘just Rey’.

Almost anything in that direction would be preferable to what was there, but yeah… pie in the sky it would seem.

Since Kylo was considerate enough to be wearing his mask, I wonder if his line “I never lied to you” could be replaced with something like “You were right.” It would be more consistent with the idea that he had previously only looked into Rey’s mind, and got her to admit what she already knew deep down. (And Rey saw his intentions about her and Snoke.) Stating he never lied would seem to imply he knew before.

That’s a good idea! Do we know if he ever says something similar to that?

It’s a line that definitely needs to be cut, regardless of parentage. Clearly it was a line made only for the audience’s benefit, based around a misconception of how TLJ played out. It was Rey who said her parents we’re no one, Kylo provided information that was a “lie” (sold for drinking money). Clearly just the writers being like “oh you think he might be lying? We’ll do you one better, he’s not lying and there’s more to the story” without actually paying attention to what happened. It’s one of the many things that make me wonder if they even saw TLJ. I long for the days of Rian Johnson, who I think outright stated he “forensically analyzed” certain scenes to make sure he wasn’t contradicting anything with his parentage reveal.

When RJ subverted TFA, he did so after having given it a very close reading. There is a great deal of detail carried over throughout. I do not get the same sense about this one.

I might play with using the final bit of music from ROTS to lead into the credits. It’s the regular ol’ Binary Sunset cue and, while it would still be an exact repeat of another movie, it at least wouldn’t be an obvious redo of TFA’s unique final few bars.

Pretty much. TROS has a similar basic mentality (surprises!) but without any of the same kind of care to make them work and not have them undermine what came before.

Kylo’s line ‘They’re dead in a pauper’s grave on Jakku’ makes me think that nobody making TLJ or TROS bothered to rewatch Rey’s vision from TFA.

At least with that one it’s vague enough you can come up with any number of explanations.

God damn, was what I just read about supposed behind-the-scenes studio meddling infuriating.

I hope, however unlikely, that an extended cut is presented. Or that those with the power to do so give us as much deleted material as possible. Sounds like a great deal of it was pretty much finished.

We Star Wars fans seem to be made to suffer. It’s our lot in life.

I’m really scared that, if the reworks were as extensive as we fear, we’ll get a repeat of the Rogue One home release when it comes to deleted footage.
