For this reveal to play out in TLJ naturally I think there has to be a build up, sprinkling strong hints throughout the film of a Snoke/Palpatine and Rey/Palpatine connection would go along way, this can be done by adding the blue smoke from ROTJ as Snoke gets cut in half, also hinting at Rey’s sinister ancestry in the cave scene could be done by playing the Sith whispers from TPM as a hooded silhouette stares back at her in the mirror.

I agree, it would be great to have other clues scattered around TLJ for Palpatines return in IX.

Yes, I also agree. I think there needs to be two, maybe three clues elsewhere. One has already been done by Hal and TiMartyn with adding the Palpatine laugh during the last Luke/Kylo flashback.

Adding With whispers or hooded imagery in the cave also sounds like it’s worth pursuing (though I may lean towards audio-only here). I’ll just need to acquire the Sith sounds.

Though There’s a frame or two of him starting to look down at about 1:00 right before the last shot of the radio.

Fixed, thank you!

Also, DZ-330, I made another try at swapping the shots, same link as above. I cut to the closeup of his eyes on the word “Destiny” which feels better and more purposeful than what I did before. Also, the same link as above (so two options currently; with and without swapped shots).

What do you think about the idea of a spiritual essence leaving Snoke’s body after it’s cut in half?

V2 UPDATE: I am posting a slight update to V2 to fix the high volume of the Finn/Rose shuttle deleted scene on surround systems. The new filename ends in “123119” (same links). Thank you to InitAbsolute for pointing out the issue, and helping QC the adjustment! The new levels are only a few DBs lower, so it’s a small change. If you just want the audio files to remux yourselves, the DTS and AC3 files have been added to the audio folder.

There will likely be a V3, but I wanted to get this fixed here and now, as V3 will likely be the Palpatine-adjusted version that we’re playing with now. I’m thinking some people might simply want the V2, so I wanted to make sure that was in the best shape possible.

Hey just finished watching Episodes 1 through to 8 (with Rogue One and The Mandalorian stuffed in there) and would be really interested in seeing how this differs. Could you PM a link over?

I like this version a lot more. Don’t know why but it just feels more natural. The eyes at the end just make the last shot of Kylo in the movie too rushed the more I think if it.

Could I get a PM, please? Excited to see how this pairs with Episode IX!

Where is this dialog from? If it’s from the previous films I would recommend using the dialog from FortNit by the Emperor. It’s spoken by Ian McDermit and it’s referring to the message of Revenge sent out to the whole Galaxy before TROS.

The problem with using that is it hurts the timeline of the films and will hurt the opening of ROS. A year is supposed to pass between films. The Emperor’s goal at this point of the story would be for Kylo to seek him out. Only Kylo is only supposed to get a hint of what is out there.

The Fortnite message would play a lot better in ROS. The common idea around here seems to be the removal of Palpatine from the crawl of IX and have his return happen in movie. We would actualy hear the broadcast at the beginning of the movie when the Star Destroyers raise up from the ice.

Also, even ROS copies direct Palpatine dialog from the prequels so reusing lines is something even the original filmmakers are doing. 😃

What DZ said, plus I don’t think we have clean audio of the Fortnite “broadcast” anyway, right?

Two thoughts/ideas.

Would there be any way to implement the Wayfinder and/or Exegol in the Last Jedi? Maybe Snoke knows exactly where it is but won’t tell Kylo until he worthy of the dark side.

Is there anyway to edit the Phasma and Finn deleted scene (other than cleaning it up) to make it look as if he force pushes her, not knowing that he could do that, instead of shooting her? It would give some connective tissue to his arc. I always felt like he was force sensitive in TFA and very obvious that he in ROS.

Ash, that’s correct to my knowledge. I haven’t heard a clean recording, though with some audio effects (like the EQ and distortion filters that make it sound like radio) the music in the fortnite clip can be greatly minimized.

Tammer5, I feel like TLJ would be way too early to get into the wayfinder/exegol stuff. It’s too specific and would be distracting from the story. The only thing I think we really needed, given the direction of TROS, is some tease of Palpatine. Frankly, the teaser trailer did exactly that, but we needed something in movie, and I think many of us agree that the opening crawl was not the place to do it (and certainly not Fortnite).

I’ll be curious to see edits of TROS that change the crawl and save the Palpatine reveal for when Kylo Ren finds him, but I think some teasing in TLJ helps the trilogy’s coherence and provides momentum and anticipation for the final chapter.

For Finn and Phasma, I don’t think those deleted scene shots are usable at all (off the top of my head, I haven’t watched that scene in a while). In any case, Finn and Phasma don’t have any showdown in this edit.

Sounds good, the swapped shot version is the leading idea right now for me!

I think teasing Palpatine in TLJ like this, then ending the crawl for TROS with something like “Supreme Leader Kylo Ren searches the Unknown Regions of the galaxy for the mysterious dark power behind Snoke, his former master” with no mention of Palpatine until Ren finds him on Exegol.

Love it!

I never been more excited for deleted scenes in my whole life.

I feel like there is gonna be a lot of “feel in the gap” scenes from ROS.

The one thing I am really hoping for, is a extended Mustafar deleted scene. One with dialog not just action.

Another Palpatine hint could be adding one in towards the beginning of the movie when Rey is training with Luke, the “you went straight to the dark scene” a subtle quiet laugh could be added before Luke screams “Rey!”

Hey there! After everything I’ve read about your edit I’ve got to see it! Seems to be pretty much on point! Do you mind sending me a PM?

Hmm. I’ve been thinking a lot about how to integrate Palpatine into the story as well, and have thought about doing these changes thus far:

  • In the Force Awakens, during the Lightsaber-Touch flashback with Rey, add The Emperor’s laugh as Kylo looks at Rey during the rain (this would be symbolic for both their destinies, and Palpatine overseeing it).
  • In The Force Awakens, as Kylo says to Ray “You need a teacher”, add a subtle hint of The Emperor’s Theme.

TLJ:

This is obviously where we truly start to involve Palpatine.

  • During Rey’s Cave explorations, cut when Rey’s shadowy figure is JUST about to reveal itself. Then cut to the Kylo and Rey conversation. Perhaps add a VERY subtle Emperor’s theme underneath the audio.

  • When Kylo tells Rey in the elevator “I saw who your parents were”, add The Emperor’s Theme (this would be for the ones who want Rey Palpatine to stay canon. I, for my edits, don’t think I want this).

  • After the lightsaber battle against the guards, have music build up to another flashback upon the line from Kylo “You know the truth. Say it!” upon which we complete the Rey figure from the cave, upon which we reveal PALPATINE’s destroyed face on her body for a brief second. Have the scene end abrupt, and have Rey crying, with Kylo continuing the conversation with “Join me”.

This would achieve:

  • Her identity somewhat being confirmed or heavily alluded to.

  • Kylo seeing her for what she is (The Emperor’s daughter), which objectifies her for him (beyond his current emotional attraction to her) as a dangerous ally. This way, the “Join me” is literally his way of saying “I like you, and this is your destiny”).

  • Have the last Palpatine interferance be as Kylo rebuilds his helmet after the Falcon leaves for hyperspace, upon which we hear Palpatine taunting him (“Seek me out”) in the background from either a known or an unknown source.

I think the ideas in this thread are brilliant, but I really don’t think the audio broadcast at the end of TLJ works. It’s too cartoony and forced to have Palpatine speak through a random radio at the very climax of two important characters interactions.

I disagree, the way I interpret it is Palpatine has sensed Luke has died and decided to come out of hiding. He would be keeping track of Kylo through the force and is able to communicate to him through the radio. Also, considering all the other “cartoony” moments we get in the ST movies I think most ppl watching this scene would find it acceptable as a subtle way of teasing Palpatines return.

I like the rule of threes for things like this tease concept. So if we’re adding a laugh in the flashback scene, and radio moment at the end, the sith whispers and/or hooded figure in the cave feels like a good third place. I think the “you went straight to the dark side” scene is already a tease without the addition of any Palpatine-specific references. And I would hesitate to use the laugh again, as it feels like that would be one too many times!

Anjohar, I think those are good suggestions, and we’ll see how it feels when I get through these other thoughts first. I see what you mean about the radio moment, which is why I may try to keep V2 around for those that want it. Personally, I like the way it feels, and I really think something more explicit at the end is so helpful to build momentum for IX.

One more nitpick on the radio scene. Are you able to extend the last shot of the radio slightly longer to finish out the music? It gives the audience a little longer to figure out what is going on and the music helps to play into the mystery. By the time we hear the Falcon it will be quiet and a little more somber.
